as someone who doesn’t enjoy sci-fi /fantasy/ genre I’m not thrilled with these so far. The military one sounds interesting except for the military part. Personally, as a 20-something woman without an interest in genre, I wish the CW would do something more fun — like comedies (like New Girl) or a musical (like NAshville or Smash or Glee) or a dance show or if it was a drama something set in a fun, apsirational intreesting world like in Dubai or something set at studio 54?
CW gave you fun and light hearted shows. Carrie Diaries and Emily Owens MD for instance. But you girls just don’t wanna watch it. If thats the case, I think it’ll be best for us guys to take over the channel.
I am personally thrilled with this list of new offerings, except for the military show and “Blink.” Shows need to have a twist. Right now am watching “Arrow,” “Vampire Diaries” and “Beauty and the Beast” on the CW. As far as I am concerned, the rest could be swept away and replaced by these new shows. My point here is that all females don’t have the same taste, and those who like the genre shows are not just the guys.
You have a point. I think genre shows have a real future on CW. As much as I like soap opera once in a while, I think CW went overboard when they made their whole line up except fridays, a teen soap marathon. Clearly even girls are not that interested in them. If Twilight and Hunger Games’ success are any indication, I’d say CW is going in the right direction for their network.
Yeah, make the cw just like Syfy except with actual science fiction shows.
I am a girl, and I for one love genre shows. The girlie shows like carrie diaries are everywhere, just change the channel. They’re cookie cutter shows that all the networks have. I’m sick of the gossip girls, the cop procedurals, the medical dramas. It’s about time for genre to take over. As a fan of vampire diaries, I’m looking forward to The Originals. I think the period piece Reign sounds interesting, but likely won’t find any success on the cw, should it be greenlighted. And Oxygen sounds almost exactly like Roswell. I loved that show, but I think I’ll pass on this version unless some stellar casting is done for it.
I really want The Originals to be picked up! That sounds so amazing & I’m a huge fan of 3 actors that have been cast in it!
The Hundred-Love post apocalyptic dramas & this one sounds really amazing!
Oxygen-Love that it’s a mix of romance & genre elements. This sounds so good!
The Tomorrow People-I loved Heroes when it was on, so I’m so happy the CW picked up a pilot about superheros! Also Julie Plec is an amazing show runner so I think the pilot will be really good!
The Selection also sounds really good! It would be interesting to see Reign because the CW doesn’t have any of that type of show on their channel currently. Not too interested in Blink, but Company Town sounds good especially since Sera Gamble is behind it!
Looks like CW is the only network that wants a diverse point of view in their story telling. Good for them.
The pilots Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS are mostly written by men.
It’s sad. I guess Shonda Rhimes success has made no difference at all in terms of opening the network minds to female and diverse voices. Hope Nellie or Nikki will write about this.
Don’t forget Karyn Usher wrote a great pilot.
I’m not in the CW demo anymore, so I realize I’m not in tune any longer with what the CW audience is interested in seeing. But when I once was in the CW demo, I watched and enjoyed CWs predecessors: WB and UPN …shows like Buffy/Angel, Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, Everwood, 7th Heaven, Popular, Charmed, Roswell … even Hyperion Bay.
What made that old WB/UPN list interesting and successful was that it was diverse and there were very, very talented producers and writer behind those series. The list covered a lot of different genres, a lot of different POVs and ideas. Shows that attracted both young women and young men. The executives at WB and UPN were open to this audience and open to new ideas, told via stories that were interesting and fresh. I doubt today a show like Buffy, or Roswell or Felicity would even be green-lighted to pilot stage at CW, and that’s a real shame. Those were good shows that connected with their audience in a unique way that separated the WB/UPN from the other networks.
The first post here (from Kate) is right on the mark – I wish the other posters had seen that. This list of pilots from the CW is an embarrassment – I’m sorry, it is. It is a disgrace. I looked at this list and just laughed – come on, anyone (anyone) care to defend the Logline of ‘REIGN’? Anyone? “Gossip Girls meets Mary Queen of Scots.” Read that logline again – is this a comedy? Who at CW green-lighted this …this joke. How, why, would anyone want to see REIGN on broadcast television? Maybe on PBS? Maybe CW sees Downton Abby and says, ‘Hey, we can do that’. No you can’t. Maybe the viewers of CW deserve a bit better, a bit more than ‘me too.’
