Aaron Schwartz, a computer whiz and Stanford dropout who founded a company that merged with social news website Reddit as well as an activist who opposed government regulation of the Internet, was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment. A spokeswoman for New York’s Medical Examiner said26-year-old Swartz hanged himself. He was found Friday. Swartz’s death was confirmed by his attorney, Elliot Peters, in an email to MIT’s The Tech newspaper. Swartz was a prodigy who as a young teenager helped create the initial programming code for the RSS news feeds used to gather updates from blogs, news headlines, audio and video for computer users. He also directed the anti-censorship political action group Demand Progress and fought to keep online access to content free. Arrested in 2011 and charged with stealing scientific journals from an archive at MIT, he had pleaded not guilty to charges including wire fraud and was scheduled to stand trial in federal court next month. If convicted he could have faced a prison term of 50 years or more and up to $4 million in fines. Supporters noted that the MIT archive did not press charges and the documents were returned. Author and online activist Cory Doctorow suggested “The fact that the U.S. legal apparatus decided he belonged behind bars for downloading scholarly articles without permission is as neat an indictment of our age — and validation of his struggle — as you could ask for.” (Photo by Fred Benenson / Flickr)

Very sad news.
I understand that this is an industry website, so the skew of “opposed government regulation of the internet” is understandable, but, the so called “government regulation” that Aaron opposed would have dealt a death blow to one of humanities greatest accomplishments and contributions to the cause of democracy, freedom and free speech across the globe, The Internet.
Democracy, free speech, and freedom in general must never be subsumed or made subsidiary to commerce and economic consideration.
Aaron, you are already sorely missed, and your commitment to your principles of free speech and freedom of information will inspire generations to come.
Terrible.
What a tragedy. The candle that burns twice as bright only lives half as long.
Big Business really wanted this guy neutralized and they did him in.
If you think they bad guys haven’t won in US you aren’t paying attention.
What a sad loss..RIP
although i sympathize with his cause, and wish him a blessed RIP, he put so much pressure on himself by “attaching a laptop to MIT’s computer network, which allowed him to ‘rapidly download an extraordinary volume of articles from JSTOR’ ” . I mean people, definitely push for free access to academic research for fellow researchers or even for curiosity’s sake but this simply is not the way to go about it.
Whether we like it or not, someone has spent resources in compiling this data.
….yet JSTOR has started opening up their database, so its a shame that he took himself out of the equation to figure a way to do this where all the players get what they want out of it.
kids his age are shooting up former teachers in schools and complete strangers in theaters for no reason. at least his aim was peaceful and he didn’t physically harm anyone. what a worthless lawsuit. my prayers are with his family.
Yeah — he should’ve just been entitled to whatever he wanted. What’s wrong with entitlement?
Entitlement does not mean you’re entitled to stealing secret information from anyone you please! Privacy is a right too and entitlements are created by marxist ideology. You obviously know little about true freedom. I wouldn’t want the gov’t hacking into my computer not that I have anything to hide, but it’s not HIS information to take. Shame on you for thinking anyone has rights over other peoples’ property! Perhaps you should move to Cuba and see what it’s like there? Please, do us all a huge favor
Shame on prosecuter Carmen Ortiz for charging this young man who cared deeply about rights and freedom on the Internet with 50 years of crimes as though he were some terrorist or mafia hacker. Ms. Ortiz has proven she lacks the discretion and sense of justice necessary to represent the government of the United States. Shame on her. And shame on all of us.
50 years for stealing something that was free sounds a bit excessive. MIT didn’t press charges so what’s the government’s beef? Seriously?
