CBS has given the long-rumored pilot order to Beverly Hills Cop. The network also has ordered to pilot drama Backstrom, from Bones creator/executive producer Hart Hanson, and comedy Friends With Better Lives, from writer Dana Klein and producer Aaron Kaplan.
Beverly Hills Cop, which had a pilot production commitment and had already cast Brandon T. Jackson as the lead, is a continuation of the movie franchise centered around Axel Foley’s police officer son, played by Jackson, who takes down the criminal elements of the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. The films’ star Eddie Murphy is set to appear in the pilot and will executive produce with Shawn Ryan, who wrote the script, as well as Ryan’s producing partner Marney Hochman.
Backstrom, based on the Backstrom books by renowned Swedish criminologist and novelist Leif G.W. Persson, also had a pilot production commitment. Persson’s book series centers on Evert Backstrom. Sometimes described as a detective version of Dr. Gregory House, he is an overweight, offensive, irascible detective as he tries and fails to change his self-destructive behavior. Hanson wrote the script and executive produces the project with Persson and his Scandinavian literary agent Niclas Salomonsson. 20th TV, where Hanson is based, is producing. With Bones just renewed for another season, Hanson will juggle both the veteran Fox dramedy and Backstrom, if it goes to series. Backstrom is popular in Scandinavia, where Persson’s books have sold more than 6 million copies. The character has appeared in two novels so far, Linda and He Who Kills The Dragon.
Klein’s multi-camera comedy Friends With Better Lives revolves around a group of 30-something friends who each think the other has it better. The project reunites the team behind another multi-camera comedy project that got a pilot order last season, NBC’s Daddy’s Girls — that pilot’s writer/exec producer Klein, executive producer Aaron Kaplan and studio 20th Century Fox TV. This marks Kaplan’s second pilot order this season, along with NBC comedy The Gates. He also has the Cullen Bros.’ comedy nearing a pickup at ABC.

As much as I want to see Beverly hill cop series….. Come on CBS you guys can’t come up with and fresh new shows other that police procedurals and multi can comedies….
CBS full drama lineup is
Police procedurals:
1. Blue bloods
2. CSI
3. CSI NY
4. Criminal minds
5. Mentalist
6. Hawaii five o
7. NCIS
8. NCIS LA
9. Person of interest
10. Unforgettable
11. Elementary
12. Golden boy
13. Vegas
Law Dramas:
Good wife

Other dramas:
………………
………………
NONE
………………
………………
Come on now CBS, even though I really like some of those its time for something different as I won’t watch any more of you police procedurals unless it blows my mind away in the first episode….
At least put some effort and make a cop show with sci if elements….
I would like to see from CBS next season something new like
Action series (non police procedural)
Sci fi
Mystery
Ad more serialized dramaz
Is Backstrom considered a Jake And The Fatman reboot? Can’t wait!
Don’t like what CBS has on? There are 4 other Broadcast networks and several Cable networks to watch!
bottom line, procedurals work for CBS. and they draw viewers. besides, serialized dramas do NOT repeat well. notice how, outside of “Law & Order” and “Special Victims Unit” from NBC, reruns of CBS procedurals are prominent on ION, TNT and USA?
and those reruns actually draw ADDITIONAL viewers to the originals — “NCIS” continues to generate more than 20 million viewers, unheard of in this media landscape for a tenth year series.
Mike perhaps you’d could check out Under The Dome. It doesn’t sound like a typical CBS show.
“The series is set in Chester’s Mill, a small New England town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from and if and when it will go away.”
Jonah, I thought the same thing about Backstrom except without Jake, which would probably make it Cannon.
Should CBS bring back jerico for a third time? Police shows work. Shows with an overarching storyline with case of the week thrown in so people get closure. If Breaking Bad was on CBS, Hank would solve a crime each week as a B- plot.
Shawn Ryan is behind BHC ? Enough Said. I’m in!
Of Mike’s list I agree except to eliminate his items 1, 3, 8, 10, and 12 which would allow room for sorely needed romantic drama. Not everything need be murder and mayhem. Elementary has yet to explore the attractiveness of its lead actors and verges on romance drama.
Really looking for to Beverly Hills Cop. Don’t screw this up guys.
Please tell me Judge Reinhold is going to be in the Beverly Hills Cop re-boot. Its only right! You HAVE to tie some of the old cast into the new series and Judge RULES!
Here’s a little added information from a native Swede addressed to the anglo-saxon readers: The fictional character ‘Bäckström’ (please note the dots above the letters ‘a’ and ‘o’ in the name) is a very odd detective. He is overweight, self-confident and non-political correct but nevertheless a skilled and experienced investigator. In my eyes Bäckström is by far the most interesting character created by the author Leif GW Persson (and I have been reading his books for well over 30 years by now). In fact, I envy you since you’ll soon be able to watch this special detective on film over there!
You’ve ignored the fact many pilots at CBS aren’t in yet.
I am a huge fan of Leif GW Persson, he is very popular in Sweden, and look forward to the pilot of Backstrom.
