BBC America has acquired the eight-part ensemble British drama series Broadchurch starring David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Vicky McClure and Arthur Darvill. In the vein of The Killing, Broadchurch explores what happens to a small community when it suddenly becomes the focus of a major murder investigation and is subjected to the full glare of the media spotlight. Broadchurch will premiere as part of BBC America’s drama block, Dramaville, later this year, following the series UK premiere in the spring on ITV.

From Life On Mars and Law & Order: UK producer Kudos Film and Television, Broadchurch was created by Camelot exec producer Chris Chibnall. “It’s a story of scale and intimacy, as the lives of the characters are laid bare,” he said. The series’ first and last two episodes were directed by James Strong, whose credits include Downton Abbey. Law & Order: UK’s Richard Stokes is producing. The Hour’s Jane Featherstone is exec producing with Chibnall. The acquisition brings former Doctor Who star Tennant back to BBC America where the British sci-fi drama has been among the network’s highest-rated series.

Fabulous! I was hoping the US would buy this. BBC America has become my “go to” network for great British drama (along with PBS of course). I’m glad more of these shows are reaching our shores these days.
This is awesome news
Love the Doctor!
But would they have picked this up if it DIDN’T star a former “Doctor Who”?
Honestly, there are dozens and dozens of great British shows (BBC and ITV) that never see the light of day in the states, but BBC America will rerun STAR TREK:THE NEXT GENERATION,X-FILES and SYFY’S BATTLESTAR GALACTICA to Death??!
Let’s go beyond Dramas – Comedies and what about the Popular British soaps?
You’d think with Miranda Hart being one of the stars of CALL THE MIDWIFE, BBC America would pick up her sitcom – now on it’s 3rd Season, or “Series” as they say.
I’m a huge fan of “Miranda” & I’d LOVE for BBC America to show it here. It’d be fun to see if American audiences “get” her humor, because it seems to me to be very British. I have to ask Brit friends for translations/background for some of the specifics but it’s worth it because it’s such a good show.
Well, It’s a money issue since it’s a cable network still in its infancy in the US. By law, public funding that goes to BBC cannot leave the UK. That includes the US. BBC America is funded by advertising dollars and since it’s a cable network that is available to most in upper tier cable packages, the same advertising companies that fund the networks and basic cable are rarely advertising there. With Doctor Who being so popular on the network, I’ve definately noticed an increase in big name companies over the years, but not enough to purchase the type of programming that truly matches what viewers in the UK have. ST and BSG are cheap because they’re in syndication and they have a built-in audience so it will bring some revenue to the network rather than them just playing infomercials during prime time.
I spent several years of my childhood in West Bay and was born
a few miles away I was christened in St. Johns Church in West Bay.
This is such a beautifulplace- whenever I visit it the beauty of
the area literally takes my breath away, I am so profoundly
grateful to Chris Chibnall for showing this area to the world.
