ABC made a late charge on the pilot pickup front to end what will likely be the busiest day this season. (For full list of all broadcast pilots, click here.) The network has given the green light to comedy Pulling, from Bad Teachers scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky and producer Aaron Kaplan. On the drama side, picked up are dramas Betrayal from David Zabel; Venice from McG and Byron Balasco, with McG set to direct; and The Returned, from writer Aaron Zelman, Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Single-camera comedy Pulling is based on the praised 2006 British series. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky wrote the adaptation, produced by ABC Studios and Kapital Entertainment. Sharon Horgan and Dennis Kelly, creators of the original series, executive produce with Eisenberg, Stupnitsky and Kaplan. Pulling revolves around three dysfunctional women in their 30s living their lives the way they want, even if society tells them they should have it all figured out by this point. This marks the second pilot order for Kaplan today, joining CBS’ Dana Klein comedy, and third so far this season, along with NBC’s The Gates.
With Red Widow about to premiere next month, ABC is betting on another drama project based on a Dutch format. Written by ER showrunner Zabel, Betrayal is a serialized drama based on the 2011 Dutch series Overspel, produced by and runs on Netherlands’ public broadcaster Vara. It centers on a beautiful but unhappily married female photographer who begins a torrid affair with a lawyer for a powerful family. When he turns out to be defending a murder suspect who is being prosecuted by her husband, the relationship and the case begin a spiraling series of betrayals with cataclysmic results for everyone involved. Zabel is executive producing Betrayal with Scripted World’s Rob Golenberg and Alon Aranya who are also behind Red Widow. ABC Studios is producing. This marks the second pilot order for Aranya who also co-executive produces the CBS drama pilot Hostages starring Toni Collette.
Venice, which echoes the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, revolves around the haves and have-nots of one of California’s most seductive cities, Venice. It focuses on two rival families and a forbidden and dangerous romance emerging between them as the two families battle for control of Venice. McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision is producing with Warner Bros. Television where the company is based. McG and Balasco are executive producing with Wonderland’s Peter Johnson.
The Returned is a serialized drama produced by Plan B, Brillstein and ABC Studios. Written by Aaron Zelman (AMC’s The Killing), The Returned is based on the debut novel by Jason Mott, which is slated to be published next September by Mira Books. The rights to the book sparked a bidding war among several production companies and studios. Brillstein and Plan B were able to land the property in their first teaming together, and the project was taken to ABC Studios where Brillstein is based. The drama explores what happens when the people you have mourned and buried suddenly appear on your doorstep as if not a day’s gone by? The lives of the people of Aurora are forever changed when their deceased loved ones, RETURN. Executive producing alongside Zelman are JoAnn Alfano and Jon Liebman from BEP and Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B.

I hope all their new shows fain and their old show except for once upon a time and scandal… Sense they gave their best new show a death sentence before it premiered
Venice has NO PICK UP written all over it… christalmighty… Sounds worse than that awful FOX show a few years back, Skins… and honestly, what are the families gonna fight over? Weed dispensaries? Maybe take it OUT of LA? Oh wait, thats Dallas. Ok, screw it, call it San Bernardino. MUCH more entertaining (I guess).
The lives of the people of AURORA? Are you serious? This is the name they chose for the city? I’m sorry, I’m not easily offended or anything but that’s beyond ridiculous.
Calm down a bit, it’s based on a book, an existing work of fiction. Should we change the name of Aurora Borealis too just in case any eskimos get offended?
Dear Deadline staff, once the antics all die down and the dust settles I’d be very interested to see the breakdown of shows being picked up to pilot that are based on an existing franchise, either foreign or web based or simply being remade, as opposed to shows that are original titles. Sometimes it seems like every second show I read about is based on something out of the Netherlands, and every third show I read about is based on The Bridge, which I swear has three different adaptations in the works around the world.
It seems like someone sells and makes a version of the Returned every pilot season. Good on these folks for thei turn at bat.
Wow…the returned sounds a lot like the french movie Les Revenants…which literally translates to “the ones who return”. Which is about…the dead returning to their lives one day. So…is the novel based on this movie or just plagiarizing it?
That movie was known stateside as They Came Back. Imdb synopsis:
“The lives of the residents of a small French town are changed when thousands of the recently dead inexplicably come back to life and try to integrate themselves into society that has changed for them.”
Looks like there’s a series version of “Les Revenants” that aired last year (2012). I found some and am going to take a look at them to see how it was handled there, with the probable but unintentional bonus disappointment at the US version when I see it.
Not only that but Les Revenants has been turned into a very successful 8 part series for Canal Plus in France. It’s getting its British remake next year. With exactly the same premise.
Sounds really weird and all so British. What is the deal with mcG?
I wonder if they will change the name of the city – Aurora. Might be too soon.
Venice is a dump. If they want to shoot in a seductive city with character, try New Orleans. Or Brooklyn.
Geewhiz…haven’t you heard of Silicon Beach? Its considered the epicenter of design & creativity in America and if you haven’t figured it out yet it’d be Venice Beach & Santa Monica….Google, Frank Gehry, and apparently WB have heard of it, and they are clearly more informed than you are.
Brooklyn or New Orleans seductive? You have got to be joking….maybe if you still live in the 1980′s and enjoy crack. Do a little research next time before you make such a ridiculous statement.
Are you joking, Venice California can’t hold a candle to New Orleans, even after Katrina!
Your view of Brooklyn is very dated.
so does that mean, there’s no chance for the ‘Wunderland’ pilot by McG?
since he’s going to work for ABC!
Wunderland still has a chance. Mcg’s only going to ‘work for ABC’ with this pilot as a director/EP. Production deals are separate from ‘directed by’ deals. So his production company, partnered with WBTV, can sell pilots with any network/outlet WBTV has a deal with. Therefore, Wonderland is still very much alive.
whoop since ‘Wunderland’ is for the ‘CW’
No you get it!! We’ll make a Shakespeare Rip-off, but since we need it to be fresh we’ll still set it in Venice but It’s Venice, California instead of Venice, Italy…and then everyone circle jerks
… Romeo and Juliet was Verona, Italy. Maybe next time.
Super exicted for Pulling. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky wrote some stellar office episodes. They obviously have a knack for reorienting British humour.
I thought Sharon Horgan was writing the Pulling pilot? Color me disappointed.
This Fall on ABC: Revenge & Betrayal!
The Returned sounds very much like that CBS pilot (Babylon Fields) from 5 years ago…
Really, MEN are writing the remake of PULLING? Once again, Hollywood gets this wrong. The British PULLING is my favorite shows of all times, not sure how we can “recreate” in on American TV anyway, because the original is X rated dirty. I urge everyone to rent the original on Netflix. It’s both hysterical and heartbreaking.
The two drama’s Betrayal and Red Widow sound like they could be some promise in those drama’s both for ABC which needs more story driven types of shows. With the success of Revenge and Scandal. ABC’s network seems to be making some interesting decisions. As for the other shows they are far from being interesting like for instance Venice and The Returned just sound like there are maybe to far out there to be possible hit’s. At the same it’s going to be a busy season for the networks.
