The District of Columbia police have launched an investigation into NBC News journalist David Gregory’s use of what he described as a high-capacity ammunition magazine on last week’s Meet the Press. Gregory held up the magazine as a prop during an interview with National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre in the wake of the Sandy Hook school killings by a gunman who used such a magazine. DC gun laws restrict the possession of high-capacity magazines, regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. According to a statement from a DC police quoted by AP, NBC inquired if they could use a high capacity magazine for their segment before it aired. “NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and their request was denied,” the statement said. However, TMZ claims that NBC did get police permission. “Here is a magazine for ammunition that carries 30 bullets,” Gregory said during the interview holding the magazine in his hand. “Now, isn’t it possible that if we got rid of these, if we replaced them and said, ‘Well, you can only have a magazine that carries five bullets or ten bullets,’ isn’t it just possible that we could reduce the carnage in a situation like Newtown?’” Replied LaPierre, “I don’t believe that’s going to make one difference. There are so many different ways to evade that even if you had that ban.”

Who to believe? “DC police quoted by AP” or TMZ? I started out in snark mode, but honestly, after the numerous bad “facts” all over the news related to the recent event in Newtown (and other events), TMZ is looking better & better all the time.
Add to the confusion the fact that this took place on NBC — a network that’s been caught editing evidential content to paint a negative and incorrect picture.
Stricter laws are not needed. Current existing laws need to be better enforced. If DG is not prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, the anti-gun crowd will get a clear view into what the real problem is. I will add, this is what DG gets for being a moron. Needless to say, he should lose his job whether he is arrested and sent to jail or not. He committed a felony and everyone who watched the show or the reports online can clearly see what he did.
I feel sorry for dave gregory because he is simply & sincerely trying to find a solution to evade all of the horrible carnage of innocent school children. But this is just a “feel good” step that is a much larger problem.
…both when columbine and now newtown, and even the recent rochester killer of the firemen (who was a murderer & felon and it was illegal for him to even have any weapon yet he still had one. he was a convicted murderer of his grandmother with a HAMMER…yes he murdered using a HAMMER back in 1980 & served 17 years. If we had the death penalty in NYS he would have never gotten out to kill those firemen….) sadly in all instances assault weapons are/were banned in those states yet evil people can still get any kind of weapon to kill. btw, the rifle used but the newtown killer was not an “automatic assault rifle”. it was a semi-automatic rifle, meaning one bullet per trigger pull. you can also kill alot of people with a car loaded with explosives. do we ban cars once that starts happening?
There is NOTHING evil about any particular make of gun. There IS something evil about an individual who would murder innocent women & children. Just like hollywood directors & moguls say movie violence doesnt influence people, its the evil intentions of the individual who commits the crime. the movie violence doesnt tell the murderer to kill…
…that being said, we also do not treat mental problems nearly has good as we should, and all of these mass killings the individuals had major mental issues and yet they all were free to walk the streets. in the case of columbine it has been reasoned that the meds the 2 killers were on also contributed to their behavior. the columbine killers also broke dozens of anti-gun laws yet they still accomplished what they set out to do.
just think if someone with a gun was standing guard over any of the schools once these killers attacked them. the outcome would have been very different.
Joe Cascarelli of Westcliffe, Colo., writes the following solution, about how he and other citizens took their children’s safety into their own hands. in colorado, their volunteer posse solution had been enacted since columbine and has worked to perfection whereas the rest of the country has been suffering one massacre after another waiting for someone to do something:
“It was ten years ago that our Sheriff put an ad in the local paper to initiate the formation of the Sheriff’s Posse. About 40 of us volunteered; today we have about twenty active Posse members. Eight years ago, the Posse command staff offered to provide the local school district with daily security patrols when the school was in session, at school athletic events and during school dances including the annual prom. In the beginning, some teachers and at least one School Board member objected to having a uniformed, armed presence at the school…”
“…Using a grant, the Sheriff arranged to conduct an active shooter training event for full time deputies. Several months later, these deputies conducted an active shooter training event for the Posse over a weekend. It was intense and rigorous. Posse members who we unable to attend, were given the opportunity to participate in a one day make-up training event. Finally, our community emergency coordinator scheduled a joint drill involving all first responders-Sheriff’s Department, Fire Department, Ambulance Corps and Posse members. Those of us who participated learned so much about what to do if the unthinkable happened. Even students and some teachers participated. One high school student who aspires to be a “Hollywood make-up artist” did a marvelous job of creating simulated wounds. Entry teams practiced with other responders. Yes, we entered with stretchers and carried victims out to waiting medical personnel. The Sheriff’s Department had
professional observers who gave participants feedback on their performance. It was an event that none of us will ever forget.”
