EXCLUSIVE: In a late buy, NBC has put in development The Fosters, a comedy co-written by and starring Gary Anthony Williams (Weeds) and executive produced by one of the network’s top personalities, Today co-host/producer Al Roker. The project, which Williams will co-write with Sindy McKay based on an idea by Williams, McKay, Larry Swerdlove and Scott Ward, would have him starring as a father with numerous foster children. Roker, who became involved with the project because of his personal experience with foster kids, will executive produce with his executive at Al Roker Entertainment Tracie Brennan; McKay, Swerdlove, and Ward will co-executive produce. The comedy should not be confused with the ABC Family hourlong pilot The Fosters, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, about a lesbian couple raising biological and foster kids.
This marks Wiiliams’ return to NBC, where he co-starred in Greg Daniels’ comedy pilot Friday Night Dinner last season. Williams, who has also recently sold projects to Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, recurs on Fox’s Raising Hope and TV Land’s Soul Man. He will next be seen in Shawn Levy’s The Internship. Williams is with ROAR, Buchwald/Fortitude and attorney Lev Ginsburg; Roker is with WME.

Gary is as nice as he is talented. Congrats!
Gary is AWESOMELY funny and this sounds like a fantastic project. Looking forward to it and thrilled for him. He’s a gem!
Gary is a comedic genius – funnier than 99% of people on TV, right now. He is the black Kevin James!
A comparison to Kevin James is an insult to Gary’s talent.
In a late buy = Roker option about to expire.
Not a chance NBC puts this on.
Roker has 2 more years on his deal.
Roker works 5 days per week (out of NYC) with hours that start before dawn.
He’s been given two shows to “produce.”
He’s a weatherman.
How exactly is this to be taken seriously?
WOO HOO! Go Scott! God is good!
I agree – feels like a “favor” late buy. Regardless if R has 2 more years on his deal left (my first thoughts as well Anonymous). With respect to Roker’s deal the buys from his company have always felt as such.
I like Williams. He was always pretty funny on Malcolm in the Middle. Cool to see a lesser known actor get a potential gig.
Scott Ward has deserved this for years. So glad to see his great sense of humor and talent manifested this way.
G A WIlliams is the man!!! extremely talented and a well deserved gig for one of the nicest dudes around!
Congratulations to my friend Scott. Awesomely happy for you!
GAW for the win!
Here is hoping it goes all the way!
They might have to change the name ! There us a fosters on abc family !! Staring Teri polo .
Mazel Tov, Mr. Williams! But we still miss you at shul.
Congrats to Mr. Williams! He went to my high school and i worked with him in the late 80′s. He is so funny, so genuine, and so deserving of the success he has acheived! Couldn’t have happened to a better person!
Anyone who has ever been lucky enough to see Gary perform live knows that he is probably the funniest person on the universe! Keep it coming, Gary!!!! We all love you!!!
This sounds like an amazing project fueled by amazing talent. I may have to get the satellite that’s attached to our warehouse turned on.
Gary is one of the funniest people I know. It was only a matter of time before he got his own show.
Way to go Gary! We love you!
Scott Ward be da man!
How did Al Roker find such a great project?
Producer Greg Sheridan was instrumental in helping to assemble this team.
Holla at ya boy Scott Ward!