Anyone out there want to defend ‘The Selection’… anyone? Read that logline … someone at CW green-lighted this script, this logline? Are you kidding? “Young woman chosen to participate in a competition for the royal prince’s hand.” You’re kidding me, right? What is this, CW’s answer to ABC’s “The Bachelor”? Is this the direction the CW brass believe television is headed? Because if so, there are some people at CW exec suites who need to be fired… now.
Want another? “Blink” – Logline – “a humorous drama of a family as seen through the eyes of a coma patient.” Really? Can the CW execs who okayed this script explain to me who in the CW demo will watch this show? Tell me what 18-34 (or 12-24) year old wants to see a show centered around a coma patient?
There is some good news – the CW has no more than two slots to fill, maybe three for next fall. Hence, most of the pilots on this list will never see the light of day, and that (for the benefit of broadcast television’s future – if it still has one), is a good thing.
The Vampire Diaries is a strong show, and the back-door spin off ‘The Originals’ will make the fall lineup. That leaves two other pilots to pick up from this list – I’m guessing Company Town and … I can’t even guess. It’s a toss up between the show about juvenile delinquents saving the world in 100 years, and a cute 17 year old girl and her robot boyfriend who just escaped from summer camp. You tell me which one you’d pick – maybe the robot one?
I can’t say for certain which pilots the CW will pick up for fall 2013 from this list, I’m not smart enough, but I can say this for certain: someone at the CW will lose their job over this list of pilots – and that’s a good thing. That’s how broadcast television will be able to rebuild itself – one brick at a time, one show at a time, one fired television programming executive at a time. You folks at CW are lucky, very lucky to work in this industry; this industry you are gradually and systematically dismantling. I wish you the best of luck in your new professions, and you’d better not come looking my way for your next job – you won’t get one.
I’d like to stress an additional point. The frustration that I have with the CW’s list of pilots is not only directed at CW – I just happened to read the CW list last after having read the pilot lists for the other ‘big four’, and was fuming mad once I got to the CW list. The list of all five broadcast networks fall’13 pilots are lack luster at best, lazy writing and script development at worse. Broadcast television deserves better, and must have better (soon) if it is to continue to grow, transform and survive – we need the very best effort possible from all five networks.
A final point – I made an omission to the list of WB/UPN series that I wanted to ensure I rectified – the POVs included on the old WB/UPN were not only ‘youth-oriented’ shows like Buffy and Veronica Mars, but also urban oriented series like Everybody Hates Chris, Moesha, Girlfiends, All of Us, as well as Sci-fi Star Trek/Voyager. There was something for everyone. Not every show was a success – some were quite bad [Homeboys from Outspace!], but each season, there was an attempt to bring in as many ideas from as many different producers as possible – success or failure, they were trying.
In addition, there have been series on WB/UPN, and now CW, that have been developed by women – right off the top of my head, Gilmore Girls with the talented Amy Sherman-Palladino. So, everyone is entitled to their opinion on these postings, I respect that, but it is important to remember that there have been successful women developing shows for the CW, and that the current list of CW pilots (IMO) is not as diverse as the prior WB/UPN list of shows in past years.
It is certainly wonderful that we have series such as REIGN and SELECTION that are developed by women [I support that, encourage that], but it is important to not forget the work that was done on shows like Gilmore Girls. Amy and other female producers/show-runners/writers have set a high bar for television quality [that's a good thing], and it is that bar that the producers and the potential viewers of REIGN and SELECTION should be trying to reach. If they do, that’s wonderful, and I’ll be the watching those shows such as REIGN and SELECTION right alongside the other viewers. But the bar has been set by series such as Gilmore Girls, Buffy, Veronica Mars, Chris – and that’s the challenge for all the series on this fall’13 CW pilot list.
If anything, this list of pilots look even more promising than last year’s one which was already filled with surprises.
Beauty and the Beast, Arrow, Carrie Diaries are all great great addition to the network. Cult seems like its going to be a huge hit as well. If anything, The Following has told us that people are interested in shows like that and if CW has more resources to hire movie actors and spend millions on ads, that show is going to be as big as the following.
Right now all these shows seem like fantastic ideas.
Tomorrow People – X-Men anyone? The success of Heroes & X-Men showed us that people actually want to watch superhero shows and if they can get as good a cast as Arrow or TVD did, then the show would be a huge hit.
The Selection – If Hunger Games has taught us anything, teenagers, even adults want to watch movies where friendship, love, danger and post apocalyptic are all present in the show. The Selection seems like its going in the right direction. I suspect that last year the show put too much emphasis on the love story and the selection that it kinda bogged down the story. But when you change up the dynamics and insert more rebellion into the story, things get so much more interesting and if done well, its going to be amazing.
