UPDATE, 4 PM: Current TV CEO Joel Hyatt just confirmed the sale in a memo to staffers. “Getting this transaction done was very difficult,” he writes. (Read the network’s official statement after the original break of the story.) Since Time Warner Cable would not consent to the sale “Current will no longer be carried on TWC. This is unfortunate, but I am confident that Al Jazeera America will earn significant additional carriage in the months and years ahead.” Time Warner Cable says that it is “removing the service as quickly as possible.” The loss of the No. 2 cable operator will hurt: Time Warner Cable has 12.2M video subscribers and Current reaches about 59M homes. Others also could follow Time Warner Cable’s lead as they look to prune their often bloated channel lineups. Al Jazeera has fought an uphill battle to win carriage on U.S. cable systems. Operators say it’s too expensive, and that there’s too little interest in the subjects it covers. Fans of the channel say it’s due to unreasonable fears that Al Jazeera’s content will be too controversial and possibly propagandistic. Al Jazeera fought back, and further infuriated cable execs, by live-streaming its English-language programming.
Hyatt didn’t disclose financial terms but says that “Al Jazeera is planning to invest significantly in building ‘Al Jazeera America,’ a network focused on international news for the American audience.” Hyatt and co-founder Al Gore “will both serve on the Advisory Board of Al Jazeera America, and we look forward to helping build an important news network.” Hyatt notes that Al Jazeera “does not have a management team in place in the U.S to run this new venture.” But he and Gore picked the Qatar-based service among “several suitors who were interested in acquiring Current” because the news operation shares its goals “To give voice to those whose voices are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the important stories that no one else is telling.”
PREVIOUS, 2:29 PM: Current TV said in the fall that it was considering putting itself up for sale, and now comes word that the cable channel founded by former Vice President Al Gore may have found a buyer. Al Jazeera is finalizing a deal to acquire Current TV, The New York Times reports, bringing the Pan-Arab news giant in closer competition with CNN and other U.S. news networks. The Times, citing people with knowledge of the deal negotiations, says Al Jazeera would create a new channel based in New York, rather that simply use Current to distribute its English-language channel, Al Jazeera English. There was no immediate word about the sale price. Current makes an attractive target because it’s available in about 60 million homes in the U.S. and 70 million worldwide, according to its website. In addition to Gore and company CEO Joel Hyatt, its owners include Comcast, DirecTV and venture capital firms.
“We are proud and pleased that Al Jazeera, the award-winning international news organization, has bought Current TV,” said Al Gore, co-founder and Chairman, and Joel Hyatt, co-founder and CEO. “Since its founding in 2005, Current has grown into a national network available in nearly 60 million homes, offering thought-provoking commentary and Emmy and Peabody award-winning programming. Current Media was built based on a few key goals: To give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling. Al Jazeera, like Current, believes that facts and truth lead to a better understanding of the world around us.”

Rarely watched Current before, but will now avoid it like the Ebola virus.
sorry sorry
Heaven forbid that you should encounter ideas outside your favorite echo chamber.
..Ah yes someone else’s echo chamber is so refreshing…this sgould add a good 648 viewers..
Hmmm…do you ever encounter ideas outside your echo chamber? I doubt it.
Also, Dave Marash, the lead anchor of the channel, quit over what he felt was an anti-American bias.
it’s not that it’s the fact that Al Jazeera is extremely bias. They may report without bias when it comes to Arab countries nd their Issues but they definitely prejudiced when it comes to issues dealing with anything outside their own Arab countries. Not just being bias against Israel, but the Middle East, the UK and France.
So did everyone else in America, based on Current’s viewing figures. It was a huge flop. Not even the far lefties tuned in to see it.
Sorry, I am sorry you are an idiot. Why not turn on the network for ten minutes during the hourly news broadcast? You will learn more about the world than you could learn watching Fox News non-stop for a year.
Al Jazerra turns out to be one of the best news reporting outlets around. AND they are online, which is far more generous (and wise) than any of the three American networks.
