Four years after Disney bought Marvel, ABC appears poised to launch its first Marvel series. Mining Marvel’s universe for primetime has been a priority for ABC and Marvel Television. Their Avengers-themed effort, pilot Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D, from The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, became the first to go to pilot and, unless some calamity occurs, seems destined to go to series. “How wonderful is it,” ABC topper Paul Lee said at TCA today. “My boss Bob Iger buys Marvel… Now we’re not just able to use the Marvel brand but the Avengers franchise for a show.”
Corporate synergy certainly plays a factor in S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s prospects. “We haven’t yet seen the pilot but we’re very hopeful that it would go to series,” Lee said during the ABC executive session. “I don’t want to jinx it we’re very excited about it.” After the session he revealed that Whedon “is already working on (extra) scripts for the series.” S.H.I.E.L.D. is envisioned as a long-time player. “We’d love to see S.H.I.E.L.D. go not just from pilot to series but to last a long time,” Lee said. He said that Whedon “is very engaged” with the project and “is enjoying” returning to television.”

Based on the pilot’s script, penned by Whedon, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, Lee called S.H.I.E.L.D. “smart with heart” and “very Joss.” Lee wasn’t concerned that the project’s comic book genesis, which is inherently male-skewing, would make the show a difficult sale to the predominantly female ABC audiences the way Shawn Ryan’s Last Resort proved this fall. “Marvel has the ability to bring out the whole family,” Lee said. Because of that, in terms of potential scheduling, “there’s no question S.H.I.E.L.D. could go at 8, it could go on Sunday,” he said. “But it could go at 9 or 10 too.”
It will likely be the first but definitely not the last Marvel series on ABC. “We’re developing a lot of Marvel shows,” Lee said. “Marvel is just huge for us as an opportunity. We did it with Once Upon A Time, and we’re doing it with S.H.I.E.L.D., doing shows that can really help the wider Walt Disney Company.

Did no one ask him about Guillermo del Toro’s Hulk series? Is that dead or not?
If Hulk is going for fall of 2013 we should hear about it being greenlit about now or the coming weeks.
And corporate synergy is also why WEIRD DESK got canned.
Toro’s Hulk series is dead, I think Marvel is more interested in making a Planet Hulk movie with Ruffalo, which would be far more interesting then another Hulk TV show and in the far more profitable. If Marvel is looking for TV show there are alot more economically safe ventures such as a show about Daredevil or Heroes for Hire.
Agreed on DD, after all, he’s a LAWYER. Law by day, tights at night.
No one has asked about the other elephant in the room, the rumored STAR WARS series???!?!!
You mean the live action series that has been rumored for eons? Now that Disney is in charge, they will probably throw their weight behind more kid-focused animated series like The Clone Wars, which has been a ratings success. Just keep the story going after the current series (5 seasons) is scheduled to end.
But a live action series would be a much bigger risk. I wouldn’t bet that the Star Wars name can keep a large enough adult audience enthralled to pay the considerable budget that a show like that would require. There’s a reason live action space adventure (Star Trek et al) has vanished from TV.
PS, adults can watch and enjoy The Clone Wars too but it’s definitely geared towards the under-12 crowd.
Daredevil would be LAW AND ORDER meets SUPERHEROES!!! AWESOME!
Really looking forward to S.H.I.E.L.D..but hopefully ABC won’t schedule it Thursday at 8pm. I’m thinking 9 or 10 along with OUAT and Revenge.
People forget ABC’s long-time success — five seasons — with JJ Abram’s ‘Alias’, of which I see ‘SHIELD’ being most akin to.
I agree that Sunday night would be great scheduling as it would be filled with strong multi-season genre lead-ins. I’d sa lead-in with ‘OUAT’ and lead-our w/’Revenge’ , just to be safe.
But yeah, ABC needs to get out of îts female-audience boxand this show should be the high-concept yet proven brand-name to do just that…
The New Hulk TV series coming this year is not dead at all.
I believe they still looking for a writer for The Incredible Hulk TV series coming this year in 2013 or next year in 2014.And Liz stop saying its dead because it’s not.
I will say that the Hulk TV series coming in 2013 will not happen until September after the announcement on TV ABC.