The Hundred – Another high concept post apocalyptic story that would definitely fit into the audience that likes Smallville. If Smallville can do with 10 seasons, I don’t see why The Hundred can’t do 5.
Oxygen – Kinda like a mix between Roswell and Smallville. Love Story, check. Sci-fi, check. Success, check. It will probably be a fight between The Hundred and Oxygen because both seem to be very similar concept and its likely the winner will be pretty successful since there is a market for sci-fi, fantasy, love stories right now. The movie franchises tell you right away what teens and young adult want. Twilight, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, what do they all have? Love, friendship, scifi, fantasy.
You don’t see a mean girls franchise or American Pie franchise doing particularly well isn’t it.
Originals is probably going through.
Additionally, Tomorrow People and The Selection seems like great ideas for the network.
They’ll probably also need a mid season replacement and Oxygen and The Hundred would go through if either one of them is good. Company Town and Blink both sounds lame, so I rather they don’t go through.
Lastly, do you not know how to read, ALL OF THE CW PILOTS have either Female writers or EP.
Actually the male/female breakdown of this is equal. And guess what, the ones that have broken the mold havent succeeded. Peaople want the vampire diaries. thats the truth.
Another thing Re your statement about
“I doubt today a show like Buffy, or Roswell or Felicity would even be green-lighted to pilot stage at CW, and that’s a real shame. ”
Buffy – Vampire Diaries, Arrow, Nikita
Roswell – Smallville, Oxygen
Felicity – Carrie Diaries, Hart of Dixie
Please.
I appreciate your feedback – and yes, I do know how to read; I’m aware that all the current CW pilots have at least one woman at the helm – my comment about there not being women as show-runners was in response to a prior post from ‘Can Do’ – that was all.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion – you and I disagree, and that’s okay. I did read your summary of the shows currently on CW, and those coming via pilots, and I’m glad you are excited about them – that’s great. We’ll see which ones get picked up – in my mind, CW needs three (at least) – some of the current shows will need to get canceled, we’ll see which ones.
I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the pilot for Felicity – if you get a chance, I would highly recommend checking it out. Once you have, watch the first episodes of Dixie and Carrie again, and compare and contrast them. Felicity could have been a successful show on any network – same for Buffy, maybe Roswell. What I was trying to get at (and maybe I didn’t make the point very well) was that Felicity, Buffy, Roswell could have been on any network – they were not just ‘WB’ or ‘UPN’ type shows. WB and UPN had higher aspirations back then.
You look at CW shows now, and they have ‘CW’ written all over them. Maybe that’s a good thing – but I’m not so sure. Ratings matter, even for the CW. We’ll all find that out in May when the CW brass needs to cancel shows to make way for at least three new ones from this pilot list. TV is a business – ratings matter. Arrow is a winner, so is Vampire Diaries. Beyond that, we’ll see in May.
those three shows are incomparable to Buffy. not in the least.
Smallville is from the time of Buffy, Felicity, and Roswell so citing it as proof The CW is willing to commission such shows is just a bit of a lie.
The Tomorrow People & Oxygen seem very great!
The Selection & The Hundred could be cool too.
But I’m sad there is no Wunderland in the list…
And I hope Amazon will be pick up !
The Tomorrow People will never be as good as the original UK version.
Cool sounds like the CW is becoming the new syfy channel
It should!
I think the cw is going to pick up the originals the tomwro people oxgyene and the selection
If the cw picks up 5 new dramas like last pilot season thin I’m 99% sure these are the ones that will be picked up and why..
1. The Originals: The CW has yet to find a show that can retain enough the vampire diaries demo.. This would be a perfect fit.. Just look at what CBS Does aka NCIS
2. Tomorrow People: The CW really want and need another super hero show seeing the success of Arrow… They wanted to go with Wonder Woman titled Amazon, but that pilot has been pushed for next years pilot season
3. The 100 ( The Hundred) their cast is amazing and look at the amazing success of revolution, walking dead, falling skies… Post apocalyptic shows are in now…. Not to mention it sounds amazing
4. The selection: seeing that that passed on it last year to revamp it this heat tells me they really want it to work.. Plus hunger games catching fire comes out in November
5. I’d have to say Company town: not sure why
Reign and oxygen: one might get picked over company town
Blink: theirs no way this show gets picked up… No way at all mock my words
I’ve actually heard the pilot script for BLINK is amazing…it’s certainly a “different” concept, but then again, so is CULT…and looks what it’s doing.
