Simon Cowell’s The X Factor closed its 9th season on the UK’s ITV on Sunday night with the lowest audience for a finale since 2005 2006, according to overnight data reported by The Guardian. Declining figures this season have led to suggestions that a revamp is coming for the 10th series, the last the show has contracted with ITV. There are also suggestions that Cowell may need to return to the judging panel to save the show. Cowell made a special appearance on The X Factor UK in September, but while it helped the show win the night, it did not boost overnight ratings from the previous Cowell-less episode. Still, The Times of London writes today, “The X Factor may not be dead but either the end is nigh, or Cowell’s return is.”
This Sunday night’s season finale hit a peak of 12.8M with delayed viewings. Overall, an average 11.1M viewers (with delayed viewings) watched the two-hour show that aired from 7:40pm to 9:40pm for a 39.6% share. That was a 2M down from last year’s finale and more than 6M off the 2010 finale, The Guardian reports. Figures for the semi-final show last weekend were down 40% compared to 2010 when Cowell was still a judge, according to The Independent. (That season launched boy band One Direction.) Advertising revenues are also said to be down. ITV will generate about £85M in advertising coin from this season, according to The Guardian, about £15M down from its peak.
Amid the shortfalls, execs are mulling a revamp of the show for 2013, according to UK press reports. One “senior source” told The Sun, “It doesn’t take a genius to work out that the show is not in the best health. We have had some very strong singers this year, but the show is feeling in need of a reboot.” The show’s 2013 debut may be pushed back to coincide with kids’ return to school and arena auditions could be kiboshed for a return to intimate tryouts in front of the judges. Cowell himself is said to be heading to Britain next month for “crisis talks” after X Factor’s current run ends in the States. The judging panel could also see an overhaul with Sharon Osbourne and Cheryl Cole the subject of rumored returns in the past few months. Cole recently sued Blue Orbit Productions, a producer of the U.S. X Factor, saying she is owed $2.3M in pay-or-play cash. She was dumped from the show before it debuted in 2011.
An ITV spokeswoman downplayed the ratings declines over the weekend, telling The Independent, “The X Factor remains one of the highest rating entertainment shows on British TV. Demand from advertisers is high because it continues to attract an incredibly important audience in very big numbers.”

Since the American The X Factor will be demoted to summer due to the terrible ratings, Cowell will have an opportunity to participate.
It’s rather simple, really : the new judges are simply not as appealing and charismatic as the previous ones. I watched the show religiously when they had Dannii Minogue, Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell. When they left, so did I. I was looking forward to Cole on the US-version, but when she was fired, I didn’t care for it anymore, I didn’t even watch the first episode. Cole could have been the real ‘star is born’ moment for the show and could have provided the momentum it has been lacking ever since. Then the producers made the most boring choices when they brought in Paula Abdul (American Idol) and Nicole Scherzinger (The Sing-Off), clearly not realizing that people looking forward to a new show probably won’t be interested in one that feels like an old one. If the UK-version wants its mojo back, they should get back audience-fave Minogue the very least, ideally she would return WITH Cheryl Cole, but after the US-fiasco and recent legal actions, I’m fairly certain she wouldn’t even return their calls.
absolutely agree with this commentary
HEY Simon pay Cheryl what you promise her and for what you put her through.
The simple reason for the ratings dropping is a combination of the new luckluster judges and the show becoming a joke. Cowell likes the “Joke Acts” so much because of the hate they bring out of the viewing public, but to keep them on the show he arranged a bunch of talentless judges who will do anything he says and have no dignity or self respect when they bold face lie and save horrible acts on Cowell’s orders.
Without Dannii Minogue, the most respected and loved judge of all the seasons, and someone who never feared of telling Cowell off, and without the Cheryl Cole charm the show is like a bad parody of its former self.
People on both sides of the Atlantic are getting sick of these sing-off shows and not a minute too soon. They still make a lot of coin though, so they’ll definitely die hard.
Simon Cowell is over. He has no charm. He’s an egotistical unlikable pig. It’s not about his blunt one-time shocking honesty, which is great TV. It’s that the rest of his behavior is an act. This is a guy who thinks the world of himself and it’s obvious. Remember how he was out there saying X-Factor would dwarf Idol? And he was wrong.
He’s smug, and TV must now put him out. He’s yesterday’s news.
The problem with the X-Factor is that they’ve lost touch with whom the viewers want to see as judges. Louis’ schtick is tired, Tulisa isn’t exactly family entertainment having a recent sex tape and middling success with NDubz, Scherzinger is beyond artificial and after flopping/being fired in the US she was bound to not increase ratings and lastly we have Gary Barlow who’s salvageable given his likability and genuineness.
Simon is overly-confident in the brand and has the idea that it’s paint-by-numbers for success. Add female judge who looks good on camera, a few talented singers, the requisite trainwreck contestant and go! It’s not enough, it’s predictable and viewers have grown weary.
The return of Cowell would do NOTHING for ratings. Look at the DISASTROUS state of the US version as the clearest sign he has no idea how to appeal to viewers. Gutted the judging panel and hosts, spends MORE money and has a huge drop in the ratings.
Agreed, all that money for khloe katdashian, britney spears, and demi lovato, and the ratings dropped! This year was a trainwreck for the x factor usa. He needs to find some good female judges(pink, lady gaga, beyonce) and fire khloe as a host
That is life of show business. All shows and programs get to an end. Time comes when viewers are tired from it and want to watch something new. E.R, X Files, Firends, Frasier, House, 24 and others – all hugely popular but they all came to and end.
It’s been 9 seasons? No wonder people are tired of it. I think that all those shows with that format are dead now in other countries. There was Idol, Popstars, then cam X Factor and Voice. In my country I watched our version of X Factor for 2 seasons. And then I lost interest and stopped watching.
Voice is the newest favorite show in the world. People will watch it for 2-3 years and then will lost interest. That is life. Only that American Idol is unique exception. It’s still beyond me how americans keep watching that boring show. That format that American Idol is based on died years ago in all countries.
Simon, your shows are yesterday’s news.
Buh-bye!
Cheryl Cole is nothing special believe me. America has prettier women. Why all the fuss? Simon fancies her and won’t stop until he gets her as he is used to getting what he wants. Cheryl Cole cannot sing and therefore should not be judging a singing competiton. Her looks is all she has and Simon made her now she thinks she is bigger than him. Quite funny really. And to all the Americans that say the English do not support their own, it is the same as you not supporting your own, Nicole Scherzinger, who is talented, can sing and dance and is more beautiful. Cheryl is jealous of Nicole because Simon gave her the job. Very bitter woman.
