EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is negotiating to acquire Get Hard, a comedy pitch package that will be developed as a star vehicle for Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. The plan is for Ferrell to play a rich, soft-handed investment bank manager who is sentenced to a maximum security prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He hires the streetwise guy who normally washes his car to get him ready to do hard time in the 30 days before he has to report to prison.
The script will be written by Ian Roberts & Jay Martel, who are currently executive producers and showrunners on Comedy Central’s Key & Peele. Gary Sanchez is attached to produce.
Verve and Principato-Young rep the writers, CAA reps Ferrell, who has been busy shooting the sequel Anchorman: The Legend Continues. Hart is coming off the hit Think Like A Man and is repped by UTA and 3 Arts.

doesn’t sound racist at all!
They should switch the roles. Hart should be the bank manager and Ferrell the streetwise car washer. Hart is younger, it’s actually more believable that way… now that would be comedy gold.
So this is Big Stan part 2. It has to be because it’s the same exact plot from Big Stan.
Uh…Isn’t this Big Stan with Rob Schneider?
You’re right, this is basically just Big Stan. I would know, I just watched that terrible movie on HBO Go a few weeks back.
I was thinking the exact same thing, Big Stan.
CASA DI ME PADRE was one of the best, funniest films of the years (next to TED). I can’t believe it’s so overlooked.
Go Will Ferrell, rooting for you bud!
Could not agree more, great story.
Sounds like some 1980s Eddie Murphy flick. When was the last time Will Ferrell made you laugh – not including SNL reruns?
I predict another miraculous acting performance from Will Ferrell that will be NOTHING like any of his previous performances. The guy is like Daniel Day-Lewis, only funny.
Isn’t it about time Will Ferrell share a house with Jim Carrey so they can reminisce about the time they used to be funny.
This is the EXACT same story as Rob Schneider’s comedy “Big Stan” with Schneider in the Ferrell role and David Carradine in the Kevin Hart role. Somebody call WME client Josh Lieb. He’s getting ripped off.
And it was actually pretty decent.
This is literally the EXACT plot of Big Stan.
I would take the combo of Ferrell/Hart over Schneider/Carradine (RIP) anyday. Yeah it sounds like Big Stan but I think only like 50 people saw that movie so audiences won’t care.
This is obviously an old and much used idea, but with this team who cares? Sounds perfect.
I never heard of Big Stan and just looked it up on imdb.com it sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Schneider would have to be angry enough at Ferrell to sue or Josh Lieb could sue these two writers who are clearly using his story for their pitch.
“A weak con man panics when he learns he’s going to prison for fraud. He hires a mysterious martial arts guru who helps transform him into a martial arts expert who can fight off inmates who want to hurt or love him.” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0490086/
I don’t get how people think Hart is funny? Can someone please tell me one time he was funny?
It’s funny that he thinks he’s funny. That’s how he’s funny.
Reverse the casting and the idea gets funnier….
this isn’t the plot but it so smells of TRADING PLACES
It’s a fantasy. “Soft-hearted investment bank manager”???
It says “soft-handed,” not soft-hearted.
I can’t believe the studio would buy a PITCH that is exactly the same as the Rob Schneider movie makes the rounds on cable the last three months?!!! This is exactly Big Stan — how can they waste money on this with so many ORIGINAL IDEAs laying unsought and unmade… Jesus …
Legal Memo to Josh Lieb and Rob Schneider
You guys should file a lawsuit right away. Too many people have now recognized the Big Stan angle on this. Don’t let them rip you off. You could force Warners to cancel this pitch deal. The movie won’t happen and they will have to make something original instead. It’s shocking that they bought this but they did buy it because they were completely unaware of Big Stan. Now they know. Sue them. This theft has to stop. The WGA won’t do anything about it so it’s up to you guys to do it.
Big Stan may not have been super popular but it was a funny movie. To say this new movie is a new idea is ridiculous. I like Will Ferrell but why not do something more original, or at least admit that you’re remaking Big Stan?
Only one getting the feeling that Will Ferrell is hanging onto the hot young comic to get back box office cred with a tired recycled plot? Kevin Hart should be wary.
How could this happen? Easy. Martel & Roberts had to think that since nobody really saw “Big Stan” it was a low budget straight to video movie that they could recycle it and get away with lifting the basic plot and nobody would call them on it. They also had to assume that Rob Schneider would be unwilling to raise a stink over this he’s no longer a bankable comedy star although at one point he was. They had to keep their agent and manager in the dark about where the idea came from. They had to keep Ferrell and Adam McKay in the dark about it and hope they never saw Big Stan. They had to keep Warner Bros. in the dark about it. They should be sent to writers guild jail for five years and give up all rights to this pitch. If it’s going to be remade Josh Lieb should be paid to write it for Ferrell and Schneider should get a co-star part in it.
you have no idea how the movie business works. roberts and martel were hired to write this.
Why didn’t they hire Josh Lieb to rewrite this? I predict we will learn that Ferrell has already talked to Schneider about this and apologized. Big Stan will be withdrawn from circulation it will no longer be on sale as a DVD and it won’t ever air again on cable TV. Somebody at Gary Sanchez or Funny or Die pitched this to Ferrell and McKay and told them about Big Stan or if they knew nothing about it they now have to make deals with Schneider and Lieb. That’s how the movie business works.
WTF?!! We’re remaking Rob Schneider movies now?! The world is officially coming to an end.
Ha!
Just make Stepbrothers 2 — the only funny movie Farrell has made since anchorman.
There are so many better original comedy scripts available. For them to make this silly idea regardless of where it originated is a waste of money. What happened with that backyard football comedy that Ferrell was going to make with Mark Wahlberg? That script is gathering dust at Warners. Why not make that instead? It’s a more commercial comedy for Thanksgiving weekend.
When he said “it don’t f*ckin’ matta” in The 40 Y.O. V. Oh my gosh i about crapped my pants