“The Posse has continued its patrols at school events and during the school day. Posse patrols have become a visible accepted part of our community. Anyone intent on harm would see armed uniformed personnel at the school daily. The Posse even has an Amber Alert at the local rodeo. When an atrocity like Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently in Newtown CT happens, all we hear is carefully crafted words of grief, heart rending interviews with parents and TV’s talking heads with knee jerk “solutions.” Well, our little community has implemented a local solution. Trained, armed volunteers daily protect our children. What is matter with the rest of the country? Where are concerned parents and citizens willing carve out some time to provide similar security?”
“Communities all around the country could do something without changing or ignoring the US Constitution which has served us well for over 230 years. Policy makers must consider all options not just meaningless “feel good” steps geared more to getting votes rather [than] improving life in America.”

I would hope that if they are really that concerned about the magazine prop that they are, along with the federal authorities, monitoring the sales of this artillery in the surrounding states. Surely to God they are tracking these gun and knife shows in the bordering states (really, across the nation) and keeeping a list of who buys what kind of weaponry? How is it a shock that David Gregory was able to obtain and display this item on tv? And why does that get investigated when we know about the gun sells coming out of states such as Virginia?
What a great use of police man hours and money – way to go DC police! You may stop David Gregory from going on a shooting spree!
This whole thing goes to illustrate the insane nature of laws against the object rather than the person. It’s insane whether your name is David Gregory or not.
People like matty will never acknowledge the fact that regardless of the intent, Gregory broke the law. He is now a criminal based on his actions. You and I, nor any other regular citizen would get a pass for this and neither should he. This is the kind of laws he wants in place, then he should be willing to suffer with the rest of us.
Agree… Cept for the suffering part… I don’t wish anyone to suffer. And I don’t think the laws already on the books for gun regulations are forcing anyone to suffer. They will work if they are enforced properly.
This is the BIG story this week? Shameless!
This story is about 2 days old, and it’s over with. He’s not in violation of any laws.
Read the law, he was in possession of a banned magazine and is guilty, now its up to the police to enforce the law and show they arent biased.
That was just silly. You’d think the guy would have had a smaller, pistol magazine to make an example of, not something resembling a fully automatic, A.K. 47 magazine
That was a typical AR-15 Magazine and could never fit an AK, nor does the size of the magazine have anything to do with whether the rifle is semi or fully automatic.
Ok..BIV-WAK U have all the answers 2day…
LOL
There is also the issue of it being used on a national news interview program. NBC could claim journalistic freedoms when it comes to having it on the air.
If they really did have permission (after being denied), Gregory and those involved on the show would have issued a press release saying so and the police would have come forward and backed them up. The fact neither side has and they’ve remained silent in the dark like an injured cat speaks volumes. Gregory is a typical liberal – thinks rules and laws only apply to the little people but to him because he’s so gosh dark enlightened. He can’t claim ignorance either because they were denied before he went on set with it. What he did was intentional. It was also a felony and he and the producers should be fired (like we little people would be) as well as treated like the criminal that they are (prison time). Simple as that.
Great..DC Police are going to spend hours to investigate the spirt of the law regarding DC gun law that restrict the possession of high-capacity magazines. NBC should lawyer-up…How about going out and finding the real bad guys and not a repoter with a prop..
It look like a box painted to look like a gun magizine…
Which goes to show you have no knowledge of what a magazine is or looks like.
No….Demonstrate to me it was a gun magizine and not a box painted to appear like a magizine…
So a member of the ruling elite thinks he has the right to brandish an illegal gun magazine. Nope. No way. Zero tolerance. Thrown Gregory in jail to rot.
