So much for the hope that price cuts and favorable reviews would enable Barnes & Noble‘s NOOK tablets and e-readers to keep up with comparable products from Apple, Amazon, and Google. The No. 1 book retail chain says that NOOKs underperformed over the nine-week holiday season while revenues at the overall retail business fell 10.9% to $1.2B. “NOOK device sales got off to a good start over the Black Friday period, but then fell short of expectations for the balance of holiday,” CEO William Lynch says. “We are examining the root cause of the December shortfall in sales, and will adjust our strategies accordingly going forward.” The one saving grace of the numbers is that investors expected them to be worse. B&N shares are up 1.9% in early trading Thursday, after falling 3.9% yesterday. The company says that core sales — not including NOOK products — fell 3.1% over the nine-week holiday period at stores open at least a year. That was better than B&N expected, and means the results for the basic business should be down by low- to mid-single digits for the fiscal year that ends in April. The holiday season decline rises to 8.2% when you factor in the fact that B&N has fewer stores, and had lower online sales. As for the NOOK, revenues at the business unit — which includes digital content and accessories — fell 12.6% to $311M. The highly regarded devices suffered from “lower unit volume and average selling prices,” although sales of digital content rose 13.1%, B&N says. All told, the NOOK operation likely will end the current fiscal year with $3B in revenues and cash flow losses “at a comparable level to fiscal year 2012.”

Finally, Cannes Dealing! Radius-TWC Nabs Director’s Fortnight Film ‘Murder Party’ http://t.co/GiGVYqthLtAbout 12 hours ago

I’m surprised.
Noting that this is no REAL gauge of anything, the B&N I dealt with (-and did the majority of my shopping at) was always packed and had GREAT deals!
Thought for sure B&N would do gangbusters this year.
(Man, retail must really be in the pits this year…)
This is only one data point, but I tried ordering online from B&N this December when they had a big DVD sale. They cancelled the order a week later as out of stock, so no sale for them. Everything I ordered from Amazon.com, on the other hand, came in on time or earlier. Guess who gets my next order.
I have a Nook tablet and I really like it, but I do wish they would offer video downloads like Amazon has with the Fire. I have to get video content elsewhere and import it since there is no easy way to get it from B&N (so there’s more lost potential sales).
Got a Nook HD+ it has video. Maybe just the newer ones have it.
They only sell downloads for the HD models, which is money left on the table given the earlier Nook Tablets are video capable.
I had a horrible experience with Barnes and Noble this Holiday season, involving a bad battery in a Nook. Horrible customer service, poor troubleshooting and follow through, part shipped to the wrong address and an entire replacement unit being shipped by mistake. I feel they deserve to go out of business. I have never had such a poor experience dealing with a retailer.
that sucks. we had an amazon kindle fire (1st gen) that ended up with a bad charger 6 months in… we talked to amazon on the website chat and they sent out a new one that week. then when we were expecting it to ship amazon said that there was a backlog and it would take too long to get us another kindle fire 1st gen… so they upgraded us to the new kindle fire and we had it in 2 days. hope your experience gets better.
I’ve had a Kindle DX and now a Kindle Fire. I had the chance to use my aunt’s Nook over Christmas. There really is no comparison. The Kindle is simply a better product.
Oddly enough, when using the various app-versions of the different e-readers, the one I like the most is the Kobo, though the physical device is as flimsy as a dimestore calculator.
Kindle = VHS
Nook = Beta
Here we go: “This” is better than “That”. I had this experience with this company……….blah blah blah….
It has to do with preference. I tried all current gen tablets and e-readers before I made up my mind. I chose the one I liked, not what a review told me to like. This is why I TRY before I buy……
As far as customer service goes, ALL companies have morons working for them and they all have good people working for them.
This company, especially their online store, is completely disorganized and very high-priced and grant it, they might have stock available but they seriously need to reduce their prices if they ever expect to get anywhere and this is what doomed Borders.
You know if those coupons B&N sends me were redeemable on Nook books, I might actually buy a Nook book.
You know what would be great? If BN didnt charge for its “loyalty” card. Rediculous that itisnt free, a la the onrs from the grocery store. Complete turnoff that they still charge 25+ for it.
