Fox has put in development Upstairs, a single-camera comedy from recent Columbia University graduate Shawn Wines and producer Aaron Kaplan. The project, set up at Warner Bros TV, is based on Wines’ comedy short Upstairs (video below), which has amassed more than 2 million views online. Referred casually as New Guy, the project is described as a male New Girl and centers on a tragically average guy, living with his trust-fund roommate, across the hall from their beautiful neighbor. Keeping the tone of the short, in which a couple on a first date get very pragmatical yet brutally honest about the course of their relationship, the show will feature the set of friends taking on the brutality of daily life in New York.
This marks the first sale for Wines, whose graduate thesis short at Columbia, High Maintenance, won a Silver medal at last year’s Student Academy Awards; landed on the Viewfinder, a Black List for aspiring filmmakers; and made the festival circuit. Ironically, it was not High Maintenance that opened the door for Wines but Upstairs, which he wrote and directed as a side project. Kaplan’s mom actually spotted the racy video online and made him watch it. That led to the TV project, which Kaplan developed with Wines. Wines, repped by WME and Linne Radmin, is writing and co-executive producing; Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment is executive producing.

Hilariously unfunny!
I feel like I’m watching the launch of BOYS, a new HBO spinoff and the cast of GIRLS makes an appearance.
gotta admit, one of the few internet finds that has potential … unlike the twitter and blog finds that won themselves easy development deals, there’s actual sustainable story here.
You’ve got to be kidding. Where’s the beef (jokes)? This is why I don’t watch comedy on broadcast TV. Put it this way: It ain’t Girls, which is brilliant. This is shit.
That’s the interesting thing about opinions — they’re nothing more than that — opinions.
Unless, of course, you are a high-ranking Studio Exec not on his way out or a Producer with some respectable deal that doesn’t include the word “Blind” in it or a Rep for an Agency that has only three letters in its name and they don’t begin and end with “A”.
You could’ve simply declared that it wasn’t for you and moved on to submitting your Musical about Vampires to that Contest no one’s heard of, but no, you had to make the claim that “This is shit.”
This thing is lit to high heaven. Will he have a better DP now?
That was truly awful it’s horrible and disgusting and it shows just how desperate and pathetic the networks are now they are clueless if they want to develop this. Kaplan’s mother must think anything that’s on YouTube is funny. Good going Aaron give your mom 10% and make her a co-executive producer the woman has a keen eye for talent.
I thought this was a funny two minute short. I have no idea how the premise will translate to a show, but I enjoyed the short.
ME NO GET HUMOR OF PIECE! ME NO LIKE! GIRLS GOOD!
Not bad. Not bad.
Hilariously funny!!! Sorry, but that was good.
Congrats to Aaron Kaplan and Jared from Subway!
Yay Hollywood! You gave someone a development deal based on THIS? There is hope for us all. Who has a camera because I also have a joke about anal sex?
I had a client produce a pitch with Aaron K last year. It wasn’t a great experience for the client but I have no idea how he comes to be attached to so many shows. Can anyone tell me?
Way to go Showbiz! You have lowered the bar for access one more notch. Great work. Before you know it, my can of Alphabet Soup will have a development deal. Can’t wait for the residuals.
Well deserved. Congrats Shawn!
Jeez, leave it to deadline to have everyone bringing out the pitchforks already.
I thought it was pretty funny–and I’m curious to see how the show will turn out. Best of luck to the writers!
Shawn is super talented and hard-working! This will be a wonderful and hilarious show. Go SW!
Is it a funny short that I posted on Facebook and emailed to friends when it came out? Yes.
Is it a sustainable premise, tone, and world for 100 episodes of TV? Dunno. Cf. Shit my dad says.
At least this gives hope to everyone with a digital camera.
Shawn is a really talented guy. I’ve seen a few of his shorts and they all deliver big laughs. Hopefully Fox let’s his voice be heard! Congrats Shawn!
It’s a lot funnier than New Girl. Or anything on Network. Still just appealing to that same, ironic, money doesn’t matter, NY crowd that Girls does.
ADAM LUSTICK – if ya don’t know, now ya know
Got to love the “get off my lawn” people who will bash anything on this site. I thought it was funny and shows you don’t have to have a laundry list of credits to get something made.
I like the video, but Kapital Entertainment needs to go away. Aaron is selling so many bad shows I’m beginning to think he’s blackmailed everyone in town…
The Invention of Lying. Only, that was funny.
Why all the hate? I thought this was charming and clever in an off beat sort of way. And there’s a lead character here that certainly has as much appeal as Mindy or Hannah. I’d tune in to this show.
Kaplan’s mom actually found this! This is too funny, this is what dating has really become. Kudos.
