Shonda Rhimes can do cliffhangers like nobody’s business. She proves it again and again on Grey’s Anatomy, which has some of the highest-rated season finales and premieres for a drama series. (And who can forger the blockbuster two-parter in 2006, which started after the Super Bowl and carried over huge ratings to the series’ Thursday episode). Rhimes proved it again with the three-part winter finale of her newest series, Scandal, which involves the shooting of the show’s fictional president. Last week, Part 1 (2.2/6) popped 10% for a a season high. (In adults 18-34, it hit a series high). Then last night, Part 2 written by Rhimes (2.5/7) jumped another 14% to a series high. The episode posted all-time highs for the sophomore series across the board — total viewers (7.4 million, up 12%) and all key demos, including adults 18-34 and 25-54.

Scandal‘s lead-in, Grey’s Anatomy (3.0/8) was even with its fast national last week, down a tenth from the final. Last Resort (1.2/4) was up two tenths from last week, but some or most of that was due to an ABC pre-emption for NFL football in the San Fransisco market from 8-9 PM.
CBS’ fast nationals may have been slightly inflated by an NFL pre-emption in Denver. The Big Bang Theory (5.3/16, 17.4 million) was down a tenth from last week in the demo but still dominated the competition as the No. 1 program of the night among adults 18-49 and total viewers. Its runner-up in 18-49 once again was Two And A Half Men (4.2/12, up 5%, 14.2 million). No. 2 for the night in total viewers was Person Of Interest (3.2/9, up 10%, 15 million). In the fast nationals, both Men and POI are posting season highs in 18-49 and total viewers, though that may not hold in the finals due to the football pre-emption. Elementary (2.3/6) was up 5%. CBS won the night in 18-49 and total viewers.
Fox’s The X Factor (2.4/7) was down 11% from last week. Glee (2.1/6) was down a tenth to match its series low (it was up +2% in total viewers to 5.5 million). NBC’s 30 Rock (1.1/3) dropped 15% from last week’s wedding episode to tie it’s series low. Up All Night (1.2/3) was flat with last week, The Office (2.1/6) was up 11%, Parks And Recreation (1.5/4) up 7% and Rock Center With Brian Williams (1.0/3) up 11%. On the CW, The Vampire Diaries (1.1/3) was down 21% from last week, and Beauty And The Beast (0.5/1) was down a tenth.

Please CBS air POI in all 5 thursdays in january 2013. All 5 episodes will be 3+ and (at least) one will be with series highs (3.4+) #2 drama for the season for CBS. With a shot for #1….if not this season next 100% sure bet.
If there is any chance CBS to get rid of Elementary and put POI after super bowl now is the time. I mean come on CBS let be professionals here. If Elementary was on Monday will be lowest rated even than Vegas. Such a crap show. In 10 pm with ONLY 2 networks competition(NO NBC only ABC) TM was with much better ratings in its 4 season. Is there any chance(in history) where networks change their minds? Or never happen before?
Grey’s Anatomy still aired on Sundays back when it aired after the Super Bowl.
And how can that Glee rating be a match for series low when it got below a 2 rating when it aired on Thanksgiving?
What Nick said – that part about the two parter is incorrect, as Grey’s was on Sundays all through S1 and S2, when the Super Bowl show aired.
But Grey’s post Super Bowl performance really gave it a huge boost as a show and played into Steve McPherson’s decision to move it to Thursday at the beginning of S3.
I’m not as enamored of Grey’s as I once was, and her last few cliffhangers have been pretty violent (shootings, plane crashes, etc) but she does know how to write soap opera.
NFL and Duck Dynasty play a role here. A&E had its biggest aud ever for the 10 p.m. Dynasty finale, both in demos and total eyeballs. You mention NFL in relation to CBS but it actually effects all nets, as does DD. Until and unless these reports are more inclusive they will become increasingly meaningless.
Shonda!
And Scandal takes the mantel as the breakout hit of the fall 2012….Seriously, that’s at least three straight weeks of ratings growth. With next week being the finale of the three-parter, I’m expecting another new high in demo and total viewer ratings.
Also, Sparky, Shonda’s shows aren’t that violent. They are action packed at times, on the edge of your seat viewing most of the time, and consistently a thrillride. Yeah, the episode with the angry man whose wife died on the operating table, was violent but it was also scary as hell. Shonda turned that hospital into a maze of scares and horrific encounters with deadly results, but it was awesome! I bet next week’s fall finales are going to be amazing!
On a different note, why is X-Factor falling so rapidly? Down 11% from last week? YIKES! If it lives to see next fall, we’re talking about a show that will be lucky to pull a low 2.0 demo and 5 million viewers. Talk about crashing and burning…
x factor contestants are very weak, especially compared to the Voice, who this season has powerhouse talent. demi lovato and britney contribute absolutely nothing to the show.demi so mismanaged her team which is why they’re gone. She’s only 20 herself and a baby herself. Britney is a total bore. Simon screwed it up again……..very much like Scandal but the actors have to slow down when they speak. It’s not only nerve-wracking but often you don’t know what the hell they’re saying.
