EXCLUSIVE: It is the end of the road for TV Land‘s comedy series Retired At 35. I’ve learned that the cable network has opted not to order more episodes of the series starring George Segal. Retired At 35 marks the first TV Land original series to get a cancellation. Its pilot was part of the network’s first pair of scripted pilots, ordered along with Hot In Cleveland. Cleveland was subsequently put on a fast track and is now airing its fourth season, with Seasons 2,3 and 4 in the 22- to 24-episode range after a 10-episode freshman cycle. Meanwhile, Retired At 35 aired a 10-episode second and final season this past summer for a total of 20 episodes over two cycles. It underwent creative changes between the first and second season, but ratings still dropped significantly as Retired at 35 lost its Hot In Cleveland lead-in during Season 2.
Airing behind the season premiere of Cleveland, Retired at 35‘s series debut drew 2 million viewers. Tasked with opening a new night of original programming for TV Land this past summer on Tuesday, where it was paired with Cleveland repeats, Retired logged 606,000 viewers for its second-season premiere in June. The other TV Land series have been renewed — most recently The Exes for a second season and The Soul Man for second earlier today.

Not surprised. It completely lost its premise in the second season and focused too much on the uninteresting daughter. The title was just an afterthought by then.
I really think the main character – Mr. Retired At 35 – and his dopey friend were the worst about the show. The rest of the original cast was pretty good, the writing was not too bad, but Mr. Retired at 35 was just not meant for that role – he was too much of a freshman actor who could not role with the classic sitcom dynamic he was placed into with veterans of comedy. Honestly, I think they could have brought in a number of veteran, young actors, like the lad who played “Bud Bundy,” or a number of seasoned sitcom actors to take the lead role and gone with more freshman actors for the supporting roles. He just was not into it, and he delivered all of his lines so dry and flat.
No surprise here. The cast was uniformly good, but the writing was awful, awful, awful! Looks like the beginning of the end for TVland in their failed experiment of original sitcoms. Except for “Hot in Cleveland” (which is starting to show its age this season), their shows are mediocre at best and unwatchable at worst. Plus, they pretty much all have the EXACT same plots: divorced people living together under one roof. God forbid they make an effort to do a sitcom with an intact, loving family. You know, like the ones they used to show when they were the (successful) network of reruns! This channel is sinking fast. With the exception of the Tvland Awards…which my family and I watch religiously every year (and the only good awards show on TV, IMHO), their original programming stinks!
Imho? Your opinion is anything but humble. What’s wrong with shows about divorced life? You don’t have enough shows about “intact” families? And guess what? Intact doesn’t always mean loving as there are plenty of “intact” and LOVELESS families. And plenty of divorced families with love all over the place. Divorced people are a huge part of this population. We are still families and we still love and if we can’t have 2 little shows tucked away in tv land without offending you then what the hell?
FAILED EXPERIMENT?
TV Land has four sitcoms that give the network good (if not better) ratings. All are very popular and have various ranges of success. Not to mention one of them has Betty freaking White!
You must hate TV Land.
Doesn’t The Soul Man have an “intact” loving family? Happily Divorced is based on Fran’s life so that is real. Do your homework before you start rambling idiot comments.
I think programming more realistic to society is not a bad thing. Besides, TVLand plays a bunch of wholesome reruns in addition to these new programs. I am happy they toned down the aggressive advertising of all their new shows during every other ad (I was starting to miss Wilford Brimley and his Diabeetus, and the medalert ladies).
Truthfully, their target market demographic for these programs share a similar life style or they are accepting of the themes in these new shows – otherwise they would not have lasted so long.
I wish they would actually bring back more variety to the reruns. I miss stuff like My Three Sons, and more than the same 5 episodes of the same five shows they rerun everyday.
This show never got it together creatively, in fact I liked season 1 more than season 2. Not really very sorry to see it go.
GOOD RIDDANCE!!!! TV Land Classic T.V.? What a joke!!!
I love this show. Maybe it didn’t do well because they kept delaying its second season premiere. People probably didn’t know it was back. I enjoyed it much more than The Soul Man.
Retired at 2.
Please retire the heads of TVLAND.
LOL!!
I didn’t like the first season at all but really loved the second season..AND I happened to adore Marissa Jaret Winokur. She definitely picked up the show. The title was never a good title as the son was the most boring character on the show. I’m sad to see it go and I can’t stand Soul Man so I would rather see that go. DO NOT TOUCH HOT IN CLEVELAND or THE EXES though.
I like all the Tv Land shows. I did not think that they gave Retired At 35 a chance. They delayed the season 2 premier and they kept changing the days. They moved it from Tuesday to wednesday.
can’t stand today’s tv/entertainment, bring back the glory years (pre-1985) of TV. too many gays, women, and blacks … chuckles!
Thank God, what a horrible show, the cast wasn’t right for the show and the writing was absolutely horrible. Good riddence to BAD rubbish.
I have looked EVERYWHERE for the name of Amy’s boyfriend- he is appearing in some commercials now, but none of the sites have his picture or name—- Who was this guy???
@Jo- Amy’s boyfriend, Jared, was played by John Ross Bowie.
The show was great the first season. I enjoyed it. It was the network that did it in, by changing the new season, people forgot about it. And adding the daughter, it wasn’t funny anymore. Such a shame. It had potential.
Call me crazy…I liked the show…George Segal is just adorable and Jessica Walters is first class fabulous….they don’t give shows a chance to succeed with an audience anymore…Many shows in the past didn’t do well the first two seasons..Dick Van Dyke’s show was one and it was a fabulous show. Even Jerry Seinfeld’s show didn’t take off at first. I think people would have taken to RETIRED AT 35 if it had gotten some publicity like the HOT IN CLEVELAND show did. I will miss the show.
