It’s officially over for NBC’s Munsters reboot Mockingbird Lane. The project’s creator/executive producer Bryan Fuller made the announcement earlier today on Twitter. “I tweet with a heavy heart,” he wrote. “NBC not moving forward with #MockingbirdLane. From producers and cast, thank you all for enthusiasm and support.”
This marks the end of Mockingbird Lane‘s two-year journey. The project was originally developed by NBC’s previous regime during the 2010-11 cycle. Fuller’s script was one of very few Bob Greenblatt kept in play when he took over the network in January 2011. It was redeveloped and, in November 2011, it was ordered to pilot, which was subsequently rolled to June because of difficulties with casting. The pilot landed Bryan Singer as director and eventually assembled a cast led by Jerry O’Connell as family patriarch Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi as his wife Lily, and Eddie Izzard as Grandpa. The pilot was lauded for its visual style but NBC brass felt the high-concept premise — a show about a family of “monsters” — didn’t quite work. The network unofficially passed on the pilot at the end of September but opted to air it as a Halloween special, in part to offset its high cost, said to be pushing $10 million. The special did a so-so 5.4 million total viewers and a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49 in the Friday 8 PM slot, giving Fuller and the project’s fans a glimmer of hope that NBC may pick it up to series. Multiple additional scripts had been written, and there was speculation that the project may be reworked to focus on Grandpa and cousin Marilyn (Charity Wakefield). But I hear among top NBC brass the decision not to go forward with Mockingbird Lane had already been made, and it has now become official.

It missed the point of what the original show was all about.
That Greenblatt went ahead spending close to $10 mil on this is testimony to his affection and respect for Fuller. While it had some good points mostly is was flat.
Yeah, great, I’d rather watch all this phony reality crap that your producing.
Could Bryan Fuller pitch “Mockingbird Lane” to another network??
Given the pilot did relatively well in the ratings for NBC on a low-viewership Friday night, Fuller could tell another network “It did well on a low-viewership Friday, and if you pick it up and put it in a good timeslot, it will do much better for you!”.
I wouldn’t be too surprised if “Mockingbird Lane” finally makes it to the air next September on another network.
I thought The Munsters was good NBC cancelled Star Trek and you know that did’nt go any were HAHA !
Truly sad I thought this was a quirky show that the family could watch together. Most are haters and want to watch another reality based show. I get enough reality in my day to day. I want to watch something just for fun. This show was fun, so I will for one miss it.
what a remake of a fun show and a pilot that had Eddie Izzard, and it was funny to boot.Oh and it could have replaced one of the trashy reality shows.Good god now we know the network ceo’s are idiots
Did any of the posters here actually see the pilot. It was odd and very different yet it had a quality about it that left me wanting more. No it’s not like the original by any means and that’s good but it did have an interesting character that might have evolved into something quite nice. The casting was perfect for this remake though the initial script could have used a little improvement. I’d like to see NBC pick up Terra Nova from Fox. It was a great SciFi that had a good size audience but Fox dropped it to pursue more crap.
Good this tripe is cancelled “The Munsters” may not be perfect but it was still fun and campy and Herman just stole the series to the end, this poor excuse of a remake I would imagine made the die-hard fans go Linda Blair.
It’s funny when people that can’t launch an “update” of an old show because they never have any original thoughts of their own, put down the classics in the genre.
The Munsters is almost 50 years old, and people still watch it every day. I guarantee you nothing on in prime time right now will be getting watched 50 years from now.
How did this news surprise ANYONE? A poorly executed remake of an old series? That seems to be NBC’s basic business plan.
This clumsily made pilot made the mistake of maijng Grandpa the lead character, which of course he wasn’t in the original. And for some unknown reason – other than cash – it was an ongoing commercial for Apple products.
Look for more NBC ripoffs in 2013, like “Deception”, which appears to be modeled on ABC’s “Revenge”.
NBC = Nothing But Copies.
Izzard was SO good…he’s a great character actor. The role was perfect for him! I thought the plait was refreshing…it could have worked. Too bad they didn;’t advertise MORE about the Halloween special…more people would have watched it if they knew about it! They shoulde have advertised on othber networks, billboards, etc.
I actually liked it. It had a little gore but I liked it visually and all.
Finally a show that had some fun ideas an was fun to watch. But I guess because it did not have any gay overtones it was not acceptable to the Hollywood crowd regardless what most Americans would like to see.
great post
As a huge fan of the original Munsters I was horrified with the hacked up rewrite I witnessed on NBC.
I LOVED the pilot! I still have it on my DVR and watch it occasionally! I thought it was fun and totally different, super fun! I’m sad that it wasn’t picked up.
I for one am disappointed. I liked the pilot. Couldn’t wait to see the next episode. I think they should have let it air for atleast one season. See where it would have gone..
I loved the show. Yeah, it may have start off a lil show and or dull…The Writer May have gotten a little more creative after the first season of shows.. I liked the boy and the Grandpa. I think the mother or Lily couldve been worked with to make the show something… My issue is that i set on hulu for months waiting and waiting for a new show to air and it never did, now i read that the shows is gone for good no retrys wow….
SLOW* Im on my Iphone5 sorry for Mistakes^^^^
