2ND UPDATE: I always thought reversing fanboy disgust over George Lucas’ unbridled filmmaking greed and turgid storylines and stilted direction would be the most difficult job facing Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Iger after their deal bringing Lucasfilm to Disney was announced a month ago. Ah, silly me. Because it’s oh-so-apparent that the truly Herculean task ahead will be assuring fanboys that Disney and Luscasfilm don’t further eff up the Star Wars franchise through unnecessary synergy. Disney doesn’t even technically own Lucasfilm yet. But already ABC ensnared Star Wars characters a year ago into last night’s treacly Christmas-themed special episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. “I just saw the opening two minutes and they had Darth Vader and his Storm Troopers helping build a new house!” one Star Wars fanboy complained to me. “This is disgusting and it’s exactly what people were afraid of with Disney buying Star Wars. They are ruining the franchise by using it for trivial bullshit. Please write about this. It’s outrageous and it’s totally wrong.” I’m ubercynical, but hear the details and see this photo from the taping and judge for yourself (contd):
Maybe someone at Disney and ABC might have thought better of angering the already put-upon Star Wars fanboys with this episode. (They still recall with disgust that Star Wars Holiday Special back in 1978…) But noooooooo. According to my intel, host Ty Pennington visited the Zdroj family after the female firefighter volunteer’s own home was destroyed by the largest wildfire in Texas history. The episode featured an appearance by BMX biker Matt Hoffman, Oprah-famed chef Art Smith and “some special guests from Star Wars“. Turns out a handful of Star Wars re-enactors “including an Imperial Officer, Storm, Sand, Snow, and Clone Troopers” showed up for the taping a year ago. They were from the Central Texas 501st Legion, also known as Vader’s Fist, which is a Lucasfilm-pproved organization that coordinates do-good visits and events. “All of the Legion’s members are employed full time and come from many different industries, including but not limited to technology, public service (police officers), and corporate businesses. Each member designs and creates their own costume replica.” For this family, they made a Storm Trooper mask for the family and autographed the inside because it turns out family man Chris Zdroj and his 8-year-old twin sons have long been fans of the Star Wars saga. Whaddaya think the chances of that might have been?
Zdroj had a bunch of Star Wars movie memorabilia that he had been collecting since he was a young boy in the 1970s, but it all was destroyed when the family’s home burned down. So the 501st Legion volunteers took pieces of their own Star Wars memorabilia and donated it to the Zdroj family. According to one behind-the-scenes account, “When [one] Storm Trooper was asked why he volunteers to be part of these types of events he replied, ‘It just makes me feel good.’ [Another] says the squad members are often happy their suits include masks, “because it helps hide the tears”.

Eh. That’s not so bad. The 501st has been around for quite a while. It’s a great organization. What’s a Star Wars fan doing watching Extreme Home Makeover anyway?
Exactly! My husband has a friend who underwent chemo as a child. The 501st went to the children’s hospital several times to visit him during that trying time.
Some people just need things to complain about. And to call the Extreme Home Makeover of a family that lost everything “trivial” shows the level of intellect involved with those complaining.
Point blank- This group did a nice thing for a family in need, brought some Star Wars magic into the picture to make it extra-special and even donated part of their own personal collections. Screw the people who are complaining. They don’t own Star Wars, have no claim to the brand and if the don’t like it, turn the channel.
Stick pretty close to the Zahn books. Use Hammel unless you need a younger luke skywalker. Mark’s got the older face with wisdom to guide some padwans. A younger look close to the end of 6 would be cool then jump ahead to the older Mark Hammal character as the new yoda to lead Han and Leah’s kids in a Jedi school along with a growing new republic.
Yeah, why are they using fictional characters from subpar movies for trivial bullshit like helping rebuild a firefighters destroyed house?!?!
Spot on.
People just wanting to help people that’s what it’s all about. That’s what God wants us to do. We need more willing people, not critizers.
You said it Anonymous, they did a good thing and that is very positive. People complaining about the Star Wars uniforms being used should get a life. Star Wars stuff has been used at Movie Studio tours, parades, Movie Awards Shows, etc. in the past anyway. Using it while helping people is good in my book.
Exactly
Will this family be taxed by the IRS for receiving a million dollar home with all furnishings and a vacation?
If you win the lottery, you have to pay taxes and this family certainly should be considered a lottery winner.
Because Spiderman was busy….
Khadijah makes a good point. Disney has owned Marvel since 2008 or so and have any ‘Avengers’ ever appeared on Extreme Makeover? Obviously SW characters are more world recognized than Marvel. It seems Disney is cashing in on their new prize. Personally I do not mind, there is nothing wrong with a Cosplayer SW or otherwise helping their fellow man and getting on TV for it is just pudding. Rhetorical: Would SW fans have complained if Disney DID NOT own SW, And the 501st showed up just because?
