Both Fandango and MovieTickets are reporting huge advance online sales for Universal‘s Les Misérables. Fandango says it’s the #1 advance ticket-seller among all Christmas Day releases, surpassing previous record-holder Sherlock Holmes (2009) as well as the #1 advance ticket-seller among movie musicals, surpassing previous record-holder Dreamgirls (2006). MovieTickets compiled a week-long survey and found that 52% of 4,358 poll participants said they were most excited to see the film adaptation of the global stage musical over the next three weekends. The Weinstein Company/Sony’s Django Unchained from Quentin Tarantino scored 24%, Paramount’s Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise placed 16.5%, and Paramount’s The Guilt Trip with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen made 7.5%. MovieTickets also asked how many movies its buyers planned on seeing over the holiday season, with 49% of the 5,132 respondents saying 1-2 films over the next three weekends, 26.6% saying 3-4 films, 17.3% saying more than 5 films, and 7.1% saying no films.

I really hope this will do well.
Really excited to see this, good news to hear!
And it’s awful. Wow so many are going to be SO disappointed.
I seriously doubt it’s awful. I imagine you’re confusing yourself with the film.
No, no, it’s awful.
Based on David Edelstein’s review, I get the sense a lot of people will be won over in spite of the “awful” aspects: “The tasteless bombardment that is Les Misérables would, under most circumstances, send audiences screaming from the theater, but the film is going to be a monster hit and award winner, and not entirely unjustly.”
It really is awful. Couldn’t sit though it all. Ugh.
I know, right. Dreadful. Painful. It’s like a nightmare. (Google the review “I dreamed a nightmare” for some reason it keeps getting erased from here).
And Crowe cannot sing, he’s laughable. Cringeworthy. He should be embarrassed.
I saw an advanced screening. It was great. Cohen, Jackman, etc. gave great performances. Russell Crowe didn’t have the greatest voice in the world, but he worked and was a great fit for the role.
It was basically the play with great visuals.
…and where/when did you see it?
No, it’s sublime. I know there are two camps on this one. I’m in the loved it camp.
Could that translate into a 100M+ 6-day opening (Tuesday-Sunday) ? That would be beyond amazing for a relatively cheap (61M) tentpole that probably wasn’t even supposed to become one.
$100 million may be a bit too much to expect. Films during Christmas time rarely have massive consecutive single days; it is much more spread out through the weeks. If The Hobbit just barely gets to $100 million in 5 days, I don’t see how Les Miserables will get the $100 million in 6 days. A $50-$60 million 5-6 day opening is more likely where I see this film going. Condsidering the film has a $60 million budget as well as the international appeal of Jackman and Crowe, the film will easily bring in some solid money for Universal.
A 2.5 hrs musical about romanticized french history, that was quite a risky project, I hope universal gets handsomely rewarded for it. we need more ambition and risk-taking from the studios, instead of the usual sequels and comic books franchises.
Oh yeah, this was a huge risk – It’s a known property!!! It’s as stage musical, and been made into several films over the years.
Just wait until people start seeing it. I really doubt people are gonna love 10 mins straight of a singing head.
You should see it first before calling it ambitious and risk-taking.
You should also let others see it before you dump your opinion on everyone else. If you did not like it, that’s fine. Let everyone else make up their minds. People know what musicals are; they expect singing throughout.
You’re not listening though… it’s an f’ing singing head for 10 minutes, multiple times. I truly wished more than one character took the leap to end the misery!
I am listening to you but you are not listening to me…you’ve obviously had the chance to see the film earlier than the vast majority of us…we are excited to see the film for a number of reasons so until the film is officially released, we won’t be able to comment on the film or specific scenes you keep mentioning. Could the scenes suck? Yes anything is possible. Could they be amazing sequences shot beautifully to others? Yes. So let the film be released first before you knock someones comments down.
No – I’d say a long musical with a highly moral storyline and a French title in which the only word many Americans can identify is ‘miserable’, is a massive risk when created on this scale. I, too, hope they are richly rewarded.
Saw this at a screening in L.A. last week…really an amazing, emotional film. I have no doubt that it will do well at the box office too. We haven’t had a musical like this in movie theaters for quite some time… Great cast and amazing sets/costumes. I would be surprised if it did not take Oscars in both categories.
i.agree with Christophe that the people involved are recognized and achieve their desired results because of the creative chances they took
Most theaters were sold out here in Korea yesterday and sales are huge for Christmas day. This movie id going to make money for sure.
I’m so excited for Les Miserables, I can’t wait to see it.
No interest in Les Mis in the slightest. Could barely sit through the featurette Regal was running on it this fall.
All the feedback I have heard from people who have seen it has been great. Bought my ticket already for Christmas morning and cannot wait. Maybe it is just too sophisticated for some; in an age of ‘dumping down’ audiences with films and television it is refreshing to have substance and entertainment together.
Watched this at a SAG screening and the audience LOVED every bit of this film. Numerous break outs of applause after numbers and also big applause at the end. Actors can appreciate what went into making this film and how well they pulled it off. Those posting above about how terrible it is clearly have some agenda. Since most people who have seen it are press and Academy members then I think we can safely assume there is some competing films trying to sway voters at the moment with those transparent posts full of such hatred. I was moved by the film and appreciate how they did it and so did everyone in my theater. The fact that it is the highest advanced selling film of all time for Christmas Day is not surprising. It will be a monster hit. Deservedly so.
SAG screenings also loved “Nine.” They’re not hard to please. This film has been getting mixed responses all across the board, so I’m curious to see where it goes after its first couple of days box office wise. It definitely has its legion of fans, but so did The Phantom of the Opera.
Nine did not receive great applause during the SAG screenings. Now, DreamGirls did have great response from the guilds.
AFI just named Les Miserables as one of the best films of the year. Somebody must like it.
OKAY……I promice you wont care about anyone in this film. Hugh Jackman, Eddie redmayne, amanda seyfreid are the best(they can sing and were all round the best by far). Anne Hathaways misery is over the top and unsympathetic, reminds me of lisa monelli with her overemoting(Entertainment weekly noticed that too). Also, she lost 25 pounds? Bullshit, if she lost 25 pounds from her catwoman role shed be dead. And she looks basically the same in both so I dont get where it went. Hugh Jackman on the other hand lost a lot and gained it back for the later parts giving him a great arc(respect). Russels acting is good but, they made him sing way to high for his register and it sounds stupid. Hes clearly a barritone. Sasha baron cohen and Helena Bonham Carter were funny at times but the characters became annoying not fully translating from stage to screen. Not their(Helena, Sascha) fault though, they served the material provided like pros. Except sashas occasional in and out with borat voice and cockney while singing(but it didnt really distract me that much). Tom Hooper, did a descent job recreating the theatre feel, but was a wrong choice for this(Suggestions, Baz Luhrmann, Tim burton if supervised haha, Or maybe even joe wright). The fact that this is getting pushed so hard is hilarious. Noone involved in this film deserves an oscar, except maybe the advertisers.