Kimvweky,
“The ruling elite”?! What does that even mean? He’s a mediocre journalist, not a duke or a land baron.
But you’re right, Kim, he should get a life sentence for boneheadedly using an illegal gun magazine to illustrate a point.
Thanks for the laugh.
I agree with David Gregory about it one hundred percent. Too many kids let those movies influence their lives to the point where they think it’s O.K. to commit such acts of crime and their parents don’t take the responsibility to reprimand their kids for it. Society is way too far immoral in today’s time.
This story takes away from the greater issue; We need strict gun laws in this country. The NRA needs to wake up.
Um there are already laws and David Gregory just proved the point that gun laws don’t mean squat when someone decides they’re above said laws.
Now the question is HOW did Gregory get this? Who gave it to him? Did he buy it? With his own money or did NBC pay for it? And why, after being told by the powers that be that doing so would be a felony and thus he’s not allowed, would he go ahead and do it anyway?
Again, he makes the perfect point that, if someone wants to do something, they’ll do so whether it’s legal or not. Just like the majority of gun related deaths are due to illegally owned guns courtesy of criminals and nutcases.
Alcohol was banned during the prohibition. That didn’t work out too well did it?
And murder, rape, robbery etc are against the law and those things happen every day as well. Good people follow laws. Bad people don’t. So having good people give up their guns isn’t going to stop the bad people from continuing to wave their guns around in the faces of either good people or other bad people who have guns illegally themselves.
Well said… The better approach seems to be legislation and tax penalties on the manufacturers of weapons, ammunition, gun stores, violent video games and films promoting violence and war. If selling and making these products turn into money loss for the corporations they’ll soon lose their love affair schlepping the product… And I think we know what tribe of god’s does schlepping right? Follow the trail of coins and see where it leads $$$
In light of the horrible tragedy that happened, THIS is the news element being explored?
Lemme see if I understand this: A news show showed a visual aid to support a story. – Which they supposedly got permission to use.
Illegal is illegal, I get that.
But c’mon, people. (This is why other countries laugh at us.)
I mean, where is the outrage over this, folks!?
We have replaced simple common sense with an absurdist sense of morality that has no place in the real world. Does anyone believe that David Gregory’s possession of this magazine posed a threat to anyone’s health or safety? His interview with LaPierre was, in my opinion, a hatchet job. Yes, regardless of my personal politics, I defend his right to use this prop. What are we, children? Speak up!
Would you say the same if he had a few kilos of crack cocaine on his desk? Or what about if he downloading child porn? You know… for a visual aide? Fact is, he could have said what he said WITHOUT waving around what isn’t legal in his state. They could have cut to a photo of it. But no. He somehow got hold of something that’s against the law in his state, brought it to work, told his superiors about it, superiors told him not to do so because it’s illegal, he did it anyway. Anyway, a more effective visual aide when it comes to reporting on a school shooting would have been children’s faces. But NBC is the network that glorifies gunplay on their shows every night of the week, a quarter of which are promoted by billboards across the country of the stars pointing a gun.
Crystal – what in the world are these NBC shows that you are referring to ‘being promoted by billboards across the country pointing a gun’?
What, Revolution? They use bow and arrows and swords.
Grimm? Crossbows and maces.
There are currently no shoot ‘em cop dramas on the network as of this moment.

Thanks gary, apparently you don’t watch revolution… I clearly saw Todd Stashwick shot in the chest, dead, as well as about 3 actors each show. And it’s not about the gun use it the violence, gutted by a sword is just as mind dementing to these kids… I’m pretty sure NBC Uni owns a few cablers that run violent shows, syfy, USA, etc.
Dave,
I do follow Revolution – believe me, I’m well aware of the helicopter gun turrets at the end of the mid-season finale. Crystal specifically states in her post that there are NBC Universal billboard ads touting gun violence – and I’m stating for the record that there are none. Not Law & Order and nada for the new show Deception which premieres next Monday. I’m not talking about the content of the shows

God, we have become such an insane country. Unrestricted assault weapons everywhere are fine, but a newsman holding up a clip (which in all likelihood was empty) to make a point sets off all the alarms. The world doesn’t hate us–they’re LAUGHING at us!
