All the major networks broke into regular programming as this morning’s horrific elementary school shooting in Connecticut unfolded. A visibly shaken President Barack Obama held back tears as he spoke of the tragedy. News anchors and reporters also showed their emotions while reporting details. (CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield from the scene spoke movingly about how her two small children attend school in Connecticut just 30 minutes away.) Cable networks devoted blanket coverage and networks adjusted schedules. All three evening anchors – Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer and Scott Pelley – will be anchoring from Newtown, Connecticut, tonight.
The CBS Evening News will expand to one-hour, and CBS will air a one-hour special report at 10 PM ET. ABC World News will also be one-hour with Diane Sawyer beginning at 6:30 PM ET. ABC will pre-empt Barbara Walters‘ interview with President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for Sawyer and Chris Cuomo to anchor a special edition of 20/20 (10-11 PM ET). There’s also a special edition of Nightline with Cynthia McFadden. Brian Williams will anchor a special one-hour edition of NBC Nightly News from Newtown at 6:30 PM ET. Dateline will preempt its holiday special while Williams and Lester Holt anchor a special one-hour devoted to the shooting at 10 PM ET. On Saturday, Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie will co-anchor a special edition of Today live from Newtown, along with Holt and Erica Hill. Ann Curry and Willie Geist will report.

Whenever you have a mass shooting-it’s bad enough. When you have a situation where the majority of victims were children-it just makes it so much harder to deal with. My heart goes out to all of the families involved.
This nation is f*cked. 26 victims (20 being children; another the shooter’s mother) gone from us. We can’t be safe. My heart goes to the families of the victims.
And now the news media invades Newtown to milk this for all they can, how does doing the show from there help?
This is just so so sad.
How can we stop gun violence if everyone has a gun?? Answer: we can’t. It’s time to wake the eff up, America.
It’s not about guns. It’s about people with severe mental issues being allowed to roam the streets. Of course looking up people perceived to have severe mental issues is tricky as in the good ol days because could lock up anyone they didn’t like because of some BS excuse.
Naturally, the media is milking this like they do every tragedy – for ratings and not because they actually care. Meanwhile, while they and Obama are crying over these poor slaughtered children, they don’t give a damn about the millions of babies aborted every year. Think about it.
YOU’RE NUTS. to get on a soap box about abortion today, about ANYTHING, is bananas, insensitive, and blind.
20 kids are dead, and that makes you angry about Obama, and his stance on Abortion???
This isn’t about guns, it’s about abortion???? you’re insane. and blind. and full of irrational hate. and people like you are ruining this country.
I have no words right now. 20 young children were brutally murdered and you’re using it to advance your beliefs on abortion? You should honestly be ashamed of yourself. YOU are the problem.
crystal, you just put your BIG FAT HOOF in your mouth, now shut up and show some respect,
Wow, I’ve just learned this.
Holy s—, you (US) have to stop all those shootings. No one but law enforcers should have access to guns.
20 children. That’s just so sad and disheartening. RIP and my condolences to their families. I can’t imagine the horror they’re suffering.
The horror is made even worse, when Obama professes deep sorrow on TV… and how many innocent children has he killed with just drones and sanctions alone?
It sadly plays well for a government that really wants to disarm its population and put us all at the mercy of the TSA and our ever growing miltarized police state.
All life is precious, and its not to be used by banksters and politicians to advance their cruel agendas!
Graham, nothing is more boring and worthless as cynicism.
And nothing is more cynical than calling truth cynicism.
What kids has Obama killed through sanctions? If you’re going to dust off a 10-year old talking point from Iraq, at least be specific.
get off your stupid soapbox and go read a book,,,,,,idiot
How many people have to die before the U.S. addresses gun control legislation?? How long will Americans continue to tell themselves that guns don’t kill people, people kill people? Just compare what happened in Connecticut today with what happened outside a primary school in China’s Henan Province yesterday: A deranged man, armed with a knife, injured 22 school children. 2 seriously injured, 0 dead. In Connecticut, 20 children injured, 20 children dead. Get rid of the guns, America.
Because prohibition really got rid of alcohol. *rolls eyes* Newsflash: If someone wants something bad enough, they’ll get it whether it’s a gun, rugs or a bottle of beer. Laws won’t get in their way. Look at the hellholes that are Chicago and New York. Both have strict gun laws and both cities have people getting shot every day of the week.
You can live in “Pretend World” where all guns go away, but it simply won’t happen. I’m not talking about the 2nd amendment, just being practical. The bad guys will always find a way to get guns. Last year a guy in Norway murdered over 70 people with guns. Do you know how hard it is for a private citizen to get a gun in Norway? Very.
@Promo guy: And yet, more guns = more homicides. It’s a fact. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/research/hicrc/firearms-research/guns-and-death/index.html Is it possible to extinguish gun violence altogether? Perhaps not. But the United States is a statistical outlier in the per capita rate of gun violence as compared to other high income nations throughout the world. It is a problem that we, as a society, need to address. Throwing our hands up in the air because “The bad guys will always find a way to get guns” is an unacceptable response. Surely we can do better than that.
Yeah. Take guns away from law-abiding people, and no one will get shot. Ever.
Liberals. Endlessly clueless.
So we’re just to keep the laws as is, or relax them more, and accept the slaughter of five year old kids as the consequence?
It’s interesting to observe how easily people get manipulated by headlines that don’t put the reported incidents in any kind of rational context. It’s all about manipulating the consumers’ emotions. And of course politicians jump at any opportunity to push their agendas and news outlets use the incident to push their product – tasteless rather than compassionate, if you think about about it.
Connecticut – 121 people killed by drunk drivers last year. That’s just one state.
Yet nobody seems to notice the increase in alcohol consumption in, say, tv-series, especially those targeted at the youth market and/or demands we stop drinking. It doesn’t make for juicy headlines, it’s not “breaking news”. And I presume that most people would find that demand to be ridiculous. But they have no problem to go on and on about a perceived correlation between violence in film/tv and real life, blow any incident totally out of proportion and simply overreact. How many days will the media milk this incident, how many headlines will it generate?
Getting rid of all the guns worked in Japan, Australia, and Britain.
everywhere it’s been tried, in fact.
