After swiftly scrapping planned summer drama series Weird Desk last month, ABC has picked up another original drama for next summer, Canadian import Motive, from former Dexter and The Mentalist exec producer Daniel Cerone. The 13-episode CTV series focuses not on who did the crime, but why the crime was committed in the first place. The killer and victim are identified at the beginning of each episode, with the crime then explored via stylized flashbacks which piece together the connection between the two characters and what drove the killer to commit murder. In Canada, the series will premiere in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot this Sunday. Motive stars Kristin Lehman (The Killing), Louis Ferreira (Rookie Blue), Lauren Holly (NCIS), Roger Cross (Arrow), Brendan Penny and Cameron Bright. The series was created by Cerone who executive produces with Louise Clark, Rob Merilees, Erin Haskett, Rob LaBelle, Lindsay Macadam and James Thorpe. Developed by CTV, the series is produced by Foundation Features and Lark Productions in association with Bell Media and distributed by NBCUniversal International. ABC has had success with another Canadian crime drama, Rookie Blue, which returns to the network next summer for a fourth season. ABC also has soap Mistresses on tap for the off-season.

Hi Nikki, have you hears any buzz on the Canadian series Primeval?
Ed
Gotta say…i saw the pilot, and was really impressed.
It had the great procedural element, without the card board cut out,
characters, and story lines like most the ones we’ve been seeing lately..

Network executives would be smart to pick up more programming like this. It’s cheap and the possibility of becoming a hit is quite great as there is little competition in the summer. One network should pick up the British comedy Miranda, which is funnier than anything on American TV.
Oh, Good God! Miranda is horrible. Far too dumb for an American audience, and that is saying something. Very tall woman falls down a lot. That’s the show.
It’s weird to hear about Americans taking OUR sloppy seconds for a change. What they fail to realize is that significant amount of their TV is already imported from Canada.
Wait, you mean to tell me ABC will not air “The Bachelor Pad” or some other insipid reality nonsense? I’m shocked. I’ll give the show a chance, although my very early thoughts on the current ABC commercials – the main character, her ego is a tad over the top and a turn off. Just the vibe I had, but I could be wrong. As for importing shows from Canada..hey I’m all for it. I was into the Canadian show “Flashpoint” based out of Toronto, CBS cancelled it and it moved to a cable channel called ION. American TV in general has been a slew of imports though, mainly the reality, singing, dancing shows.
The problem with American networks are the over-hyped shows, they fall flat on their face within weeks. This time last year “Last Resort” was being promoted for Sept ’12, that failed. “Zero Hour” – again so much hype, yet cancelled after 3 episodes. THEN you have a buch of has been “stars” jumping off a diving board into a pool. This somehow is still on TV. It is so incredibly bad that its comical. THIS – if the bigwigs at ABC have a braincell, they will not bring this back. Then again, I thought the same thing with “Wipeout,” Funny at first, but after 3+ seasons…it’s old!
