Emmy-winning actor Jack Klugman died today in Los Angeles. The Odd Couple and Quincy M.E. star was 90. Klugman’s wife Nancy told a local TV station that the actor died at his home in Northridge. Born in Philadelphia on April 27, 1922, Klugman was a staple of American television since the mid-1950s. On 1964 he won his first Emmy for his guest role on The Defenders. Klugman also appeared in various films over his career, including 1957′s 12 Angry Men. The actor became well known for playing the grumpy sports writer Oscar Madison on The Odd Couple. The ABC series, which also starred Tony Randall as the fastidious Felix Unger, ran from 1970 to 1975. Winning two Emmys for his role on the show, Klugman had actually played Madison before on Broadway back in the Sixties. The actor had taken over the role in the Neil Simon play, stepping in for Walter Matthau. After The Odd Couple ended, Klugman went solo with his own leading man role on Quincy M.E. in 1976. The NBC series featured Klugman as an idealistic L.A. County medical examiner who investigated cases that others had written off or put down to natural causes. In 2008, Klugman sued the network over profits from the series that he claimed were due to him. NBC and Klugman came to an out of court settlement in 2010. Klugman appeared on various series and on the stage after Quincy M.E. ended and returned to Broadway in 1993 for a revival of Three Men On A Horse.

He will be remembered.
Sad news, indeed. But, getting to 90 is an achievement in itself.
Jack Klugman was a one of a kind…a classic on screen persona. What else can be said, except condolences to his family and friends.
Rest in Peace.
A wonderful journeyman actor.
I met Jack Klugman at a Coroner’s Conference back when he was Quincy. I was just a kid and was there with my mom and Sheriff-Coroner-Marshal Dad. We were at a big dinner. Since we were sitting by each other I asked if he would sign my cast. I had broken my arm in a motorcycle wreck. Of course he signed it and we had such a fun evening. I’ll never forget that. He will be missed. What a life he had.
Thanks for the laughs. The world needs more of it and will be missing you’re providing of it.
Remember him most from the Twilight Zone episodes especially the one against Johnathan Winters.
Jack Klugman – RIP. You were one of a kind. To your family – and especially Adam, who I grew up with – my thoughts and condolences are with you at this very difficult time. Know that heaven has a new angel – and the Odd Couple is back together.
David Palmer
A giant of comedy. And a nice man. He and Tony Randall were the best tandem ever on television. If you’re too young to know their work, find it.
Now he and Tony can reprise the Odd Couple from heaven as he will be sorely missed and a great actor and guy to boot!
Jack Klugman was a true character artist. Jack set the Image. He has taught us all so much. May he Rest in Peace.
Not to mention the several awesome roles he had on The Twilight Zone. Rest in peace bud.
A great loss to all of us who knew him and loved him. A totally authentic artist who always gave it everything he had.
My all-time favorite TV actor he did some great episodes of the Twilight Zone but he was perfection as Oscar Madison he was much better than Walter Matthau and Tony Randall was better than Jack Lemmon.
Having personally seen Jack Klugman at work on the set of QUINCY at Universal, I can testify to his passion for acting, and for gambling, specially taking pride in the racehorse he owned.
He was a great actor, whether as a leading man or in character roles. You don’t get that kind of maturity and grit anymore.
RIP Jack, like so many other greats, you will be missed!
what a wonderfully warm-hearted actor he was, going back to the twilight zone! RIP, we appreciate your work and will miss you.
a kind gentleman
Rest IN Peace Jack Klugman
A gentleman.
Billy Bob is real.
I grew up watching Quincy it was a great series. It predated all the CSI shows of today. He will be missed
Felix: “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar…”
Oscar: “What, what, what?!?! What’s wrong now?!? What, I didn’t die the right way? You want me to come back and do it over??”
Felix: “No, but couldn’t you, at least, have tidied the apartment before you left?”
Oscar: “Would you like, I should have done the laundry, too?”
Felix: “Well, now that you mention it . . . .”
There’s no one left on TV like him. He looked like a regular human being and also displayed the emotions of one. Twilight Zone, Odd Couple, Quincy, he had a great run. R.I.P.
Jack Klugman is Unique. A famous barber shop in Melbourne Australia shares Jack’s headshot plus signature in their window. What a wonderful Screen Actor. Another deserving Hollywood Actor has left us. We will treasure the entertainment that Jack extended to us.
This year has seen the passing of TOO MANY great actors, musicians, leaders and artists like Jack Klugman!
RIP Jack.He was so funny on the odd couple.HE will be miss and condolences to his family.
Kinda stunned hearing this. Mr. K was something else. Where’d you start with a career like his? My God…what he did in those TZ episodes, 12 ANGRY MEN and then the ODD COUPLE. Pure, raw acting…all the emotions out there. Not giving a damn about being anything but the best actor he could be. To simply connect with the audience and make us realize we’re the same, yet different. All in one basket. R.I.P Mr. K. Another mentor of mine.
He was wonderful on those Twilight Zone episodes and The Odd Couple is one of the really underrated sitcoms of the ’70s.
