Paramount just released this teaser to formally ‘announce’ the movie. Remember that attached to Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opening December 14th will be 9 minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX 3D (list of theaters here) as well as the first full trailer in front of conventional theatrical showings. The Star Trek 3D sequel opens May 17th:

So, another trailer that goes “BWAAAAAAAAAAAAA” every five seconds. How unexpected and creative.
As a trailer editor I agree. The massive low stabs you’re hearing derive from the prolific INCEPTION trailer music by composer Zack Hemsey, ripped off by every major studio since. Massive low stabs sometimes still totally work – as with ZERO DARK THIRTY which elevates dense narrative into a fierce event film – but here it’s just derivative and lazy creative. This trailer is far too obvious for anyone with ears.
Benedict Cumberbatch will save/steal this movie because, well, he’s AMAZING! And for that, I am looking forward to the film.
Mr Cumberbatch is pretty awesome. But no more so than the legend that is Spock, whether Leonard or Zachary..
Needs more BWAAAAMMM
Can we please ditch the BWAAAAAAAGH fog horn for every sci-fi/action trailer. Let’s go back to the good old fashioned orchestral build-up.
ugh. Looks even worse than the 2009 movie, and with an added bit of graverobbing too.
The last one had a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating, was the 7th highest grossing movie of that year, was easily the highest grossing Star Trek movie of the franchise and reinvigorated a franchise that most people thought was dead.
I’m guessing it’s going to be difficult to top that.
So Abrams sat down and said “Let’s make Star Trek meets The Dark Knight but not make it so obvious.”
Cue the first teaser trailer and it’s abundantly clear to everyone that’s exactly what thy did. I wonder what these Trek films would have looked like if Abrams wasn’t so obsessed with ‘borrowing’ from Nolan’s work?
Now there’s a question.
What’s so abundantly clear? It’s like THE DARK KNIGHT because, what, a supervillain is hell-bent on destruction? Because there are explosions? And how is Abrams stealing from Nolan?
Sheesh, yet another know-it-all makes a sweeping assertion without making an actual argument.
This doesn’t look like he’s borrowing from Nolan at all. People act as if the Batman films were the first to do a “dark” storyline in its sequel. If anything, J.J. Abrams is like the exact opposite of Nolan when it comes to storytelling. I get no “Nolan-esque” vibe from this trailer.
Warner Borg , you made a good point about Chris Nolan’s inspiration, but all the filmmakers are doing that . Look at, Sam Mendes’ Skyfall ( he admitted he stole a lot from Nolan’s Batman movies) and Steven Spielberg’s next sic-fi movie will be supposedly filmed in IMAX.
You mean Nolan reminded filmmakers to write good villains? Stop your whining! Revenge is a dish indeed best served cold… and it works!
Ahh, Nolan fanboys are out again? Fortunately I’d learn to ignore them long time ago.
Next thing you know, they’ll be saying that “Bridesmaids” was influenced by Nolan. Enough already.
Star Trek into Darkness of the Dark Knight Rises
Remember when Star Trek was about ideas, and not just blowing stuff up?
Yeah, I remember. But, who gives a damn? These new films retain the spirit of the original Star Trek tv show while updating those elements for a new audience.
That’s the problem.today’s audiences don’t think.Star trek makes you think..other sci-fi movie appeals to toddlers who like noise and bright lights…a shame..
As much as I enjoyed the reboot, it didn’t have the square, wonky intellectual aspirations of most STAR TREK variations that came before it. I missed that, and I’ve been wishfully thinking they would include some more Roddenberry-esque brain candy in the next one. As you suggest, this teaser doesn’t really hint at that.
Yes! We don’t need another Dark Knight-wannabe. Boo hoo. Prometheus was bad enough. Who sells the cool-aid to these guys?
Nolan doesn’t have the monopoly on large action films and certain recurring themes and while I’m as bored with film-makers bowing to his over-rated abilities as the next man it really doesn’t mean that Star Trek can’t adapt some of them for itself and provide an entertaining and well made film.
