Related: Bill Clinton Introduces ‘Lincoln’ At Golden Globes: Video
UPDATED: Lincoln director Steven Spielberg was the one who ultimately arranged for Bill Clinton to appear tonight at the Golden Globes. Sources tell Deadline that the former President’s introduction tonight of Spielberg’s film about Abraham Lincoln was an almost state secret. “We had this on lockdown,” said DreamWorks co-chair/CEO Stacey Snider, one of the people who helped organize the appearance for the DreamWorks-Fox-Disney film. Only about a handful of people at the Globes knew the 42nd President was coming. In fact, to keep things under wraps, Hollywood Foreign Press Association members who did know about the surprise were told to lie – and say that the special presenter was Prince Albert of Monaco. Some of the HFPA hierarchy heard there would be a special guest in the first hour but didn’t know who it was. Certainly Golden Globes attendees dropping off their cars before the ceremony noticed that security was tighter than usual with assault rifles visible on authorities.

Clinton received the first standing ovation of the night when he came onstage. Snider told Deadline that “her heart was pounding” during his intro of a clip. Clinton called Lincoln a “brilliant film” in his remarks, and he also joked about some of the harsh realities of politics that Lincoln reveals in the Civil War era President’s desire to see slavery outlawed. “Winning it required the President to make a lot of unsavory deals that had nothing to do with the big issue — I wouldn’t know anything about that,” he said to big laughs.
Lincoln has had its fair share of real-life contemporary political connections already. The film played at the White House for a special screening November 15 and for the U.S. Senate on December 19. Though up for several big nominations tonight at the Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director – Drama, Lincoln’s only win was Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama.

JFK would have been an republican if he ran now. Whats your point?
JFK would have been an republican if he ran now
Put.
The.
Crack.
Pipe.
DOWN.
All that pomp and circumstance to lose to Argo.
lol
Justify all of your claims here, especially the switching of ideologies and the accusation of racism.
“with men with assault rifles visible in the background”
Were these guns really necessary? How many bullets does it take to defend an ex-president?
Yeah, but see they neeeeeeeed assault rifles. You know, because Clinton’s life is waaaaay more important than yours. Or mine. Or Monica’s.
All former Presidents have a full Secret Service detail. Clinton, Bush, etc. There’s nothing partisan about it.
No one is interested in shooting you, as you have not contributed anything to anyone besides yourself. Therefore, you have not risked pissing people off.
We frown on assault rifles in liberal Hollywood we want them outlawed. They are dangerous and they serve no purpose. The Secret Service should not be allowed to carry them. They should be forced to protect Presidents and ex-Presidents with pistols only. No machine guns and no semi-automatic rifles.
EXCEPT when these Evil Assault Rifles are in the hands of our Anti-Gun Stars that appear Our Big Budget Action films, gleefully WASTING Everything in sight.
You poor Pod. You haven’t a clue about Democrats’ racist history. Read about it before you embarrass yourself again.
so….Lincoln would’ve been of the party of those who filibustered the Civil Rights Act in 1964? The party of Al Gore, Sr., and Robert “KKK” Byrd? You keep on believing it’s the Republicans that are the racists.
Really so Robert Byrd (D) Sen. from WVA who served in Congress for 58 years as Head of the Senate Finance and Appropriations committee’s, Senate Majority Leader, Senate Majority Whip and former KKK Grand Kleagle, one of the most powerful men to ever walk the streets of Washington DC he came after Lincoln when this party of Democrats was so racially tolerant and didn’t use taxpayers money to buy votes? Please tell me more about your time travel machine.
It really makes you wonder about Spielberg’s ability to discern character. But old perv Bill has a “D” following his name so everything is a-okay with Stevie.
It couldn’t possibly be that the democrat party changed? Nope. Somehow the two parties pulled a Freaky Friday, republicans became democrats, democrats became republicans. Odd that only one Segregationist switched parties after the civil rights act. Former klansmen Robert Bird seemed to still feel at home with the democrats among others. It wasn’t until the old segregationists died out that the Republican Party began winning the South. But please, don’t let your ignorance stand in the way of your posting. By the way, I’ve heard of klansmen running for public office in the last five years, one in Indiana. They ran as democrats. I won’t be so crass as to say that mist mean all democrats still embrace their racist and very violent history. Own your history and quit assigning the past sins of a political party to the Political party who stood against them.
It’s great to see that the impeached, former president still gets his due from the Hollywood 1%-ers. They must have been relieved to discover that he wasn’t hitting them up again for contributions to his campaign, or Hillary’s, or his library. That’s probably why they applauded so loudly. They’ve each dropped a pretty penny on the The Grifter Pair.
This not-at-all-historical film is just another Speilberg attempt to rewrite history in his kosher image. After “The Last Days” I can’t believe he’s even taken seriously.
Who would expect anything less of Mr. Spielberg, who is a director, and of Mr. Clinton, who is an actor: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”
So an ex-President let himself be used at an awards ceremony to promote a movie. How classy.
This comment is perfect~~~!!!!!!!
And to think, he used to only USE whores.
Is that a fact? Lincoln did NOT believe in taxing the rich to pay for social programs for the poor. In fact he was adamantly against taking the “sweat of another man’s labor to accrue to the benefit of another”. So please explain how you support such a ridiculous claim. On second thought, don’t bother. You obviously don’t know history.
Spielberg’s hunger for an Oscar is pathetic. He has to trot out a former President? No dignity. No class.
Democrat. Republican. IRRELEVANT.
Both have racist histories.
The only difference is that one group “came to certain realizations” before the other. And only because it was somehow politically advantageous to them to do so.
It was wonderful to see him there. I’ve really come to like Bill Clinton. Still glad Argo won though, so happy for Ben Affleck.
Faux: Since you want to talk about “fooling people” and “switching ideologies” (foolish talk if I ever heard any) perhaps you can answer this question!
WHY did the Democrats stop the blacks from voting in the South for 100 years (until those rascally Republicans passed the Voting Rights Act in the mid-1960s?
Since ALL officials in the South were Democrats (mayors, county commissioners, sheriffs, state representatives and state senators, governors, and US Congressmen and US Senators) WHY did they not “vote” to allow blacks to vote? WHY did they insist on POLL TAXES and LITERACY TESTS that stopped blacks from voting? WHY did the Democrats in the South REFUSE to allow blacks to vote until the Republicans (in Congress) forced them to allow blacks to vote???
Can’t bear to think he was the first Republican president, can you.
Spielberg, Geffen, Weinstein, and the Left Wing ELITES of Hollywood know who their candidates are. Surprised they didn’t invite Monica Lewinsky to appear next to BILL BALONEY and his lust for self-importance.
Glad you like Lincoln and Reagan but they were Republicans. Quit trying to change history.
You are oh so wrong and clueless – Lincoln and Republicans freed the slaves – Democrats were supporters of slavery. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
It is polarizing to have collectivist democrat Bill Clinton introduce a film about individualist republican Abe Lincoln. Some say it was meant to belittle the Gop. The two parties (democrats , republicans) have Not changed much over the last 220 years. Munich director ,S Spielberg, was a campaign director for Clinton and this President and seems to have an agenda .
I thought “Payback” was a Mel Gibson movie.
So now you can change history to be whatever you wish? PITIFUL. The Democrats have enslaved Blacks by making them dependent on Goverment and destroying their culture
You guys all need a life. Your stupid bickering does not affect policy, change minds; just a waste of time.
