The terminally ill Star Trek fan who got his wish to see the latest movie before its May release has died. New York’s Subway Cinema reported on its Facebook page that Daniel Craft died Friday night of complications from cancer. Previously identified only by his first name, Craft, who was 42, was a longtime supporter of Subway Cinema and the New York Asian Film Festival. Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams learned of Craft’s dying wish via Reddit and Twitter and arranged for Craft and his wife to see an early cut of the movie.

RIP moviegoer
Boldly Go….Daniel Craft.
Wonderful heartwarming story.
I am so glad he got to see the film…and am so sorry for his families loss….please take care and thank you J.J. Abrams for allowing him to see it…peace and hugs from CA
Ad Astra, Mr Craft.
There has been some negative comments about Abram’s motivation for allowing Mr Craft to see the movie early. At this point, all I can say is, I respect Mr Abrams for giving this man his last, dying wish, no matter what his reasoning. My condolences to his family and friends. So glad he got to see the movie before passing on “to the stars” Godspeed, Mr Craft. Warp factor 4.
I held a seance, and can now confirm that Cumberbatch IS Khan (sorry, couldn’t resist a little gallows humor). RIP
Witless Fred-head, if it were only humorous…
Not funny at all, sorry.
Was totally funny, stop being such phony humanitarians.
God Bless Craft and bless you JJ Abrams.
In an age of unbridled cynicism, this story — of a dying ‘Star Trek’ fan and the gift of an early screening provided by JJ Abrams — restores my faith a bit. It shows that good people can do good things …just because. so thanks for being a mensch JJ and thanks, too, to deadline.com for reporting this story. my sincere condolences to the family and friends of daniel craft. RIP
So sorry for that family and their loss. God bless them and JJAbrams, You Sir, are a real hero. Looking forward to seeing Star Trek: Into The Darkness.
Condolences to the Craft family.
Thank you, J.J…for beaming Daniel up.
RIP
I’m so sorry he perished from cancer but glad his wish did get granted and he got to see the new Star Trek film and shows there are still good decent people in this world.
It’s so wonderful that he got to see it. As a lifelong Star Trek fan, that would have been my last wish, too. It was such a nice thing for J.J. Abrams to do. Condolences to his family.
Very sad story, but it warms my heart to see the gesture by JJ Abrams. Can we please stop the cynicism and the sniping about motive, mourn a man who died far too soon, and a movie director who showed a touch of class. Thank you, Mr. Abrams.
I’m perfectly healthy but I could die tomorrow. I think I should be allowed to see the movie right away what if there’s a giant earthquake and California is destroyed like in the movie 2012 then a lot of movie tickets will go unsold. They should move the release date up to January 25th just in case you never know what might go wrong there could be a giant doomsday machine moving through our solar system destroying entire planets which was the episode I starred in and died in.
You can make a joke about a man dying and how it coud relate back to you. What a clever guy.
You are despicable to mock and compare your desires with those of a man dying from cancer.
I’m perfectly healthy but I could die tomorrow.
We wouldnt be so lucky
This is why we are alive people. If you have the power to make somebody happy, just do it dammit.
Well said!
J.J Abrams is a true class act. Rest well Daniel.
A toast to his dedication
Thank you JJ Abrams for being so kind as to let him have that opportunity. Actions like this restore my faith in humanity.
And Daniel: Warp factor 9….second star to the right and straight on ’til morning…….rest in peace.
You know, part of me is really upset I won’t get to hear what he thought of the movie.
I hope wherever he is, it’s boldy where no man has gone before.
it is sad whenever anyone suffers from a loss. it is shameful when the entertainment industry tries to profit from it in order to counter the pre-word of mouth on what is sure to be a dreadful movie.
Dear Dudette: What “word of mouth” are you privy to? Have you seen the film in a rough cut? The only indication about any pre-buzz online I could find about STID was a 99% favorable rating of people wanting to see it on Rotten Tomatoes. You have an opinion but have not stated any facts to back up said opinion. Here is a fact: regardless of whatever motivation Abrams may have had, a dying man got his last wish. That trumps any conjecture you may cook up in your sad, little mind.

A simple act of kindness that likely meant the world to this man. Well done, Mr Abrams!
So freaking sad.. I hope he was able to enjoy his last months. :/
Props to Abrams.
That’s too bad. May he rest in peace & all the best to his family.
RIP Daniel you got your dying wish. Thoughts with his family and friends. Total respect for J.J Abrams in granting a dying mans wish……
Beautiful story. We can use more stories like this. RIP Daniel.
Brought tears to my eyes reading this.
Kudos to everybody who made it happen for this guy.
Thank God he didnt ask to see Star Trek 5.
