EXCLUSIVE: TV Land has closed the deal for a second season pickup of The Soul Man starring Cedric “The Entertainer” and Niecy Nash and has ordered a third season of The Exes. As part of The Soul Man renewal, the Hot In
Cleveland spinoff is changing showrunners, with Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single) replacing Phoef Sutton. The deal had been in the works for awhile, with Cedric pulling the trigger on the renewal news prematurely a month ago.
The Soul Man premiered in June as TV Land’s second highest rated series debut behind Hot In Cleveland among Adults 25-54 (1.0 rating) and Women 25-54. In total viewers, the series debuted to 1.9
million, behind Cleveland (4.8 million) and Happily Divorced (2.4 million). By the end of its 12-episode freshman run, The Soul Man lost its ratings momentum from the premiere but has done well among African Americans, posting a 3.6 rating in Adults 25-54 and averaging 1.4 million total viewers per week (in Live+7). The Exes, which averaged 1.2 million total viewers per week in Season 2, stars Donald Faison, Wayne Knight, David Alan Basche, Kelly Stables and Kristen Johnston. Both shows will return in June 2013 with 10 new episodes each. “We are so proud of these series and passionate about the characters,” said Larry W. Jones, president of TV Land.
Bowser will executive produce Soul Man alongside Cedric, creator Suzanne Martin, Eric C. Rhone, Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner and Lynda Obst. Bowser most recently served as a consulting producer on two other TV Land series, Happily Divorced and The Exes. The Exes is executive produced by creator Mark Reisman, along with Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis.

Yvette’s an amazing writer and showrunner, they are lucky to have her!
Don’t know Phoef, but Yvette is a great choice. Congrats!
Now that Bowser is on board, maybe the show can incorporate a little Living Single reunion?????
Yesssssssssssssssssssss! Great choice! We see you TV Land!
Yay, Yvette is the best.
Yvette is a great Show Runner, which begs the question of why she’d be interested in taking on this lame drivel. She’s the type of quality writer / producer that Oprah should have been seeking for OWN, not TP. … If only we could all be flies on the wall.
Dear Yvette – nikki clearly admonishes readers to NOT impersonate anyone or get the facts wrong. it is mathematically impossible for three different people to post glowing reviews of you less than three minutes apart. shame on you for gilding your own, downtown l.a. discount flower mart lily! you’re a marginal showrunner, an uninspired writer, and a terrible person. That’s the bad news. The good news is that now you’ll have less time on your hands to go around town throwing the much prettier, years younger, more talented mara brock akil under the bus. ahh, cedric…good luck with that homey.
I have worked with both Yvette and Mara Brock. Both are smart and work incredibly hard. Regardless of what one may think of their shows, these women have mentored so many young writers and inspire so many other female writers so why reduce it down to gossip? Not cool.
Dear Insider, Hate much? Thousands and tens of thousands view Deadline simultaneously. It is the web capability that also causes twitter and other websites to occasionally crash. Sad, sad, sad and sorry for you that your pettiness reached the comments section. Even sadder is your comment if you share the same gender and ethnic affiliation as both the showrunners mentioned above.
No matter what you’ve heard, we (the double-minority writers) should always seek to uplift and never seek to tear down. I’m siding with Christopher. Not cool.
Yay! Happy to hear Soul Man is coming back. I got into it a while back while watching it on Hulu. It’s a good show!
Is The Exes season three renewal in addition to the 10 episodes that were tacked on to season two last month? Or, are they just calling those 10 episodes season three now?

Classy, Insider, and so refreshingly progressive to compare working women on their beauty and youth above talent. You should be admonished for impersonating Adam Carolla.
Mrs. Bowser,
If you spend half as much time revamping this sorry show, as you do manipulating the comments on this site, well, the show still won’t make it, but at least you’ll have given it the old college try. EVERYONE who knows you, knows that you are mean-spirited, petty and extremely manipulative. WE also know that you are hardly someone who has mentored young writers. Quite the opposite. You love bashing MBA and any other writer you are threatened by.
Anyone who cares to do the slightest bit of cross referencing will quickly find out you are guilty of being a first class jerk.
you aren’t fooling a soul, man.
i went on google to see if soul man and the exes had been renewed for 2013. thank you thank you. i’m so glad they’re returning. i think both shows are very funny and looked forward to watching them. i’m in my 60s and tvland has become my ‘go-to’ channel as there is always something that’s just fun and not an awful ‘reality’ show. thanks tvland. love your programming.
Good luck, Soul Man! Yvette isn’t the right fit for this show, but best of luck.
