Thursday saw several shows across the networks wrapping it up for 2012. Hitting highs for the first two of its three-part Season 2 winter finale, Scandal (2.7/7) ended its run last night with a new season best. The political drama from Shonda Rhimes was up 8% from last week. Earlier on ABC, Last Resort (1.2/3) was flat week-over-week, while Rhimes’ other show of the night, Grey’s Anatomy (3.1/8), was up 3% from its December 6 episode. ABC’s fast nationals may be inflated due to an NFL pre-emption in the Philadelphia market.
CBS’ numbers might also have been inflated due to an NFL pre-emption in Cincinnati, but everything was certainly up. The Big Bang Theory, the night’s most-watched show with 16.77 million viewers, rose 4% from last week. In a series of final last first-runs for the year, Two And A Half Men (4.2/12) rose 5%, Person Of Interest (3.0/8) was up 3% and Elementary (2.3/6) rose 10%. With an audience of 13.349 million, CBS won Thurday in viewers and the 18-49 demo.
Last night’s live one-hour The X Factor (2.4/7) results show on Fox saw boy band Emblem 3 voted off as the show dipped 4% from last week. The Christmas-themed Glee (2.0/5) that followed was down 9% from its December 6 episode.

On NBC, there was a double dose of Up All Night at 8 and 8:30 PM. The first (0.9/3) was down 25% from last week for a series low; the second (1.1/3) was down 8%. That was followed by the fourth consecutive night of Howie Mandel’s Take It All (1.2/3). The new game show rose 9% from Wednesday’s show. Closing the night, Rock Center With Brian Williams (0.9/2) was down 10% from last week.
The CW’s The Vampire Diaries (1.2/4) was flat with last week, while Beauty And The Beast (0.6/2) rose 20%.

