EXCLUSIVE: NBC has given the green light to Hollywood Game Night, a new hourlong game show series executive produced by Sean Hayes. The series, which has received an eight-episode order, is based on the actor-producer’s real-life “game nights,” featuring A-list celebrities hanging out and living it up in a cocktail party atmosphere. In each episode, two contestants will be transported from their everyday lives into a night of fun and celebration where they get to rub shoulders with the celebrity crowd. At the end, one of the contestants will walk away with a cash prize and a night of stories and memories. Part Hollywood club and part casual game night, the series will feature well-known names from the world of television, film, sports and politics, among other areas. “We are proud to be in business with Sean Hayes, who creatively brings so many good ideas such as this new game show romp that will be raucous and entertaining,” said NBC’s president of alternative programming Paul Telegdy. “Our audience will feel as if they are part of the party as we pull back the curtain on how today’s Hollywood stars play at home while our contestants can earn big money.”
NBC originally ordered a pilot for Hollywood Game Night in summer 2011. Hayes has had success with projects that had taken long to get on the air — the successful NBC drama series Grimm, which he executive produces, had been developed five years prior at CBS. Hollywood Game Night is produced by Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills Prods, Mission Control Media (Syfy’s Face Off), and Universal Television. Hayes, Milliner, Michael Agbabian and Dwight D. Smith are the executive producers. Hollywood Game Night expands Hazy Mills’ series portfolio to four series on the air, joining Grimm and TV Land’s Hot In Cleveland and Soul Man. As an actor, Hayes is set to recur on NBC’s Smash this coming season.
Game shows have had a regular presence in NBC’s reality lineup, with such entries as Deal Or No Deal, utility player Minute To Win It, Who’s Still Standing, and the current Howie Mandel’s Take It All.

There’s no chance the celebs will be A-list.
Man it sounds bad.
This is being done with Geek and Sundry’s TableTop. At least TableTop has interesting guests and Wil Wheaton is a solid host. Its made real, non digital games, interesting again.
Sounds like most people’s nightmare – showing up at a party where they don’t know anyone and being forced to try to interact with them while Sean’s rich friends no doubt look down on the poor trespasser in their midst. Does the guest have to be nude as well? That’s all that missing. Who would watch this dreck? And who would want to be involved? Yuck.
Crystal obviously has no friends & is awkward in social situations.
“Man, did you see ‘Hollywood Game Night’ last night?! Oh, man, you missed a good one. Erik Estrada asked if anyone had a 4 of hearts and was told to Go Fish! It was riveting!!” said no one, ever.
Sean who?
And if by “A-list celebrities” they mean Danny Bondauce, Ice-T and one of the Khantrashian sisters then yes, I believe NBC will give it a full season order! They just love crap too much.
Holy fuck you people are angry.
Don’t be mad cuz you can’t sell you’re anything of your own.
Right? Sounds like tons of fun to me!
I can picture those A-list celebs right now sipping their cocktails. Let’s see, there’s Stephen Baldwin in the corner. Gary Busey playing guitar. Shelly Long tastefully sipping tea. Norm Van Patten and Jay Leno shooting the breeze.
For all of the douchebag blog-haters (and I’m sure more will come)…having attended a number of Sean & Todd’s Celebrity Game Nights (which truly were a mix of A-List folks and non-celeb folks), they were some of the most fun nights I ever had. Having been there to see folks like Amy Poehler, Tom Hanks, Dax Shepard, Jason Bateman, J.J. Abrams, Jack Black, Ellen DeGeneres and a host of others over the years having an awesome time, it truly was what you would call, an A-List experience. I guess when you don’t know the truth, it’s more fun to bash others…especially when YOU weren’t invited to the fun.
Sean who, you say? Here’s a guy that redefined a Cable Network his company’s hit show, “Hot In Cleveland”, reviving the traditional sitcom, which most networks only strive to achieve. This is the guy who broke ground by playing an openly gay character in one of the last “great” sitcoms to ever air on television – “Will & Grace”. This is a guy who has given NBC their most financially successful show this season – “Grimm”. This is a guy who has done more for others and has made an impact on more people than you could ever do in 11 lifetimes.
