Paramount Pictures will present the first 9 minutes from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness exclusively in IMAX 3D beginning tomorrow — months ahead of the movie’s May 17th opening. Written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci, Into Darkness is the followup to Abrams 2009 hit reboot of Paramount’s lucrative franchise. The special first look will play in 288 digital IMAX locations. Here’s a complete list of those theaters.

Interesting that in the Los Angeles area, it is only showing at the limax theatres. There are only 3 real IMAX theaters in the L A basin, and its showing at none of them. I called the IMAX theater at Rave at the Howard Hughes center and they’re definitely not showing it there. They (the studio, distributor and Abrams) really missed the boat here.
Its because the 3D IMAX film reels are gigantic, and don’t have the spare room for another 9 minutes… so only digital this time around.
Judging by the initial trailer, it’s no longer “Star Trek”, is it?
Once JJ came on board, it was no longer “Star Trek.”
