Top Gun will return to theaters for an exclusive six-day IMAX engagement beginning February 8 that will see the iconic 1986 Tom Cruise pic remastered in 3D for the large-screen format. The late director Tony Scott supervised the conversion from high-resolution original negative scans that will also result in the Paramount film’s latest Blu-ray release, a 3D/2D two-disc set due February 19. The film was a lynchpin in Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer’s venerable action stable, earning $350 million-plus worldwide and cementing Cruise as one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars.

Totally ridiculous. The editing in the action sequences is so ultra-fast, so ’4-frame cut’, that it totally defeats everything that 3D stands for. No one can even get a sense of depth in the flying sequences – all you’re seeing is ‘motion-blur’ photography.
And in regards to all these films ‘converted in post’ — it’s insane to do this to directors. At least if they’re TOLD IN ADVANCE of shooting that their film will be released in 3D, then they can compose, stage, frame (and edit – if they’re smart enough) the dramatic sequences to take advantage of the 3D depth, as well as the action sections. Look at what Scorsese did with HUGO. He utilized 3D waaaaaaaaay beyond what 99% of the directors have done, exception being James Cameron. This ‘post conversion’ – without letting directors know in advance so they can prep for it – ruins & cheapens 3D for audiences. They have little sense of what 3D can really do for a film. That’s why they’re turning off it.