I want to let everyone know that the 501st and Rebel Legion are professional costumers. What they do is strictly voluntary and they do out of the kindness of their heart. Everything from the costumes that they made, to the gas and lodging for travel and stay overnight, is paid out of pocket from the costumers themselves. Neither Disney or George Lucas forces the 501st or Rebel Legion groups to show up and help rebuild a house, run marathons for breast cancer, or visit children’s hospital to bring a smile to a child who needs hope. This is not a commercial stunt, but simply fans of Star Wars, helping others in need in the costumes they love.
Thanks for your good service, 501st. It’s people like you who are helping me get through it these days. Humanity is not lost, not just yet. Excellent points you made!
Thank you for doing volunteer work, and making kids happy.
as a long time member of the 501st,I second this!
i hope your kidding
I smell a new Internet Meme…
while I’m not an extreme Home fan- judging by the situation , I don’t think this is a big deal. An on the other hand anyone that bought the franchise of course is going to use characters they paid for.I’m a star wars fan , and I don’t think its a big deal. breathe and move on
I think it’s cool, myself. You often see Vader and Storm Troopers in parades, why not this? And apparently it can make some kid’s day.
Oh my, you are acting like this is ‘Ewok Christmas’ part 2. I am sure there was no high-level secret meeting about infiltrating shows like extreme home makeover with Star Wars of all things.
Also, I would gladly suffer a hundred Extreme Home Makeovers to have the moment in my life reversed where George Lucas thought midichlorians and Jar-Jar Binks were good ideas for the franchise…..
Of all the ways to get publicity though this is by-far not the worst. Now if I see a photo shoot with Darth Vader and Paris Hilton, I am out!
501st had better beware Now that the sharks at Disney have Lucasfilm don’t be surprised if they get visits from lawyers handing out cease and desists regarding wearing copywriten costumes
Since they are an already Lucasfilm-approved group I doubt they’ll get those notices. It’s nothing but good (and FREE) advertisement for Star Wars, and now Disney.
not going to happen Disney has had a great relationship with the 501st Every year disney holds Star Wars Weekends which is a fan celebration at Disney World and every year they invite the 501st to come and be in the parade. Disney Loves the 501st because they don’t have to pay them anything
501st Legion has been doing parades in disney studios in Florida for 10 years during the Star Wars Week Ends…
Disney won’t say anything about any of this, the group is as official as it can be for an unofficial group
Let me know when they rebuild Alderaan. And remember, as noted in “Clerks”, there must have been a lot of independent contractors still on the second Death Star when it exploded. How about helping out their families?
First, Lucas is donating the entire $4 billion to education, so greed has nothing to do with it. Second, fanboys should be thrilled that actual sequels will be made without Lucas, one of their primary complaints was that he was overly involved in the prequels. I seem to recall lots of promotion when the original trilogy was out. This is good!
To Mike. Lucas isn’t donating anything. It’s in a trust that he controls. Wealthy Libs create these trusts to keep the barbarians away from their doors, sooth their conscience, and at the same time fool gullible clowns who believe “they care.” Furthermore, don’t think they are doing it for free either.
The persons wearing the costumes and donating their time, money, and efforts are the ones to be praised.
Leave it a contard to fit a Limbaughesque hate rant into something completely unrelated to politics.
Actually Marcus, you’re wrong. Lucas has stated multiple times that he is donating it to education. Do your research before you state something false.
The fact that people are upset about this amazes me. The fact of the matter is, Star Wars is a CHILDREN’S FRANCHISE. It was designed like this from the beginning. If disney wants to promote star wars and help people at the same time, then more power to them.
The problem with your analysis is that there is both good and worthwhile entertainment, and then there is really, really mediocre sF#t. Guess which side Star Wars has fallen into in the past 15 years????
And don’t repeat the crap about it being just a “CHILDREN’S FRANCHISE.” There actually used to be a mythology and world of wonder in the series before it got reduced to midichlorians, endless lightsaber fights, and [INSERT OVERLY CUTE, NON-ESSENTIAL OR RACIST/ETHNIC ALIENS] designed to sell toys.
Lucas has made a huge point of saying that he’s a follower of Joseph Campbell’s thesis in “The Hero With a Thousand Faces.” Going by what has occurred the past 15 years, he must have borrowed the Cliffs Notes version from a D-level student or paid someone else to summarize it for him. The understanding’s just not there in the final film product. Lately, there seems to be more concern with how things LOOK and not WHY things happen or the motivations and actions of characters…
… And this coming from the guy who said almost 30 years that Star Wars was about the human ability to transcend technology. The sad reality is that Lucasfilm is known more for technology and graphic arts than it is for good storytelling.
Face it, even if Star Wars is not meant to be Shakespearean and performed by Laurence Olivier there could have been a bit more pride and care taken in the scripting of the last three films. Much better dialogue and acting would have been nice after 16 years… The fact that the best film by far in the series was not directed by George Lucas speaks volumes.
*************
Star Wars ending up at Disney seems appropriate.