Wow. Lots of people in their OWN echo chambers, hearing the thoughts in their head. I don’t watch FOX, as it is insane bullshit. CNN has been rapidly declining and MSNBC tries so hard to be counter-FOX programming, it comes off as smug and shrill. I listen to NPR News and BBC News. Plenty of international news. If you think Rupert Murdoch owning large media outlets is a bad idea, then let’s avoid Al Jazerra. If you think that part of the world is so awesome, travel there and shout “I’m an American!” You will be taken to a hospitality suite!
bull…Al Jazeera and their reporters hate America with a passion
Yes, I never see FOX or CNN put articles online like Al Jazeera does. What were you saying again about leaving your echo chamber?
Just watch RED EYE! That’s all you need!
Exactly! How many other shows on ANY network have an ombudsman. Let alone one of the caliber of TV’s Andy Levy. Gutfeld generally cuts away the crap and gets to the heart of the subject. Awesome show.
Only a matter of time until there’s manufactured controversy from the Israel lobby and people who have never watched Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera is probably the most fair and balanced news source in the world. I welcome this…
Agreed. And for those who will condemn this without thought…think of the crap that Current TV has provided over the recent years. This will be a major improvement.
Agreed, many people here the name and think “Islamists” automatically. Its a shame.
Then why did lead anchor Dave Marash quit over what he felt was an anti-American bias?
Because he felt, wrongly, that there was an anti-American bias. Wow – that was too easy!
I started watching Al Jazeera on-line a few years ago, originally because I was curious about the programming and expected to see a very biased agenda. What motivated me to continue to return to the site was how unbiased the news reporting was; which was something I didn’t expect (even the ‘special story series’ are; for the most part, very factually based). If many folks who are critical of the network would actually spend some time watching; they might recognize something I’ve increasingly missed in American journalism over the past 20 plus years; a news report that deals with the simple facts and allows you to form your own opinions. Maybe I’ve missed times when the coverage has been otherwise, but from what I’ve seen; there’s much less ‘propaganda’ and ‘preaching to the choir’ (for lack of better terms) than I’ve experienced with either Fox News, or MSNBC. Maybe we’ve become a society that wants the media to ‘make up our minds for us’; but I would rather have the opportunity to be presented with facts and use what little intelligence I have to form my own thoughts and opinions.
Current TV may, and I stress may, be ‘available’ in 60 million homes, but it is only watched in two of them. Not 2 million. 2 in total.
I must agree. I didn’t watch it when it was on Time Warner Cable. I won’t miss it. Good luck to the new owner and it will be interested to see how the new owner will get Time Warner Cable to change it mind. Good luck in 2013.
I agree. I’m a die-hard liberal but I thought Current was beyond boring.
At last… a real cable new outlet for the US!
Praise Allah
They may rehire Keith Olbermann.
Or Pierce Morgan after he self deports.
As a Bright House subscriber (which is basically a subsidiary of Time Warner), I am not at all pleased that I won’t be getting access to AJ America. I “discovered” Al-Jazeera English’s online feed during the whole “Arab Spring” thing, and quickly grew to appreciate their unbiased, thoughtful, and fair approach to the news. So of course I won’t be given the option to watch their new American network. Sigh.
And anybody who would dismiss them outright because they have an Arabic name and are based in Qatar may need to ask themselves why that bothers them so much.
look for them NOT to advertise the new owner….wow, i think America needs the equivalent of a Red Scare of Islam.
Everyone will know about the ownership and considering that their main obstacle will be obscurity, that will work in their favor. People may seek them out just to see The Islamofacist Network. You KNOW Fox will give them tons of free publicity as they squawk about them.
As for their being owned by Qatar, i don’t care if they’re owned by Switzerland. government ownership of media instantly raises my hackles. But cable in general is quickly becoming moot as a news source anyway. If al Jazeera wants to reach Americans, they should try YouTube.
most of al j’s english gang are from the BBC. and they’re into real journalism. so “honey boo boo” interviews and an hour-long special on the a-symmetry of kim kardashian’s breasts are probably not going to happen.
