Anna Faris has been tapped as the lead in Mom, CBS‘ comedy pilot from Chuck Lorre, the man behind the network’s comedy series Two And A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly. Mom, which Lorre co-wrote on spec with two members of his Two And A Half Men team — executive producer Eddie Gorodetsky and story editor Gemma Baker — centers on a newly sober single mom (Faris) who tries to pull her life together in Napa Valley. The project, produced by Warner Bros TV and studio-based Chuck Lorre Prods, was taken to CBS last month, landing a pilot order.
This marks a rare foray into TV for feature actress Faris, The House Bunny star who has been on the wish list of comedy pilot casting directors for several years. Her only previous series credits include a high-profile guest arc on the final season of NBC’s Friends as the birth mother of the twin babies adopted by Monica and Chandler, and another one on HBO’s Entourage where she played herself. Faris, repped by WME, Anonymous Content and attorney Robert Offer, also played the lead in Jhoni Marchinko’s 2005 NBC comedy pilot Blue Skies and has twice hosted NBC’s Saturday Night Live. On the feature side, her credits include the Scary Movie franchise, Lost In Translation and most recently, The Dictator and What’s Your Number?
Heading into the pilot pickup and production portion of the current development season, CBS already has locked in the leads of two of its highest-profile projects, Mom and the Beverly Hills Cop reboot, which has not been formally greenlighted yet but has Brandon T. Jackson attached to star.

If I had a comedy in development at CBS I would be getting pretty nervous right about now. With ‘Mom’ ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ & whatever they are calling ‘Ex-Men’ now those are 3 front runners for what will likely be 2 spots on the schedule.
I wouldn’t count Nerds in Love out. And this is just wishful thinking, but I really hope The Jim Gaffigan Show (or whatever they’re calling it), goes through.
Actually, this brings up a good question: will Beverly Hills Cop be a 1/2 hour comedy, or more of a 1 hour dramedy (very likely given it’s obvious procedural elements).
Chuck Lorre and company in a sweet spot at CBS.
Two and a Half Men hit a season high last night, so Warner Brothers sweating to sign the talent to another (final) season.
Which means they need a placeholder show from the production company in the event the negotiations go sour and they have to finish up this May.
Nice. I love Faris. She’s hilarious. I’ll certainly watch this, even if it’s from the creator of the awful Two & A Half Men.
Faris is not always funny, and she tries too hard. Anna needs great writing , and a solid director that will challenge her. Remember, comedic actresses , Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Rebel Wilson have stole her thunder-that is why Faris is go to television ( and her box-office bombs).
Prediction: CBS will pick up ‘Mom’ (which is in desperate need of a title change), place it after ’2 Broke Girls’, and send ‘Mike & Molly’ to 8:30 to get it ready to take over for ‘HIMYM’ the following year. If ‘Mom’ is a big hit, that too can take over for ‘HIMYM’ in 2014. Seems CBS is lining up a very female-centric Monday night schedule, which should work in their favor. Thursdays should remain intact, with a 7th season of TBBT and a final season for ‘Two and a Half Men’.
That’s a great lead and this girl is all comedy. Am actually looking forward to this now.
I watched a few minutes of Mike and Molly the other day until my 6-year-old said why are we watching this, it’s so stupid. True story. Mom is a great title and no doubt indicative of the wit, insight and innovation the show will display. Didn’t realize Anna needed the money so badly.
Just had a baby.
It’s somewhat funny that a Chuck Lorre pilot that ended up at CBS is referred to as a “spec”.
They did write it on spec, as a lot of high profile writers have been doing the past few years, so they could develop the concept without initial network and studio input, and then sell to the highest bidder.
Chuck Lorre, CBS and Warner Brothers, all making money.
Chuck PLEASE think about doing another “Roseanne” type show! That show is doing better in2 syndication than most new shows 2day! Also we need that kind of feel good, middle class / paycheck 2 paycheck, “original modern family” with a sassy mom type comedy. Not only because so many of us could relate 2 it 2day because that’s how we’re living but also to bring back the comfort of the 80s-90s generation where we didn’t really how good things were going for us & our family’s until we get to Y2K+ and understand the true meanings of inflation & bring broke! Please please please please please please please please consider it!! =) Thank you! -A True Fan