They’re both shadows of what they once were. They’re bigger than ever but not necessarily better and certainly no longer the innovative, creative forces they once were. Both the product and new owners are among the most cynical representatives of the entertainment industry and emblematic of what’s wrong with films today…
I used to love both Disney and Star Wars. When I realized they were now giving the finger to the older fans and producing some questionable entertainment with messages that responsible parents SHOULD monitor on top of the endless merchandizing they’re known for, that’s when the love turned to disgust.
We can’t even see much original Disney product on television anymore in addition to the original Star Wars films (not the special editions). It’s a mystery to many of us why the older, more human films are shelved and the newer, hipper and more disposable pictures are put on such a high pedestal now.
“There actually used to be a mythology and world of wonder in the series before it got reduced to midichlorians, endless lightsaber fights, and [INSERT OVERLY CUTE, NON-ESSENTIAL OR RACIST/ETHNIC ALIENS] designed to sell toys.”
Yeah right, that’s why when Harrison Ford suggested killing the character of Han Solo off in ROTJ, Lucas said he didn’t think there was a market for a “dead Han Solo action figure”. Fact is, George Lucas was only thinking of ways to make money from merchandising from very early on.
This goes to show the damage that Lucas has done to his own legacy. The original movies were never designed to be “for kids”. It was meant to appeal to people between 15 and 30. Lucas with the influence of Spielberg’s incessant toy marketing franchise advice turned the movies into 2 hour commercials to sell more crap. The prequels were nothing but ways to bring in new characters to market with the story being directed at 8 year olds.
WRONG! Read his biography or just read period. KIDS movies, wholesome entertainment is what they were always intended… duh. Why are you asshole stuck in timewarp! NEW flciks are coming. Get over that fact that your childhood was raped, (sucks to be you) speak only for yourself and you are in the minority….
Geez, it never ends with you bitter fuckholes.
The only reason this wasn’t done under Lucas was that he wanted too much money for cameos. This is right in line with his vision of the brand I am sure.
Actually this has been done under Lucas for over 15 years.
Stop with the lies.
This is a good thing, it doesn’t have anything to do with Disney. It has to do with the charitiable works of 501st, a fan club that participates in lots of charitiable events.
It’s a sign of the times that a Storm Trooper would have to take a job pushing a broom. Pretty soon there won’t be even those kind of jobs.
LOL…great comment!
If you want to see Star Wars “defiled”, go to any large fandom convention. What the fans themselves do is worse than anything Disney is likely to do.
These people in the Star Wars getups, were not paid by Disney or Lucas. Thank you, Nikki for telling us that.
Seriously people…I can understand cynicism, but sometimes it’s just not warranted.
Let the hate go.
It leads to the darkside.
Well…better this than Disney dredging up the Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978!
Seriously. Like Star Wars Pez dispensers aren’t a trivial waste? LOL! It’s not real. It’s a movie. And the world keeps on turning. The way I see it, the “nobility” of a fictional character is sacred within the boundary of the original material. All else beyond that– whatever, it’s just people being creative and getting stuff done. Being a purist over a work of fiction is a serious misuse of time and energy. I’d worry more about the omission of history that is going on in the school system right now.
“They are ruining the franchise by using it for trivial bullshit.”
Yeah, helping a family that lost everything, this is where the franchise lost it….
Doing good for people is awesome, but Home Makeover is all about feel good voyeurism, materialism and product placement before good deeds.
Some may say that’s “win win.” Okay. It’s just ridiculous to see storm troopers and assorted Star Wars characters sweeping stuff up.
I think that’s the beef here.
Is the implications supposed to be that this is not a good use of Star Wars characters? If so, that is a really backwards point of view.
Phew. For a second, I felt those waves of disgust now quite familiar to me in the last 10 years, thanks to George Lucas. Good to know it was for a good cause and a volunteer thing.
They filmed that episode long before the buyout. Disney has been a licensee of Lucas Films for more than a decade. The star wars geeks need to get a life, including the writer of this article.
This show took place last year, long before the buyout. It had nothing to do with publicity, just Ty’s way of 3 huge Star Wars fans to have something to make them smile again.
They’ve been doing stuff like this for a long time. Has nothing to do with Disney (which will hopefully restore some integrity to the series by pulling it away from Lucas). These aren’t the complaints you’re looking for, move along.
Better these guys volunteering than real government clones…
This is nothing compared to the horror that was The Star Wars Holiday Special. If you haven’t seen it go watch it on youtube.
The only thing good about the Holiday Special is the fact that Carrie Fisher’s stoned out of her guord on it — I just can’t help laughing at that.
I disagree with the sentiment in this article. The 501st is not a Lucas or Disney organization. It is a group of fans that is very dedicated to a franchise they enjoy. They are genuine volunteers. Don’t diminish thier efforts and their gesture toward the family’s loss of their home.
J has the right of it. This is a heartwarming story and absolutely a non trivial use of the Star Wars name.
