As it transitions from a single- to a multi-camera format, NBC‘s sophomore comedy Up All Night is also switching showrunners. Former Nurse Jackie co-creator/co-showrunner Linda Wallem has joined the family comedy as executive producer/showrunner. The gig is part of a two-year overall deal she has signed with Up All Night producer Universal Television. Wallem replaces Tucker Cawley, who took over showrunner duties at the beginning of Season 2 after serving as co-executive producer the first season.
NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has a long-standing relationship with Wallem. He brought in Wallem and Liz Brixius to Nurse Jackie while he was at Showtime. The two ran the dark comedy for the first four seasons until departing last spring. Both are now back in business with Greenblatt — Brixius is also under an overall deal at Universal TV. When NBC brass were deciding to re-conceive Up All Night as a multi-camera comedy earlier this fall, they met with Wallem who turned out to be a big fan of the comedy’s stars Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph and was very happy to join the show. Ironically, Cawley has a more extensive background in multi-camera family comedies, having served as an executive producer on CBS’ Everybody Loves Raymond for its entire nine-season run. Under his overall deal with Uni TV, he will now work as a consulting producer on the studio’s single-camera Fox comedy The Mindy Project and will develop new projects for the studio. Wallem is repped by CAA.

So much turmoil for a dead comedy…
Good move. Having worked under Tucker as a showrunner, it was not a good fit. He’s a fantastic staff writer, and incredible in the room. But not a boss. With both he and the also great writer but unequipped showrunner, E Spivey running the show, it was a recipe for disaster. Linda is awesome.
oops, unequipped
Not sure how anyone could say whether E Spivey was equipped to run it or not since she was never given the opportunity. It might be in a different place otherwise.
She did not nor does not want the opportunity.
Linda is a great person and very talented showrunner. I am looking forward to seeing where she takes the show.
Love her, can’t wait!
Emily should be the Showrunner. Why are people under the impression this is rocket science. You just need to be great and decent with people and a great writer. Wallem has neither of those attributes.
Happy they made the switch to a multi-cam. Had NBC and the creatives behind the show not been so stuck on making it a single-cam in the first place, maybe they could of avoided a unhappy cast and minimal viewers. The multi-cam switch will liven up the show and give it a much needed shot in the arm. The series as a single-cam felt dull and was just another one of NBC’s low rated Thursday night comedies. But with an impeccable cast that includes Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph, everything possible should be done to help save the show! This move should give it a good shot at returning for a third season.
You can’t polish a turd. Good luck to Linda. Hopefully, whoever hires her next won’t hold her accountable for this must miss TV.
Yeah, adding extra cameras will fix everything.
This is like spending a month deciding how to dress a corpse.
The second season hAs been crappy. Cheap sets and a laugh track should only make things worse. Still, I wish nothing but the best for Applegate, Rudolph, Jones and Arnett.
Hooray for Linda! Nurse Jackie is deliciously subversive. Cawley is more of a politician than a writer. Most network showrunners are. That’s why everything sucks.
Cawley has a writing Emmy and is one of the best writers in town.
This is a classic example of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
I’m a big fan of Linda Wallem’s and can’t wait to see her take on it.
