George Zimmerman sued NBCUniversal today over an edited 911 call from the night he shot Trayvon Martin. “NBC created this false and defamatory misimpression using the oldest form of yellow journalism: manipulating Zimmerman’s own words, splicing together disparate parts of the recording to create the illusion of statements that Zimmerman never actually made,” says the defamation suit (read it here) filed Thursday in Seminole County, Fla. The 24-page complaint adds that “NBC News saw the death of Trayvon Martin not as a tragedy but as an opportunity to increase ratings, and so set about to create the myth that George Zimmerman was a racist and predatory villain.” NBC correspondent Ron Allen, as well as Lilia Rodriguez Luciano and Jeff Burnside are also named as defendants. Luciano and Burnside, as well as a NBC producer, were fired after an internal investigation determined that the tape had been edited.
Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the February 26 shooting of 17-year-old Martin. The incident, for which Zimmerman has claimed self-defense, happen after the 28-year old man called police to report on the teen’s behavior in the Sanford, Florida gated community. Martin was visiting his father who lived there. Portions of Zimmerman’s conversation that night with the 911 dispatcher, where he was asked to give Martin’s race and other details, were removed by NBC. Claiming “severe and extreme emotional stress” over the edited tape and the perception it created, Zimmerman is asking for damages “substantially in excess of the jurisdictional limit.” While naming no dollar figure, the complaint says, “plaintiff seeks substantial compensation and exemplary damages to punish the defendants for their outrageous fraud upon the public, designed to mislead our nation, create a national uproar, forever ostracize Zimmerman, and taint his jury pool, all to profit and attract attention to their television news programs.” Zimmerman is asking for a jury trial. The plaintiff is represented by Mark O’Mara of Orlando firm The O’Mara Law Group and Philadelphia’s Beasley Firm.

This should be only the beginning. Matt Gutman at ABC should be sued as well. Much of his reporting was irresponsible, clearly biased, and had to be corrected later.
NBC’s “journalism” in this case has been egregious, and yet characteristic. Godspeed to George Zimmerman.
By all means, Godspeed to the guy who shot and killed a 17-year-old.
Self defense.
Self defense against a teen-aged boy armed with Skittles and iced tea. While Zimmerman had a handgun.
I’d say they were evenly matched, wouldn’t you?
That’s always the talking point–the kid was a veritable Tom Sawyer, walking the street with nothing but his Skittles and iced tea. Except….somehow George Zimmerman’s head got violently slammed into the pavement, breaking his nose and producing a bloody gash at the back of his skull.
Self defense. The jury will say the same thing.
Don’t forget the police photos of George’s bloody nose and bleeding from the back of head from being punched in the face and having his head slammed on the ground.
Martin was defending himself. shame he’s dead and he cannot invoke stand your ground.
Guy is in fact a liar, an absolute racist, and should be thrown in prison for life for murdering that boy… And yet NBC should and will lose this case. Thank you NBC news, you made the man whole killed someone’s baby for the color of his skin, the victim, and soon to be a multi millionaire.
Hopefully ABC will be next in line he sues, given all the video and image editing they did to make it seem like he got nothing more than a small scrape on him when in fact his head and face were bleeding big time.
he’ll win. the fact that NBC fired the people responsible is tantamount to admitting guilt.
good. it’s time the press was held more accountable for this stuff.
I wonder how and if MSNBC will cover this?
MSNBC will cover it like they always do…..have Al Sharpton show up with the New Black Panthers and hand out “Wanted: Dead or Alive” posters of Zimmerman.
I live in this county….and never seen so much BS and lies. Martin attacked Zimmerman, and Zimmerman shot in self-defense. Now all the media lies, prosecutor lies, Martin family lies, lawyer lies, are all coming out exposed. Even Tracy Martin’s Crips tat is coming exposed…
Zimmerman is innocent. Get used to it
The Feds have already sent in “response teams” to quell the possible rioting. It is just a matter of time before the state will drop its case. Well…drop charges…they have no case
The real sad part about all this is…..that there are so many African-Americans wronged by the system, and victimized in violent crime. Making Martin the “hero” for the Black community set things back a couple of decades. The media will probably pay Zimmerman $10s of millions in settlements….and the Martin’s (and their helpers) are going to ensure their son’s reputation will forever be stained
Have to be honest with all this
I’m glad to see this the whole news media template for this was designed to inflame a race war. NBC will settle this very fast they won’t ever let it go to trial.
Zimmerman’s name has been completely run through the dirt. He has been called the most vile things and has stayed silent for long enough. I’m glad he’s finally fighting back. Of course this story won’t be publicized… It’s a shame. People need to face the fact that the networks are biased beyond comprehension.
“Defendants pounced on the Zimmerman/Martin matter because they knew this tragedy could be, with proper sensationalizing and manipulation, a racial powderkeg that would result in months, if not years, of topics for their failing news programs, particularly the plummeting ratings for their ailing “Today Show” as well as for the individual defendants to “make their mark” for reporting a [manipulated] story such as this.”
The point is not if he is a racist, if he acted in self defense or any of that, the point is did NBC deliberately edit a tape to give an impression and prejudice the public instead of giving the whole truth. That is not only bad journalism, it could prejudice a potential jury, make it hard to come up with a jury, and damage the case by either having it thrown out, having a hung jury, a biased jury or a mistrial. Remember when the media use to be the ones we depended on for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but?
The issue at hand is irresponsible journalism, and NBC has been one of the biggest offenders. Whether Zimmerman was right or wrong is a separate issue, for which you all don’t have enough information.