I would be surprised to see TWO post-Apocalyptic dramas make the cut.
And I think CW is eyeing the ongoing success of NCIS and trying to capitalize with a military-based drama. The “feel” of it reminds me of Young Americans, but I’m anxious to see what the “tragedy / scandal” is that rocks the town/base.
Needless to say, even if CW picks up all 6 of these shows–I’m FINE with that, because so much of the stuff airing now (Carrie, Dixie, Cult, 90210) are just not breakout hits. I want a solid schedule where I’m anxious to tune in and not miss an episode…like on Wednesday and Thursday.
COME ON PEOPLE I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THE BLOODLETTING DRAMAS, INSULTING COMEDIES, AND REALITY CRAP! I WATCH TV TO ESCAPE REALITY, TO BRING A LITTLE SUNSHINE AND HOPE INTO MY LIFE..NOT THE JUNK ON MOST OF THE CHANNELS NOW.. GIVE ME A LITTLE ADVENTURE, SOME ROMANCE, AND I AM GOOD TO GO..I WATCH ARROW, AND BEAUTY AND THE BEAST A DOZEN TIMES A WEEK.. NOTHING ELSE ON, THAT HOLDS MY ATTENTION MORE THAN 10 OR 15 MINS.. IF I AM GONA BE STUCK FACING THE TV MAY AS WELL WATCH WHAT I LIKE
I don’t think Blink and Company Town are going to work on CW, but I am actually exited for the rest of the new shows, they look promising and I love science fiction. I hope The Carries Dairies doesn’t get cancelled, its my guilty pleasure.
CW should start promoting their shows, they expect them to work but for people who don’t watch the CW, how are they going to know about them, specially when most of this shows don’t look like the stereotypical teen drama.
With The Originals already having been picked up to series (thank god!), the CW will probably pick four out of seven remaining pilots.
Here’s what I think they should pick:
1. The Tomorrow People: Good cast. The premise sounds like it could become the “new” Heroes and I think it would make a perfect pairing with Arrow on Wednesday nights.
2. The 100: Promising cast and premise. I have strong feelings that this could become a succesful hit. Pair it with Supernatural on Tuesdays!
3. Reign: I think that Reign will get picked up to series because it’s concept is something new for the CW and it would be interesting to see how it performs.
4. Oxygen: A teen drama about an alien boy and a human girl falling in love? This has CW written all over it and I love it! And besides, the cast looks great!
I must say that this current pilot crop is rather strong. I suspect that the CW will pick 5 pilots in addition to the already picked up Originals. With Arrow, Beauty & the Beast, Hart of Dixie, Vampire Diaries and Supernatural all returning and Nikita rumoured to be back for a shortened final season that leaves room on their schedule for 3 new series, plus a replacement series for when Nikita is done and an additional midseason replacement for a new show that fails. I read somewhere that the CW is planning on sampling a few series with short seasons so I would not be shocked to see 6 new series not including the Originals) added to the CW’s docket. My predictions:
FALL SEASON
Mon – Supernatural + The 100
Tue – Hart of Dixie + Company Town (or Blink)
Wed – Arrow + Tomorrow People
Thu – Vampire Diaries + The Originals
Fri – Beauty & the Beast + Nikita
MIDSEASON
Reign
The Selection
Notes: I wouldn’t be surprised to see Supernatural shift to Mondays to act as a lead in for a new show. I think it’s fairly likely that Carrie Diaries will be cancelled. And America’s Next Top Model would be better off airing in the spring or summer. Also, Blink and Company Town are most likely competing for a spot to air after Hart of Dixie. I think there will only be one non-genre night of TV on the CW this upcoming season.
I agree
I forgot about Oxygen. I think that Oxygen, The 100 and Tomorrow People are competing for 2 slots, 1 to follow Supernatural and 1 to follow Arrow. If all 3 turn out good pilots then I suspect one will be held on the shelf with a reduced episode order to replace a new show that bombs (IF that happens).
I think Beauty & the Beast will be moving to Friday nights to air with a shortened season of Nikita. Since Nikita is rumoured to only have 6 or so episodes in their final season, it’s likely a new show will air after its conclusion sometime in late fall, possibly The Selection or Reign.
In conclusion, out of the 7 remaining pilots left in the run for a timeslot, I predict 6 will be ordered to series with 1 show the odd man out.
