EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that the lead actress to star opposite Johnny Depp in Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister’s first directing effort Transcendence will be decided on
Friday. Emily Blunt’s dates for All You Need Is Kill are still being worked out and that may affect her availability versus Rooney Mara and Rebecca Hall. Filming on the Alcon Entertainment production starts on March 4th. The screenplay is written by newcomer Jack Paglen and was developed by Annie Marter and Straight Up Films. Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are executive producing for their longtime collaborator Pfister. Depp will play a scientist whose brain is uploaded after his death into a supercomputer by female scientist Evelyn.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Please tell me none of these women will be Depp’s romantic interest. He’s old enough to be any of their father’s.
It’s Hollywood, of course she’ll be his love interest! It’s a role perfect for actress over forty but no, TPTB like always decided to make female lead twenty years younger than male lead. It’s sexist and ageist.
That’s what I was going to ask.
And why is it always the men who get the young co-leads? If a woman has a young love interest, she’s a cougar.
The female lead is the scientist wife of Depp’s character!
Emily Blunt is sooooo boring. The other choices are much better!
Here’s hoping for Rebecca Hall. Emily Blunt is overrated, and Rooney Mara’s cheekbones just wig me out, like that lady who got too much plastic surgery in the 90′s by trying to make herself look like a tiger, but instead looks like she tried to make out with the intake of a jet engine.
This post is … strange.
Rebecca Hall was fantastic in The Prestige, so I’m sure Nolan will recommend her.
she wasn’t in The Prestige
Yes, she was. She played Christian Bale’s wife in the film.
does anyone cas people of color anymore? is hollywood becoming the last line of defense for white power. wtf?
I sort of agree with you. From the financial pov, these kind of movies would pull in more of an audience and generate interest. Who’s casting this? For Johnny I would go with Eva Mendes, Naomie Harris, Lucy Lui or Kerry Washington.
NOW it’s a movie I want to know more about. I wouldn’t dash out into the streets and buy a ticket, but a least the trailer would stand out some. ‘Whoa – look at Kerry Washington in her little lab coat’
Someone sexier/spicier/hotter, just to generate some interest? It’s about science so you need some hook for people to come. Could anyone really tell these women apart in a line up? Is there a real thirst to see Rooney Mara out there?
Yes to the wonderful Rebecca Hall. No to Rooney Mara, and big no to Emily Blunt.
people believe emily blunt is over-exposed but really she’s just prolific (i do believe there to be a difference!) and it’s unfortunate that the higher profile projects she’s been involved in have underwhelmed while the smaller movies she’s been good in have remained, well, small.
i do believe that all three deserve better than the latest johnny depp trainwreck.
I hope Rebecca gets this part it would be nice to see her reunited with Wally Pfister and Chris Nolan. She is great actress and play it well as she does with all her projects.
Rooney Mara only excels when she portrays cold female characters, and Rebecca Hall cannot credibly pull-off strong female characters. Why the hate for Emily Blunt ? She is the real deal. She stole scenes from Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada, and she was wonderful in The Adjustment Bureau. Let’s keep it real, Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, and Jessica Chastain turned down this role before it was offered to Emily.
Emily Blunt wasn’t in Devil Wears Prada
Emily was Miranda’s first assistant she stole every scene she was in.
I believe you didn’t watch the same Devil Wears Prada and Prestige as everyone else.
And you’re not a moron. Oh wait, yes you are.
Rebecca Hall can do no wrong in my book. Love her in absolutely everything. Brit to American… hottie to homely. She’s got great range and is infinitely watchable…
Can deadline explain in a good researched article why there are always the same women on the lists for roles?
All 3 mentioned are overrated, and the other usual suspects that seem to be in for every role even if they do not fit the part like Hathaway, Witherspoon, etc etc, as well.
High time for some new faces that really can act and bring something new like Ruth Wilson and Anna Torv.
Are you an agent or manager hating , that your talent is not being looked at for the coveted roles ? I just saw Anne Hathaway act ( and sing) her behind off in Les Miserables. Now, I will give you that Reese Witherspoon hasn’t given a decent performance since ” Election.”
Is it really a good idea to have a camera guy direct? No, not really.
I presume you’ve never heard of Nicholas Roeg or Zhang Yimou. That said, I think Pfister needs to get a great cinematographer to lens the film and not step on that person’s shoes. He should just worry about the other aspects of the process.
Emily Blunt, all the way. Remember “The Thin Man”? She was in the shortlist and DID namecheck Johnny’s name in an interview (about her dream future co-stars) around 2 weeks before the news came about.
AND I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT’S WRONG WITH PEOPLE? WHY ALL THE HATE FOR HER?
She made 4 films – FOUR FILMS – alone in this year, and each of them is great. “Salmon” is a bit dull, but she saved it. ’5 year’ is too long but u can read any critic and they will say she & Tom were charming in it. Looper? Your Sister’s Sister? The Young Victoria? Sometimes people just dismiss her work when her movie doesnt live up to the quality.
TBH Emily Blunt is clearly UNDERRATED!
aLSO: the age difference! u can clearly see out of the 3, only Emily IS BELIEVABLE WHEN LOOKING OLDER THAN HER REAL AGE. Both Rebecca & Rooney are too ingenuine!
Go Rooney!!!!!
I don’t like to be critical but there are so many great actresses closer to JD’s age. What is up with these young ones not that there is anything wrong with them but I would think they will have to appear older to have the knowledge and experience this character will need, maybe not. Hollywood is Hollywood and will always be I guess.
Agree 100%. Michelle Pfeiffer would be perfect: beautiful blonde with a brain. Eva Green would also be more believable and interesting as the wife/scientist than the 3 actresses mentioned.
Love Rooney, but she is WAY too young for this.
I’m a huge Depp fan and I agree it is past time that they cast him leading ladies that are closer to his own age. Yes he’s gorgeous and he doesn’t age in features but he WILL be 50 this June and it’s just disgusting to keep having him make out with 20 year olds.
To what role do you refer to renny, her role in The Adjustment Bureau or this role in Transcendance?and how do you know this and are you certain of it?it all sounds very interesting.