God knows the franchise was never shy about retreading itself in the past let alone the work of others. Nor did it ever shy from a good space battle, phaser fight or explosion. Particularly the movies in the 1990′s so let’s also put the ‘remember when’ crap into perspective. It’s used by those who conveniently forget the mediocrity of a lot of it’s past efforts as if no-one else ever saw them. Before any rebuttals are made I’ve seen every frame of Star Trek ever made prior to Abrams involvement. We can remember the superb episodes, but must never forget the sub par work they get mixed in with.
The teaser is good. It’s big, it’s effective and while the film itself may or may not be I’ll decide once I’ve seen it.
What a stupid title. Couldn’t they, at least, put a : in it?
Such carping! Wake-up…they are marketing a movie to 12yo fanboys. Of course it is going to invoke imagery from other successful films and go “BWAAAAAAM!” every five seconds. What did you expect? A PowerPoint lecture?
Just a teaser, but I didn’t see any stars or trekking.
Is that anything like the Dark Iron Man 3 Rises?
Actually this teaser was great, the villian looks promising, and beyond that it’s a teaser for crying out loud! Cannot wait for the longer preview.
I’m down for Wrath of Khan amped up to 11. But do we really need a knockoff of Bane’s voice???
Just enjoy the clip idiots! SMH The new generation of wannabe Trek fans really disappoint me. Looks entertaining!
Lens Flare Into Darkness.
Actually, it doesn’t look bad…as an action flick set in space (or I guess mostly on Earth, in this film?).
Remember Star Trek was basically dead before Abrams came along and revived it? It may not be Roddenberry’s Trek but these guys sure knew how to make the franchise compatible for a mainstream audience again. Everything needs to move forward and evolve in order to survive – so I don’t get why everyone’s complaining because without this there wouldn’t be any Trek at all for us to look forward to.
First off I totally agree with you Data. Star Trek was on the verge of dying and I will admit that when Enterprise went off the air I was like “Good let it finally die!” even more so when I learned they announced they were rebooting the TOS for the 2009 movie. But as I learned more about it I became more interested in it, and what sealed the deal of me seeing the movie was the design of the Enterprise (which seemed to be a hybrid of The Original Series Enterprise and Motion Picture Enterprise).
What fans fail to realize is that yes its NOT based off the storyline from TOS-Nemesis and the prequel Enterprise, but you know what? WHO CARES! Nemesis was Star Trek’s last hope to reviving the franchise and as much as I like it, it failed. In my opinion it was the combined effort of the Star Trek movie and Star Trek online that brought the seies back from life support.
People complain that the timeline was changed, and your point is? First off the initial timeline established from 1966 to 2002 was not changed, that is the whole point of an alternate reality. Or were you expecting to see a film on the Mirror Universe? Besides I know over the near 50 years of Star Trek the Federation has changed the timeline accidently and on purpose to prevent any adverse changes to its history. But do these fans ever consider what would happen if the timeline was changed against the Federation’s benefit? If the people who cant accept these movies for what they are, then they should go to holywood and not just write a script to, produce, direct, edit, and release their own Star Trek film.
Let’s just be honest now; JJ Abrams is a hack. If he’s not ripping off The X-Files, Star Wars, Spielberg or now Christopher Nolan; what can he actually do? That’s right… He writes stuff like Regarding Henry and Taking Care of Business.
I wonder how long it will be before there is a need to reboot the reboot, returning it to its ‘Star Trek’-ness from the generic morass into which it appears to be turning.
well, considering how it took about a decade to get this first sequel made, i’d say after this one, lol.
Remember when it was boring and nobody wanted to watch it?
No, I don’t. I remember that it generated millions of fans around the world who were loyal for decades, despite the fact that the studio cancelled the first series. It was a strong, original concept that relied on ideas for its story lines, and it needs to retain that focus if it wants to keep its intelligent fan base, not cater to 17 year-old game boys.
People act as if if you either have to be a brainy sci-if film like the original Star Trek franchise or a “chuck your brain at the door spectacle” like Abrams films are. There could be a happy medium between the two… That is, if there was a talented filmmaker involved in the project.
so many bitter and jealous fellow movie biz folk. i think it looks awesome. the last one was awesome. this one will be awesome. this isn’t shakesspeare, get over yourselves. ps i love the BWAHS
looks like every other $200m+ action effects film.
and btw-Star Trek was never boring.
…is that CAA (:51)?
f*ing quicktime bullshit… i’ll wait for youtube version.
