EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that MTV‘s new president of programming Susanne Daniels has made her first major executive hire, tapping ABC Family’s VP Development and Programming Mina Lefevre as SVP and new head of scripted programming. The cable network’s current head of scripted, SVP Justin Levy, is expected to report to Lefevre. MTV had no comment. When Daniels was named president of programming of MTV in November, there was a lot of speculation whether she would bring in top executives from outside, especially people she had worked with at the WB or Lifetime. A day after Daniels’ announcement, MTV’s co-head of scripted programming, SVP Clay Spencer, was let go, leaving Levy as the solo head of scripted. Spencer had been brought in by Daniels’ predecessor David Janollari, while Levy is a homegrown MTV talent, having been at the cable network for over four years, steadily rising through the ranks. He championed the network’s breakout comedy Awkward and also has payed an integral part in the development and production of the other successful MTV series, Teen Wolf. He is now overseeing Hot Mess, the new pilot from Awkward creator/executive producer Lauren Iungerich.
Bringing in an executive from ABC Family signals a continuing focus on millennials for MTV, which has been struggling in the ratings as Jersey Shore lost its juggernaut status. At ABC Family, where Lefevre has been for 12 years, she has overseen all creative and production aspects of scripted original series, including dramas Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game and comedy Melissa & Joey. Lefevre is currently shepherding two of the network’s drama pilots, The Fosters and Socio. She also oversees ABC Family’s original movie slate.

I do not know Suzanne, but if this is the kind of move she makes then maybe at last MTV can make something work and stick. Mina is spectacular and has been an unsung hero for way too long ABC Family. This is a great move for her and for her new network. And it is good news for the town. Way to go, Mina.
“at last MTV can make something work and stick”….um,, AWKWARD got ordered for a 3rd season for stellar ratings and has had more critical acclaim than anything ever on ABC Fam. it clearly works and stuck. Not to mention, is a great show. And Justin championed that show from day one. Mina may be a wonderful exec but Justin is MTV’s unsung hero.
Ditto on this – AWKWARD is a great show and Justin was always for it. He has been a tireless worker over there.
As someone who’s developed with Mina, this is a great hire. She has good instincts and knows how to get the most out of writers.
Finally! Good by sorority mentality and hello spotlight. High five to a great executive who is smart and kind and rock solid with writers and producers.
Mina rocks! Great choice, MTV. Have worked with her and her notes are stellar and spot on. Look forward to working with her in the future.
Dorothy Rocks!
Well done, Mina! Amid a great team, she’s a real superstar.
As someone who just developed and produced a pilot for Mina, I can say without a doubt, that she is the VERY BEST executive in town. Hands down.
A big gain for MTV. And she leaves behind quite the legacy at ABC Fam. Everyone is so happy for you, Mina! Congrats.
As someone who’s never met nor heard of Mina and therefore has no opportunity of snagging work from her through unctuous flattery, side-eye winking hints referring to past collaborations, or unnecessary Britishisms (but does know the difference between goodbye and ‘good by’), all I can add is, good luck everyone with everything forever!
Mina is wonderful – kudos to her.
This just in: Justin Levy is desperately looking for the tallest building in LA.
One potential problem is that Mina has really good taste in projects and Justin Levy has really bad taste in projects. Not sure I see that meshing very well…
Granted, RJ BERGER was one of the worst shows in the history of all badness ever, but TEEN WOLF and AWKWARD are actually great. That’s a great legacy for an exec.
This news depresses the shit out of me. The execs that are left at ABCF are as political as they come and rarely (if ever) go to bat for their writers like Mina does. Mina’s a class act.
Suzanne Daniels is an amazing executive … You should Google her and so your research. I worked for her at the WB and I was sad when she left, but she left to do bigger and bettter things. She is experienced, intelligent and passionate! Good Luck MTV! You have the best of the best!! N
Congrats Mina. Nothing says that you are good at what you do — in addition to being a decent person and boss — than the dearth of snark and surfeit of praise on this thread, a celebration of your promotion. Continued success to you.
MTV has a scripted division?
Headed by Justin Levy? What a joke that guy is. When are they dumping their worthless reality execs?
If Lauren says casting step run in the other direction. She gave us the run around for months. And as a bonus you will get notes from her nasty assistant Sarah. Priceless. What a motley crew they have over there.
Justin Levy is hands down one of the best execs I’ve worked with. I know the creators that he oversees at the net love him. I know this because… I am one of them. He’s passionate, smart and incredibly supportive of artists. Mina will love him. He’s a great guy.
I worked with Mina years ago as a fellow exec – and she’s super smart and extremely goodhearted. Couldn’t happen to a better person! Go Mina!!
Mina you are going to bring a level of class they haven’t had there in years. Wish you were overseeing reality too. Suzanne made a wonderful choice hope she is going to make more changes in Los Angeles.
Mtv has finally made a move that makes sense. Huge congrats to mina, looking forward to some quality programming!
Awkward is a show that ANY network should be proud of. Luckily MTV got it right in all aspects of the creative process..marketing..promotion. MTV is an edgy network that could actually push the boundaries when creating scripted content for the network.
This is the best way to get publish Head Scripted Programming in public with the help of MTV.
