We at Deadline toil all day to inform, entertain and occasionally turn a good phrase, but the stabs at creativity don’t stop with us. Our commenters can be a hard bunch, but some of them come up with some good lines that amuse us to no end. On the tail of today’s story about a new Ben-Hur at MGM, the commenter JJ didn’t seem as enthusiastic as the studio, and offered what he considered a better idea: “I’d rather see Adam Sandler in ‘Ben-Him/Ben-Hur.’
That’s the best one I’ve seen since I broke a story that Open Road would release the Ashton Kutcher-starrer jOBS, about Apple visionary Steve Jobs. Seconds later, thetruth opined: “An idiot playing a genius. Perfect.” That was pretty good, but the comment that made me laugh hardest since I’ve been at Deadline was one that came not only at my expense, but the legendary lady who brought me over here. I wrote a catty piece about a lawsuit between the director of The Human Centipede and the film’s original star. It was a development I said I hoped would doom their proposed re-team on a third installment of that vile horror franchise. One commenter took exception, ending his critique of me with the line: “What I wouldn’t give to see Mike and Nikki sewn ass to mouth.” A little harsh, but it made us both laugh.

Unfortunately, “Ben-Him/Ben-Hur” was a “Family Guy” joke from a couple of weeks back.
THAT’S where I remember hearing it from. Thank you.
Sorry to inform you, but that line about Adam Sandler playing Ben Him/Ben Hur was a cutaway gag in last week’s Family Guy. Whoever posted that was just quoting Family Guy.
The Adam Sandler “Ben-Him/Ben-Hur” comment is a reference to a Family Guy cutaway gag from the December 23rd episode. The commenter was just ripping off of it.
Dear Peter Griffin, FGW and Chad (aka: Seth),
Okay…We get it. Your show made the original joke.
At least make an attempt to space comments further apart and use different wording next time.
Thanks!
‘Dear Seth,’ don’t assume those comments were made by MacFarlane. I actually clicked on the comments section just to write the same thing they did.
At least those comments were trying to be helpful and inform readers/Mike. They probably look similar because they were being typed up at the same time. What was your comment trying to accomplish?
Apologies: “farther apart.”
“JJ” got that from Family Guy’s recent nativity episode, so you should thank Seth MacFarlane and co. instead.
In reference to the last comment you found amusing, the obvious question is “whose ass to whose mouth”?
You know the Sandler Ben Him/ Ben Her joke is from Family Guy and not the commenter, right? It’s from the Christmas episode this year, which was written by Tom Devanney:

OK COOL GOOD STORY
Cool story, bro.
Old jokes don’t die. They get recycled. I first heard it as the new Disney movie with Mickey playing him and Minnie as her. The year was 1962.
The dumbest thing about “jOBS” isn’t Kutcher it’s the way it’s spelled.
Anyway, the article is neat, and I laugh from either Mike, Nikki or the commenters at least once a day. My current favorite is the thread regarding Samuel L. Jackson’s Oscar jibes. By the way, Sam wasn’t in attendance at the Django Golden Globes table!
I don’t think it matters where the joke originated, I like that Mr. Fleming has posted an article detailing his enjoyment of the comments. It should serve as an encouragement for everyone to keep posting comments – the authors are reading (and enjoying the interaction with their readers).
This.