Please don’t pretend to know what you’re talking about when the best you can come up with are lame assumptions and ignorant banter. Trust me…it doesn’t flatter you. It paints a pretty clear picture of who you are – someone who blames others for your lack of accomplishment.
I could list a number of game shows that feature celebs and everyday folks playing games with each other that have aired over the years to great success – but I’ll let you go back and do your homework, which you should have done before posting your comments. TV Game Shows began with celebs and everyday people playing games together. Fact. Go look it up.
God forbid, someone like Sean and his producing partner, Todd, try to bring some “fun” and watchable programming back to TV. It all doesn’t have to be about singing competitions.
xoxo
So which one are you- Sean or Todd?
Was that THE Dax Shepard? Really? Wow! It does not get any more A-list than that.
Regarding your theory that people trashing this show are all angry and bitter losers, you may want to reassess that. There are at least a few of us successful folk who read about this show and laughed our asses off. And we were laughing at Sean and Todd and NBC, not with them. Not out of malice or some sense of bitterness, but simply because we find the idea incredibly lame and non-commercial. There’s a big difference between having fun at home on game night with Dax and the boys and making a commercially viable television program, which I’m sure NBC is about to learn.
Really? Dax is the name you pull from that?
And laughing at Sean and Todd? Some of the nicest producers in the business? Loved by nearly everyone? (See previous Deadline articles for ..you know…..facts.) You’re so cool.
Big tough anonymous guy ripping on others on the internet. Now go prep for your pitch meeting for another rejection.
PS: Yes it is out of malice and bitterness.
Kudos to Hazy Mills. Your excellent work speaks for itself.
I don’t care about who’s playing. What games are we talking about? Are these real, modern board games or is this poker night, Taboo, and Monopoly?
That’s it, I’m starting a put Sean Hayes on Mt. Rushmore campaign this morning. He truly is one of the greatest Americans to ever grace this noble land.
I will be your first contestant.. I am a Dept. of the Army civilian so you will have to come on post/fort to snatch me away. Already Pre-judging a show nobody has ever seen yet. Replace negativity with positivity! That will work for me.
If you got to play charades (among other drunk games the “commoners” play) w/ a superstar you’d be all over that sh!t. IF NBC treats this like they treated the first couple of seasons of The Sing Off they’ll be fine. Arrogance gets you the Simon Cowell X Factor treatment which no one at this point wants.
*In best Hollywood Minute David Spade voice*
I remember this show before when it was called TableTop.
Personally I’m quite happy with TableTop – a show that Wil Wheaton has been doing for quite some time now. Labelling something as an original idea when they’ve clearly stolen it from Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day is not cool. If they had at least given credit where credit is due it would have been more honourable.
What I’m wondering is if we’re going to see real games, or if it’s going to be crap like Monopoly and so forth. If they at least showcase decent games then it might be worth watching. I’ll certainly give it a shot – but my expectations aren’t very high, I have to say.
So amazing how you say ‘they’ve clearly stolen it’ when you have no idea what types of games are being played in this.
Do you REALLY think NBC is going to pick up a show with a bunch of celebrities playing card games on a table?
Ignorance sure is bliss. This show is nothing like your cute little YouTube show TableTop so please drink a tall glass of shut the fuck up.
defensive much?
Having been to one of their game nights and not being a celebrity, it was tons of fun. Glad to know NBC is getting behind it. Sure to be entertaining!
Wow! An awful lot of hate for a show that hasn’t even been produced yet! Does anyone remember “Win, Lose or Draw!”? Burt Reynolds and Bert Convy produced this fun game based on a game that was played in their living rooms and it worked. And they brought A and A- celebs to play. I think the only reason it only lasted two years was because it was shown 10 times a week (network and syndication). Sean has three hit shows, give it a chance.
hot mews
You said it perfectly! Thank you! He’s such a hard worker. He’s already got a lot on his plate and for him to pick up another show is just mind blowing! Congrats to Sean.
Can’t wait to not see this. Sounds atrocious
“Win, Lose or Draw” was very bad television, and this sounds even worse.
i just wanna win some cash
Anything Dwight Smith and his company touches is CRAP! I wouldn’t touch this with a 10 foot pole. Hayes should go somewhere else if he wants a quality show.
