Paramount Pictures announced tonight: “Due to the terrible tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken, we are postponing tomorrow’s Pittsburgh premiere of Jack Reacher. Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones.” The film focuses on a murderous gunman’s shooting spree and the man arrested claims he’s innocent.

Considering this is about a sniper gunning down innocent civilians, probably a good idea.
Good idea. Maybe more consideration by the industry that this is occurring too often, where film premieres are delayed because subject matter would upset the families of victims by the violence portrayed in films.
Um – is there also a reason related to the content of the film???
That is just silly. I can understand if the premiere was somewhere in CT, but PA? That’s just overreaching and being stupid.
Are you kidding? You are one heartless bast@rd if you think holding the movie back is wrong.
Put the PlayStation down, scrape the black off your heart and try, really really try and have just a little empathy for someone else.
Pittsburgh? What, is he jealous of the Dark Knight shooting and trying to get a little attention? Unless Reacher has a significant correlation to today’s tragic shooting, there is no reason for the postponement. Just sayin.
And the same thing happened with the DARK KNIGHT premiere just 6 months ago. When are we going to wake up and realize these aren’t just random tragedies? A gun culture in entertainment culture spills out into the general population. Children learn what they’re shown day after day. Movie after video game. It adds up.
You could take every gun out of every movie ever, there will still be psychos who want to kill people. Timothy McVeigh killed a bunch of kids with fertilizer. Should we remove cows from movies?
And I’ve yet to see one mass murder spree that was based on something out of a movie. Yet I’ve seen EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM based on what they see on the news.
Make every single movie G rated. As long as the news media continues to sensationalize these cases and turn these monsters into celebrities they will continue to happen. There will likely be a copycat attempt within 2 weeks, bank on it.
so if movies that influence psychopaths should be stopped, by the same logic are you happy to concede that guns used by psychopaths should be banned?
It is nice to see things like this happening as it shows that movie studio execs do not have hearts of steel. Although, they should really be trying to minimise disruption and damage caused by this sick individual as it feels like he is winning when he stops anything from going forward.
Sure, they did it out of the goodness of their hearts. Not because they were scared of bad publicity.
This is just a publicity stunt. Also, the comments about ‘gun culture’ here are out of place. How about the ‘untreated mental illness culture’? That would apply here I think. What about the ‘lack of parenting culture.’. Guns in private hands save lives, too, but they’re never reported that way by the ‘vulture media culture.’
How will the industry handle promoting Django? It’s extremely violent! Whatever is done, I’m sure Matt Drudge will go apeshit!
Instead of postponing premieres of movies that contain such violent acts maybe its time to look at not making films that cumulatively imprint on society the visuals and notions that contribute to violence in our society. People are numb to seeing heads blown off, semiautomatic gunfire and loss of life.
This is a publicity stunt. Shameless and calculated. Just a way to draw attention to the film – so that people who read the news will learn about the film – and to create buzz so that when it does open, there will be more people there. Sadly, it will work.
That is dangerous territory. If not just movies why not the books they are based on as well? Do you want us to start burning books as well? Once you start thinking that IDEAS are dangerous, you tread on some very thin ice. Let’s threat the sickness, not the symptoms.
That is a nice move that they postponed the premiere. Well done!
