EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros TV is exploring casting of key roles in its high-concept drama project from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams. The project, tentatively titled Believe, already has a pilot production commitment. It is not unusual for studios to do preliminary casting work on high-profile projects before a formal green light, especially those with a strong, hard-to-find lead whose casting can make or break a show. WBTV is doing the same with the lead in its potential Wonder Woman origin series at the CW, Amazon.
Directed by Cuarón and written by him and Mark Friedman, Believe is about a girl in possession of a great gift/powers — which will come into their own in seven years– and the man who is sprung from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down. The breakdown, released this week by casting director April Webster, is searching for the young lead: 10-year-old Bo, innocent and beautiful, a regular girl who has a depth and mystery to her. While the focus is on finding Bo (see the exhaustive search Les Miserables movie went through before finding 10-year-old Isabelle Allen for the young Cosette role), I hear feelers also have been put out for the adult male lead as well as another older character. WBTV and Abrams’ Bad Robot are producing the project, with Abrams, Cuarón, Friedman and Bryan Burk executive producing and Kathy Lingg co-executive producing.

Secret powers = no thanks.
How about she has some real talent, and not just the ability to bend spoons, read minds or fart through steel?
A show about people trying to “hunt down” a 10 year old girl?
Is there going to be drama and tension there? Because will anyone believe a TV show would show a 10 year old girl being killed as part of the plot? Will viewers even watch a 10 year old girl get man-handled or brutalized as part of the plot? Why would anyone want to?
Is this the most ill-conceived concept for a TV show in history, or am I missing how a 10 year old girl in constant jeopardy can be somehow entertaining?
No, this isn’t the most ill-conceived concept in history for a TV show.
Very cool. I loved what Cuaron did for the Harry Potter series in the 3rd movie (Prisoner of Azkaban). Granted, the 3rd novel in the HP series is pretty solid, but he really elevated the kids. Likewise, his film adaptation of A Little Princess is really interesting. Hope this project kicks ass, he clearly has a great track record working with child performers!
“which will come into their own in seven years”. Yeah, because that’s about how long Abrams drags things out. I lost interest as soon as I saw the words “sprung from prison” . The word “prison” reminded me of that horrible alcatrash show which I dumped because it took FOREVER to reveal anything important. You can “Believe” me when I say I won’t be watching this program. I’ve fallen for Abrams related crap before & I won’t be making that mistake again!
This all sounds so fake and contrived. I’m exhausted and bored reading the logline. Do they just scramble ideas and character types around and put them in a new order at Bad Robot? None of these shows are relatable or intelligent. The writing has no depth just fake TV depth.
Yeah, this sounds NOTHING like the plot for Firestarter or Push. Not at all.
Oh, so it’s about a 10 year old girl. It’d be great to find a young new talent and lead her own show too. Sounds interesting.
Wow, what a great team! I think anything these two collaborate on will be successful. This might not have been the plot synopsis with fireworks people dream of with Abrams, BUT I think the storyline has some great potential and I will definitely be watching for this one to hit pilot and for sure make multiple seasons. I think a new, young actress will be fantastic and Cuaron does magic with kids. Neat concept and I bet they will do alot with this new girl of mystery. Excited!
I am very excited to find out Jake Mclaughlin will be cast as the adult protector in this new series. You guys had best watch because I am betting your better halves will be watching this wonderful young man…
