A Tom Cruise retrospective might seem atypical of the often rarefied fare at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which considers itself “a pioneer among film institutions and one of the film world’s most respected and influential arbiters of cinematic trends and discoveries”. But on December 17th — sandwiched between the closing night of Spanish Cinema Now and a series of retro favorites including 2001: A Space Odyssey, It’s A Mad, Mad Mad, Mad World and The Sound Of Music — FSLC has scheduled An Evening With Tom Cruise. In the flesh, with New York Film Festival director of programming Kent Jones moderating. A screening of Cruise’s latest movie Jack Reacher directed by Christopher McQuarrie follows as an introduction to the December 18-20 retrospective All The Right Moves: The Films Of Tom Cruise.
It’s a pre-couch-jumping Tom Cruise’s greatest hits — Top Gun (directed by the late Tony Scott), Born On The Fourth Of July (Oliver Stone), Jerry Maguire (Cameron Crowe), The Last Samurai (Edward Zwick), Mission: Impossible (Brian De Palma), Rain Man (Barry Levinson), and Risky Business (Paul Brickman). With those directors Cruise was certainly in good company, so maybe the retrospective programmed by Scott Foundas isn’t so atypical after all. And the Chistopher McQuarrie-directed Jack Reacher, adapted from Lee Childs’ novel One Shot, happens to open the next day.

I have seen zero marketing for this film. Nobody knows about it, did they not learn with John Carter not to name movies the name of the main character.
So what if Cruise jumped on a couch — I think he makes terrific movies. Good for the Film Society of Lincoln Center!
I don’t think he “makes” the movies, Jan. He just stars in them. I’ve never seen a director credit.
I’ve looked up to Cruise ever since I was a kid.
He makes kick ass movies and is a great actor and if I was a rich person I would be first in line for this!
All are good except for The Last Samurai – WTF Foundas??? That movie sucked dianetics. I mean serious – a white guy is the last samurai. Yeah right. What about Magnolia? Or Minority Report? I mean Hello, McFly. Where’s the Spielberg love here? Or Eyes Wide Shut? Nothing with Tommy Boy going for his Oscar (Ok well BORN and RAIN MAN I guess).
Seriously though, if you’re going to do The Last Samurai, why not do just all sucky Tommy movies that made money like Cocktail, Days of Thunder, Far and Away. I mean, how could you possibly leave out Legend in a Cruisey retrospective.
I am shocked that the Film Society would do this, especially around the promotion of this crappy looking movie. Austin, this movie is being marketed but just not well. Strange decision to treat this like an Academy or specialty film. makes one wonder if this event was created as a reason for Tommy to be in NYC (hmmm) or just that the Film Society has become a bunch of starf*ckers. Either way it’s not going to help this lame ass movie.
There are Billboards everywhere for this film – JACK REACHER (2012). Tons of people are aware of it.
Like Jerry Maguire, you mean?
A brilliant, intense, incredibly sensitive (and underrated, frankly, as an artist) man, who is never sated, creatively, unless he is challenging himself beyond his previous character, linguistic, anguish, emotion, literary, period, intellectual….or subtlety selfimposition: Tom Cruise, artistic quandary. Quandary because he loves this way, too. Smile. Perhaps not a quandary, then: simply a joyous quest. Would that he always sees his life, and his art, in this way. xo.
yes USC there are tons of billboards everywhere here in LA but no one wants to see the movie.
I can’t wait to see Jack Reacher. If I were in New York, I’d buy tickets and go. I’ve seen most of Cruise’s movies. His performance is always outstanding….but sometimes the rest of the movie isn’t that good…such as Rock of Ages…I wish him all the best. He has had a tough year. He seems to really care about his fans…and always has