This was last episode for POI VS footbal. Without footbal expect new POI 2.9 to be 3.1 with at least one or two series highs in january or february! Wich mean 0.2 increase in demo and at least 1 million more viewers so around 16 millions. For now POI is only one CBS scripted drama UP from last season! Other CBS show UP from last season is TBBT i think.
ps Good news – CBS are smart. They put POI immediately on the air from january 3th. So they know that these 3 months are best of POI – after footbal before NBA playoffs. Last season was 3+ in all episodes in these 3 months. POI for now air 10 episodes. CBS dramas are with 24ep per season. I hope they will air in all 5 weeks(thursdays) in january new episodes and at least 3 from 4 thursdays in february. If contunue with uptrend and all other shows contunie to drop POI have real shot at CBS #1 drama and even network #1 drama. If CBS air 10 ep in that period(all 3+) and stay 3ep for May sweeps and 1 for April. And in the begining of the season that looks like mission impossible!
First time I saw SCANDAL was last night. That Becky is insane. I want more of her!!!!!
Clearly Shonda has another hit on her hands with Scandal….Kerry & Company are great, and you can see its finally hitting its stride. Watch this show continue to grow come the new year, and ABC shifting it to 9 pm next season.
I liked Scandal at first but parts of it are straight out of soap operaville. The white house sex scene was embarrassing and sounded like it was written by a teenager. She infuses the show with these absurd soap opera moments which people are willing to overlook if they are rare, but they are becoming more frequent. Sure ratings are going up – probably bc football was not a factor, but it won’t last.
Anonymous – I think you are missing that this show is part soap opera. Dont think it is trying to hide that. Also confused – as not sure where this show overlaps with football audience.
A lot of women will watch football with their husbands and many men eventually return the favor by watching women-skewing shows with their wives. Scandal might have just enough David E. Kelley vibe to not turn guys off completely. Might.
You are so right about those soap opera moments. Its what made me stop watching GREYS ANATOMY years ago. Its what makes me not want to watch this. Last nights episodes’ dialogue was absurd. No one in politics talks like this.
Are you jokers all on staff of Scandal or what? Scandal is awful.
They must be. Why isn’t POI getting this much press, considering it consistently beats Scandal every week? What, does it not warrant mention since it’s not written by Shonda?
Yeesh.
Scandal was #1 last week, beating Elementary AND POI, or did you miss the memo doofus?
Scandal is the BEST breakout hit of the SEASON ..Thanks Shonda
Scandal is the kind of political thriller TV has been dying for. Great characters, high tension, believable twists, a strong central relationship and a kick ass leading lady. Why this show isn’t an even bigger hit, I’ll never know.
Scandal is dreadful, a farce. IQ of average viewer for this series must be 94.
I have an IQ of 143 and I LOVE the show. The best series I’ve seen in a long time. I’m also an Indie film maker and not easily impressed by TV.
Shonda Rhimes .. what an EXTRAORDINARY talent! Kerry Washington … I adore her in this role. She is so intense, so … ‘Liv’. Great writing, great acting, great cinematography, great editing … this show is sure to be a classic many years from now. I can’t get enough of it! WELL DONE!
Oh .. anyone who sees the ratings for this show and insists it is a farce must have an IQ of, well, 94 …
I used to like Scandal more, but now it’s ridiculous. The assassination hit a little to close to home with the Kennedy assassination, and last night’s “massacre” scene was just too mean. Really gratuitous – and I watch Breaking Bad and the Walking Dead! The sex scenes were awful last night; I don’t know if was the direction or what.
Happy to know Elementary was up a little. I’ve enjoyed watching this program so far. It’s a lot of fun & one of my favorite programs.
I don’t understand anything Peter just said. But I do know that Up All Night, should be called Down all Night. Hey oh!
Clearly, I need to start watching Scandal…
Tonight (December 14th) prime-time ratings may be impacted by the opening of “The Hobbit” in movie theatres.
While ABC, CBS, and NBC have already each announced one-hour specials on the Connecticut school massacre in prime-time, I expect they will pre-empt at least two hours of prime-time each for news specials on the Connecticut school massacre. The scheduling of such specials could also have an impact on ratings of entertainment shows going head-to-head against these specials (like Fox’s “Fringe”).
Yes, Scandal is something TV has needed for a long, long time. I think this one is on the way to becoming a bonafide sensation if the network sticks to it and promotes it. People forget that Grey’s wasn’t a smash out of the gate. I also hate to pull this one out, but I think the fact that Scandal has a black female lead is what’s keeping it from the big leagues in terms of the attention it gets. If this exact same show were made with a white actress who was a “discovery” she’d be plastered all over the magazines and probably be nominated for various awards. I truly do believe that.
But major props to Shonda for sticking to her guns and for Kerry Washington for continually being everything someone could want from the lead of a show like this. I also appreciate Shonda’s consistent and demonstrated commitment to having diversity on all sides of the camera. When I noticed last night’s episode was directed by an Asian woman named “Jessica Yu,” I thought “only on a Shonda Rhimes project.” The ground this woman is breaking won’t be appreciated for quite some time.
Actually, this hit show should be getting more attention because at last, a show with a black lead, and a black female lead at that, is a hit.
A part of me feels the same way, that if Sarah Michelle Gellar or some overpaid tv blonde was the lead, she would be on Elle, Glamour, etc every week. However, Ellen Pompeo doesn’t get much press, does she?
@where’s my coffee… I also was left somewhat perplexed after reading Peter’s commentary. And here I was thinking I was the only one left dazed & confused.
Bravo, Bravo to Shonda Rhimes for the awesome cast/writers of Scandal. Scandal keeps the viewers on the edge with every episode and each episode is so, so exhilarating. Scandal is by far the best show on television. Never have I been this excited in a long, long time to watch a show. Scandal is in a league all by itself.
January 10th can’t get here fast enough. How are we all going to do without our Scandal?!!

A lot of hater here, that kind sad to see people are dream killer…
I agree 100 percent with RLS about Kerry Washington and the MSM, as well as audiences, paying not paying more attention not only to the premise of the show, but Ms. Washington as a breakout leading lady. …Additionally, props to Shonda, and ABC, for creating worlds where people of every racial and ethnic background coexist in a variety of occupations and socioeconomic stations; true reflections of the world we live in.
Scandal is getting better and better! Yes sexscene was lame. Elementary is a feast showhe makes a great Sherlock and i really like last resort to bad it didn’t make
Say what you will about Scandal…it’s the most exciting show on network TV. There hasn’t been a show on a major network like it since ‘Lost’.
Even though it was adjusted down to a 2.4, Scandal still is doing remarkably well. And to think Shonda said that Scandal may only do 13 episodes this season. Glad ABC nixed that.
Yes That Happens to be an issue for some people, Scandal is a great show, Kerry is awesome in it,if you don’t watch scandal you are really missing out, people need to get past the black female lead issue and stop with the greys anatomy comparison, SCANDAL ROCKS
Scandal is the best show on teevee at the moment. All the characters have and will continue to do bad things and or good things. No one is wearing a white hat exclusively, which I love!! So many twists and turns. The mid season finale was WOW. Just WOW!!
Show is absolutely outstanding. Don’t watch much TV, but watch this on I tunes. First time on site. Found it trying to figure out when next episode (Episode 10) would air because I’m hooked. I just finished Episode 9 and hate that I have to wait until January for a fix. Long live Scandal!
Scandal is the best show thus far.so keep up the GREAT work cast. There soon to be # 1!!!
