Some have questioned casting Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher – a 6-foot-5, 250-pound bad ass – but Cruise (5-foot-7 and slim) says he’s very comfortable in the role. Cruise told Reuters Television at the Jack Reacher premiere in London Monday that he wouldn’t have taken on the part if (author Lee) Child wasn’t happy. “You know, he created the character, I had my own opinion that I didn’t say to Lee and then he came back and pretty much reflected what I had felt about it. But had he said ‘look I’d rather not’, I would not have played the character,” Cruise said. The actor described Reacher’s size as a “characteristic” rather than a “character.” Jack Reacher is based on One Shot – one of the series of novels by Child about an ex-military policeman-turned-benevolent drifter. It opens on December 21.

5 foot 7? Ha Ha Ha Ha!! Not even close. Maybe 5’4 tops, and that’s with his high-heeled cowboy boots.
He’s 20 feet tall in the movies and that’s all that matters.
5’7″? LOL. 5’4″ is more like it.
Like most fans of the novels, I was stunned by the casting of Tom Cruise as Reacher. But I’m very happy about the advance buzz that they made an exciting movie and realize that because it’s Tom, the film is getting a huge publicity push and is seen as a high quality action film and not as violent exploitation. That means “Jack Reacher” will likely be a hit and get a sequel, hopefully based on one of the books that’s even more of a modern day western where Reacher takes on an entire town of bad guys.
Dear Tom. Of course author was ok with you. He was probably happy that big budget movie was based on his book at all. Who would they cast instead? Clooney, Pitt, Damon? Most probably some unknown new actor. Of course author was ok when superfamous Tom Cruise (who was A-list just few years ago) showed interest. It’s the fans, who should come to movie and bring their money, are unhappy. And that is much bigger problem.
do you really think the fans will not come to see this film? get real.
how much complaining can you guys do about this guy.
I for one will not go to see Tom Cruise play as Jack Reacher. After having read every one of Childs’ Reacher novels, I’m appalled that Cruise is playing Reacher. Now everytime I read Reacher in the future, I still want to envision a 6’5″, 250 pound very tough guy; not a 5’6′ Top Gun pilot.
I like Cruise in the Mission Imposible saga, but as Reacher? naw, to much of a reach for me.
I had never heard of the Jack Reacher novels before seeing this, so I brought no preconceived notions to the theater. Awesome movie, with great character actors supporting a solid star turn by Cruise. I could give a sh!t about Cruise’s height. “Jack Reacher” works.
Being 250 pounds and 6’5″ is more than a characteristic of Reacher, it has everything to do with how people view him, whether Cruise wants to acknowledge that or not. Reacher’s physical presence in the books is a huge part of how he behaves and how people behave towards him. Sorry, Mr. Cruise, you’re wrong for what Reacher was in the novels. Doesn’t mean you won’t make a good movie but it won’t be the Reacher of the books. You can’t bullshit people who actually read the books.
Right on. This is a Cruise action film that will probably do well.
It has nothing to do with the character of Jack Reacher.
That comment puts it all in a nutshell. Well said.
I would rather have seen a old Clint Eastwood play Jack Reacher than Mr.dancing in my skivvies. I’ll pass on the movie and keep with the books.
Self-justification seems to be Mr. Cruise’s go-to.
I’m no Scientology fan, but Tom Cruise is a pretty damn good actor who can still bring it. These are the same people who complain about the race or appearance of Hunger Games characters or who would revolt over a female or black Doctor Who.
Uhm, nice try, but race/sex are totally different than build.
Please. All are physical appearance traits, and not a true measure of bad assery. Just because you are one of those people I referenced above, don’t assume everyone else is, too.
The script IS INCREDIBLE. One of the best I’ve read this year right up there with DJANGO. That said, I READ the books of Reacher’s adventures and it’s no TOM. But, that said, Tom can and does bring it. I am going to risk being laughed at here, but I pictured Vince Vaughn, a shade of a three day bears, a tight buzz cut. There’s just enough gravity in his face to do this. HE FOR SURE has the chops. I will keep dreaming but yes, I will give MR C an open mind for sure. I can’t wait. AND NF FANS: get Lee’s books! 61 hours. AMAZING. Bad Luck & Trouble. Running Blind. You won’t be sorry I promise. You may not see TC but for sure you will love the character.
Not surprised. Anyone remember what he did to Mission Impossible? The movie was miles away from the TV show but a good film is a good film. If you want your favorite book to be made into a movie you kinda got to be ok with things about it changing.
This movie looks awful. Like it was filmed in one tiny corner of a studio lot. The budget must’ve been 30 million and they gave Cruise 20 of it. And that “He doesn’t care about…” speech is a pale imitation of the brilliant Keyser Soze speech that McQuarrie is ripping off from his own USUAL SUSPECTS. All of you sheep who think ARGO is any better than OK and that Cruise still matters jot me a line after you actually spend money to sit through this throwaway. McQuarrie has been Cruise’s go to guy since Valkyrie (which was bad). He also wrote THE TOURIST. Best script I read this year – gimme a break.
After a detailed search of possible actors to play Jack Reacher, the way Lee Child wrote it, I have come up with Dominic Purcell. If the series goes any further after Tom makes a fool of the character, then Dominic should be approached. Look him up if you are a Reacher fan and tell me I made a mistake. He could be a franchise maker (ie. James Bond) if the right director and producer came on board. Tom’s go at it would be relegated to the “George Lazenby” version of Bond movies.
I saw the preview for Jack Reacher right before I watched that pilot movie with Denzel. I own a few of the reacher books but Ive only read one cover to cover. Anyway as soon as I realized it was Tom playing Jack Reacher I just couldnt believe it! I dont dislike Cruise but I was like, OHH NOO, How could they destroy such a cool character. Everyone is talking about his height which I totally agree but isnt Tom like 60 years old? Couldnt they get someone a little younger, taller and buffer to start the series off?
I’m a Reacher fan & a fan of movies. Cruises isn’t Reacher & never will be. The trailers I’ve seen fit nothing in any of the books. My opinion: A bigger flop than John Cater of Mars.
