This week CBS‘ The Young And The Restless marks 24 years (1,248 consecutive weeks) as the top daytime drama in households. The soap, now in its 39th season, began its winning streak the week of December 26, 1988. That was a time before Nielsen people meters when household ratings were the main ratings currency. In women 25-54, Y&R has been No. 1 for 302 of the past 303 weeks, and in women 18-49 for 297 of the last 298 weeks.
Besides a winner, Y&R is also a survivor as the broadcast daytime landscape has changed dramatically over the past quarter century. The week Y&R kicked off its streak, there were 13 daytime soaps on the air. Today, there are only four. CBS, which has the most — two — has ranked as No. 1 in daytime for the past 26 years.

YEAH!! Congrats to the Bell Family, Sony and CBS!! I’m a loyalist to this show since I was in high school. An outstanding cast, great writing and thank you CBS for recognizing that viewers LOVE daytime drama over stupid shows like “The Chew.”
I think this will be the last soap standing because of it’s strong writing (most of the time)and production values (makes other tv shows look cheap). congrats to Y&R!. I’m a long time viewer as well.
And now the brilliant executive producer Jill Farren Phelps will make it even better
CBS is also the web that bailed on GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS for the puffball LET’S MAKE A DEAL and dopey THE TALK. Still, the Eye is committed to Y&R and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, even as the former works to reclaim the artistic excellence that once went hand in hand with its ratings glory.
Congrads to Y&R! Not the best soap on the air right now (that would be “General Hospital”) but definitely quite the accomplishment!
And, with but a few daytime dramas left on television, how is this significant?
It’s not really. The remaining soaps will be gone within five years. Shows like “The Talk” and “The Chew” are getting equivalent (or better) ratings than the soaps they replaced, and they’re much cheaper to product. Pay no attention to the weird soap fans who post on threads like this – they are out of touch with reality, and have deluded themselves into thinking that the soaps are somehow “quality” or better than talk shows. Sad.
