EXCLUSIVE: Tribeca Film and Focus World have picked up Greetings From Tim Buckley, starring Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley. Tribeca will release the Daniel Algrant-directed film theatrically next year, with the companies working together on VOD and other digital platforms. The film, which debuted at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, follows Jeff Buckley in the days leading up his 1991 tribute concert to his distant and now deceased father. Badgley plays the younger Buckley, who shot to fame in the 1990s before drowning in Tennessee’s Wolf River in 1997. Imogen Poots also stars. Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel penned the screenplay; the Smuggler Films pic was produced by Patrick Milling Smith, John Hart, Amy Nauiokas and Fred Zollo. Tribeca Film’s director of acquisitions Nick Savva; and Focus’ EVP Strategic Planning, Business Affairs and Acquisitions Avy Eschenasy and Kent Sanderson, Director, Alternative Content & Distribution, negotiated the deal with CAA and Hengameh Panahi of Celluloid Dreams for the filmmakers. Greetings is the first of three Buckley films to be released: Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark’s Reeve Carney signed on last year for another Buckley biopic, and Mad Bastards director Brendan Fletcher is mounting is A Pure Drop, based on the book A Pure Drop: The Life Of Jeff Buckley.

Very excited for this. Penn’s performance was amazing.
Hey, Hollywood, I got news for ya: young movie-goers don’t care about artists from 1997. Three movies about this dude that nobody of my generation has even heard of? Stupid! Instead how about a documentary or a real film about Nicki Minaj and her rise from obscurity? Or One Direction and how NOBODY thought they’d make it big but they hung in there and showed the critics they were full of shit. These are the movies that will get regular movie goers to part with their hard earned money, not three films about some guy floating in the Wolf River. Get the picture, Hollywood?
Hey Asshole, I’ve got news for you. Fortunately, there are still people out there who make films for intelligent people instead of morons like you. Trust me, Hollywood has you covered.
Hey, Age Me: No one will make movies about those artists, because they make hideous, awful music and are walking, talking PR campaigns that can barely sing. Not only that, but the rise-from-nothing-to-fame story has been done about a hundred million times.
Jeff Buckley could FART more eloquently and on key than most of today’s music acts. Looking forward to seeing all the movies about the Buckleys, or any other interesting artist who had the misfortune to be born before 1995.
Also, the world didn’t begin the moment you gnawed your way out of your mother’s womb. There are things and people that happened before you that people pay attention to. If you shut your pie hole and LISTEN, you might learn.
Hey Age Me,
Are you kidding me? if the film doesn’t look good to you and your friends, don’t go and see it. There are plenty of people from that time that remember Jeff Buckley and his music. He is the son of Tim Buckley who is an equally amazing musician. Don’t be so Daft to think that just because you think it might be a stupid topic doesn’t mean that others will. Now go back and watch Transformers 4 and leave the deep thinkers alone.
lets see if you are still listening to them 16 yrs from now. Listen to Jeff Buckley with an open mind and you might just get it.
Really looking forward to this. Is Focus world part of Focus features?
It’s a terrific movie, anchored by a remarkable performance from Penn Badgely, who really can sing. He owns that part entirely. The originating screenwriter’s name is David Brendel. He made this story himself. It’s only right to spell his name correctly and put him first.
I’m so curious about this. Can’t wait to see someone portray Jeff Buckley
Saw this at TIFF and guess what…It’s good. Really good. One of the biggest surprises out of there so I’m excited for this deal.
so excited. Missed it in Toronto and then read all the reviews. Seems Jeff was done justice. Penn Badley proving to be a real actor and making all the smart choices. So excited for him. Congratulations all for finally getting this made.
Hmmm I’m interested in movies about artists from 1997.Please read the reviews. This might be promising.
This is Penn Badgley’s breakout role, TRUST ME! Also saw in Toronto and I don’t think his career will ever be the same (in a good way).
Heard about this flick, looks cool. My girlfriend saw it in Toronto and said it definitely has some legs.
Amazing news! So happy for Penn!
I’m going to assume I’m from Age me’s generation and I would like to defend us. Not all of us listen to One Direction. I for one love Jeff Buckley- and no my parents did not introduce me to him, I found his music all on my own. I wouldn’t say I know a lot of people who listen to him but I know a fair amount, and I honestly know more people who make fun of One Direction then actually listen to them.
Jeff Buckley was an amazing musician, as well as extraordinarily intelligent, sensitive and compassionate human being. My qualms about Greetings from Tim Buckley is that it is advertised as being about Jeff Buckley when, as its title might suggest, it is more about Tim Buckley, than Jeff.
I want to see a biographical film about Jeff Buckley. Perhaps fans will have to wait for Mystery White Boy or the Australian film being developed, A Pure Drop. While the scuttlebutt going around the circuit indicates that the these 2 movies in development are mostly superficial fluff and lack objectivity, hope springs eternal.
Nevertheless, while I am a true-blue Jeff fan, I think I may pass on Greetings from Tim Buckley.