I actually turned on Current during election night coverage just to hear Al’s perspective… but the video signal was so god awful I couldn’t watch for more than 2 minutes. It was like they were broadcasting from a bomb shelter. That plus the coverage was REALLY bad. Like a college TV station. Truly embarrassing. I’m sure Joel and Al are rejoicing to Allah that they actually got a buyer and didn’t care who they sold to.
So TWC won’t carry Al Jazeera because it is “possibly propagandistic” yet they carry Fox News and Fox Business? Thanks for proving how much of a right-wing idiot you are Time Warner.
It’s also clear that they never even WATCHED AJ because it’s anything but controversial and propagandistic – just goes to show you that they bought into that garbage that the GOP has used to demonise anyone who isn’t Fox News.
Geez, another Fox News hate rant from another Kool-Aid drinker.
Go back to sleep – please.
Geez another Fox News defender rant from another Kool-Aid drinker.
I would say go back to sleep but, as a Fox News fan, you’ve obviously been asleep since the 50′s.
Current TV was already on TWC’s short list for channels to be dumped – any sale of the channel provides them the easy ability to do so prior to the contract termination.
Todd has never watched Fox and yet he can comment so fully on what it is and what it is not. Meanwhile, in the real world people ask “who is Todd?”.
I agree
As if Current didn’t have enough programs. This is a killer. Current was one of the channels DirecTV eliminated when it created the cheaper entertainment package. If All Jazeerav wants to break into the us with an international news channel, it needs to change its name. Sadly, Americans don’t care@what’s happening elsewhere.. If they did, air BBCNews International or CNN international
I suppose this sale means the end of Joy Behar’s excellent interview hour, which only started a couple of months ago on Current. As a TWC subscriber, I’m appalled at how, over the years, the more TWC expands its channels (while cancelling many that I happen to like), the less I watch TV. Cable TV has indeed turned out to be a very mixed blessing.
I will really really miss Joy Behar and her funny and also serious interviews. It was entertainment with an edge. I wish a major network would pick her up.
I’ve haven’t been watching Current TV and now I really have no reason to.
I became fan of Al Jazeera english news when Egyptian uprising happen last year I developed a craze
I too watch on KCET Los Angeles here in SO CAL I rather watch that Al Jazeera english news than stupid Current TV
With this transpiring now, maybe, just maybe, they can get rid of the crap that is airing on that network now and make it somewhat relevant once again. This network is a joke like OWN that barely registers a blip on the radar screen, but maybe this is what this network truly needed. Gore was a horrible owner of this venture.
You can watch it on various PBS stations. I couldn’t believe it. They actually report news in a fair and balanced way! A real, professional news organization.
So they won’t be appreciated by the typical American audience.
Terrorist network? No thanks.
That cable providers (and viewers) have a problem with Al Jazeera, yet none with the various shades of Fox “News” is telling.
From what I have seen of Al Jazeera (I am not a heavy watcher, though I have viewed them online before) is that they are actually pretty even-handed when it comes to reporting the news.
I guess bigotry, blatant manipulation, and propaganda disguising itself as news is OK as long as it’s a “domestic” network doing it.
Interesting. Al Jazeera please consider keeping and building on Spitzer and the Young Turks. I’ll be watching.
Yes it will be great to hear the “other voices” of people whose religion commands them to “wipe all infidels off the face of the earth.” I’ve always been curious about their view points. I’m sure they’ll be happy to share their ideas with us while they are cutting the heads off of anyone who doesn’t agree with those ideas.
This is great news, the more news outlets the better. I just hope they will not have and on-screen logo and news crawl…
1. The content of Al Jazeera is dictated by the leader of Qatar where the programming originates. It is smooth in production and will be in English and have a Western friendly look but it is and always has been a propaganda arm of their leader.
2. Reading the NYT story there is an interesting buried lead – that Al Gore was eager to close the $500 million dollar deal before 12/31 in order to avoid the tax consequences of a 2013 closing.
But the King of Qatar is a very good friend of mighty Amerika <3
The anti-Islamic bigotry in some of these comments is just vile.