If you honestly think there are zero restrictions on assault weapons in this country then you’re a fool. And the world isn’t laughing at America. They’re laughing at YOU!
Correction: We ARE laughing at your country. The United States OF America. I am so glad your forefathers did not name your country the United States of THE WORLD…or wait, yes…you would think you’re the only people IN the world! But…on topic…restrictions are much stricter in other countries and guess what? The death rate from gun violence is MUCH lower.
Oh and guess what? Literally, people in Brazil, Ecuador…Chile…they’re all Americans…but when has your country ever cared about little things called facts and accuracy when it’s just easier to assume you’re the only people who matter? It’s also easier, I suppose, for your leaders to fight back and forth rather than actually do something about it in a bipartisan manner. Forgive me while I stay in my (relatively safe) igloo and mock you.
The point of this is that DC has very strict gun laws already. David Gregory violated that law. Why should he be exempt? Because he’s trying to show up the NRA? What part of breaking the law don’t some of you people understand? By the way how is the murder rate in DC where it next to impossible to buy a legal gun?
Washington DC is currently at 90 homicides for 2012– the lowest annual rate in 50 years.
Sounds like a typical weekend in Chicago.
WoW!…. David Gregory goes out of his way, even breaking the law, to belittle Wayne LaPierre for suggesting we put armed guards at our schools while his own children go to a private school with
eleven armed guards. Now that my friends, is a liberal. Do as
I say, not as I do. Even after being told by police to not
use the magazine during his show he does it anyway. Liberal
“journalists” frequently get too emotionally involved in the
story they are covering. He knows his audience. Liberals need their “news” provided in a show and tell format, complete with a lot of
pictures, few words, yet with over-zealous emotion exhibited by
the presenter.
Careful. Your blind hatred is showing.
No, honey. They’re called facts. I know. You’re not used to them but set aside your “wittle feewings” for a moment and try using facts for a change.
Gilbert Arenas was a Washington Wizards player who pled guilty to carrying a legal gun in an illegal way in 2010. He was confined 30 days, did 400 hours of community service, and 2 years of probation. He’s playing pro basketball again though, but not in the NBA. Today he’s a starter for the Shanghai Sharks.
There was money to prosecute black sports figure Gilbert Arenas.
There is money to prosecute white media figure David Gregory.
DC is strict.
Whether gun laws need to be changed or not, I find it to be disingenuous when TV news anchors editorialize in favor of stricter laws, when most of them are being protected by private armed guards who protect the studios. Years ago I worked at a PBS station that even kept a handgun in master control room, fearing a possible terrorist takeover (a little crazy, I know, but some felt it was necessary). These anchors (like Piers Morgan) are either oblivious to their own hypocrisy, or they believe their safety is more important than your family’s safety.
I also agree in part with the NRA’s contention, as ironic as it seems, that MORE guns could be the answer. Most schools contain hundreds or thousands of human beings and they are basically unprotected. An armed guard or one full-time police officer per school seems reasonable (distributing guns to teachers is NOT reasonable). If most major business offices have protection, why shouldn’t a school?
Dianne Feinstein’s bill to ban assault weapons might be a good idea too but it will not reduce these incidents. It’s mainly a mental heath issue and luckily it’s pretty rare.
try making cookies without sugar
deadline has to have the dumbest people reading their news storys to reply with such moronic comments. why is this even a story ; david g. is trying to make the point that the use and ownership of assault weapons and the ammo is not covered in the constitution, its not arms, its not a gun, its assault military equipment. this military equipment use is for an army under attact from another army. its military equipment.
Any object can be used to kill. A hammer, a knife, our fists, our hands. They can all be used to kill, but they can also be used for GOOD!. A gun has only ONE purpose. To kill. Get rid of the guns.
You statement is so wrong just reading it is funny. It’s also easily proven wrong, is protecting your family a good thing? Feeding them, is that good? There’s two, how many more do you want?
Last I checked, I didn’t need an assault weapon to protect my family or hunt a deer. Hand guns and shotguns do the job just fine.
LOL, You said Guns, so much for your argument, down the drain and what’s the difference between my Single Shot AR and my Single Shot Hunting Rifle and my Single Shot, pistol? They both fire at the same rate one at a time are they all considered assault weapons?
