What a difference a year makes. Between 2009 and 2012, daytime soaps went from 8 to 4, and by the end of 2012, Prospect Park’s effort to revive two of the departed, All My Children and One Life To Live, had hit a dead end. Then within
the last month, NBC renewed its daytime drama, Days Of Our Lives, and Prospect Park got its plan for AMC and OLTL online series back on track. Now I hear that CBS is poised to renew The Bold And The Beautiful, and ABC has no plans to cancel General Hospital (the series is on a perpetual production track and doesn’t need formal renewals if the network wants to keep it on the air). CBS’ Young & The Restless, the highest-rated daytime drama, is two years into a three-year pickup, and casting and pre-production on AMC and OLTL is in full swing. That means that we will likely have more daytime dramas on next fall than we have this season — the first such year-to-year gain in 15 years, since NBC added Passions in 1998.

Daytime soaps’ improving fortunes is not a coincidence. After years of ratings erosion, numbers for the daytime dramas have stabilized, and they’ve even posted year-to-year gains this season. Bold And The Beautiful and General Hospital have made their networks’ decisions to keep them easy with impressive ratings increases. B&B averages 3.44 million total viewers (+6%), 1.6/9 in women 25-54 (+14%) and 1.1/7 in women 18-49 (+10%). Airing in an earlier slot to make room for Katie Couric’s new syndicated talk show, GH, which will mark its 50th anniversary April 1, averages 3 million viewers (+16%), a 1.6/9 in women 25-54 (no change) and 1.2/7 in women 18-49 (+9%).
Y&Rand Days Of Our Lives are down slightly: 4.74 million (-3%), 2.1/13 (no change) and 1.4/9 (-7%) for Y&R; and 2.64 million (no change), 1.3/7 (-7%) and 1.0/6 (-9%) for Days.

so I guess ABC was wrong after all about we didn’t want soaps anymore….we showed them didn’t we….were getting AMC and OLTL back (online) and GH is sticking around because of increasing ratings….chew on that ABC…
Business wise, ABC actually did the right thing by cancelling AMC and OLTL. The Prospect Park thing is only a win situation for ABC. ABC will continue to make money off of AMC and OLTL without even having to air them or producing them. And ABC can now invest its time and ressources on GH instead of having to worry about three soap operas.
I haven’t watched ABC since they canned AMC. I boycott them as they don’t listen to what the people really want. I hate reality TV shows too. I think it is time they all start listening… Who knows maybe they will go out of business and someone else will buy them out and bring back the soaps to regular tv.
The ratings are still awful, and the shows are expensive to produce. Enjoy them now, because it’s only a matter of time before they’re gone.
And The Chew and The Talk are far more profitable than the garbage granny soaps they replaced.
The ratings for the soap are better or equal to many primetime shows. Have you looked at the ratings for NBC’s Thursday night line up or the CW’s Monday nights? And, what about the disastrous ratings for repeats?
Finally, nice bit of sexism and ageism there with your “granny soaps” comment.
Eat a lemon today, Miffy?
I for one am sick of cooking shows and people talking about nothing. I have always enjoyed a good story and that’s what General Hospital is.
I too am sick of those stupid cooking shows give me back my soaps!!
please you must be really young or just never home……… those soaps ar far more entertaining then those you perfer….
you must be really stupid, talk shows and cooking shows cannot replace the iconic soaps, so suck on that Miffy or is that Muffy
Who the hell watches The Chew? Lol
soap opera’s will ALWAYS have a loyal fan base because these so called “granny shows” have been a back-drop to many peoples childhood, yes my granny watches a “story”, and my mom watches, my auntie, my cousins, myself, and even my nieces keep up with that same soap and always will.
It seems like the ratings increase might be because the others being gone.
I’m glad that soap operas are making a “comeback” but it’s been my view that they never were a dying breed. They never were a phase.
Though I’m thrilled with the prospect of new soaps being developed, I still cringe at the fact that ABC canceled OLTL & AMC. I’m glad OLTL & AMC are coming back, I expect that they will hopefully make it to cable TV as well. But they never should have been canceled. I was hoping ABC would bring them back and admit their mistake (I’d actually watch ABC again if they did), but it looks like ABC will never admit their mistake.
This is such great news! I am so happy for all the soaps and hopefully they will all be around many years to come
It’s about time that soaps are being recognized for the great entertainment that they are. AMC and OLTL should never have been canceled and I’m hoping that ABC recognizes that they made a big mistake.
You’re wrong. ABC did not made any mistake. On the contrary, ABC actually did the right thing by cancelling AMC and OLTL. ABC will be making money from AMC and OLTL without even investing in them.
ABC gets the best of both worlds with this Prospect Park deal.
David,
You’re the one who’s wrong here-Just because ABC stands to make stands to make serious bank if the reboots succeed doesn’t mean they haven’t made a mistake. Just what are the ratings for The Chew anyway? Where is The Revolution? Even people that carry an anti-soap agenda such as yourself can’t be blind to the facts
Troy, I believe David is saying ABC will now make money WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY ANYTHING. In other words, it’ll all be profit for ABC.
David,
You’re partially correct. While ABC does stand to make money from the online reboot of OLTL and AMC, I still think they regret the decision. Prospect Park has cut the production costs of these two shows in half simply be restructuring the format, shooting schedule, set construction, actor/crew salaries etc. Had ABC kept these two shows, and just done with them what Prospect Park is doing, the profit margin for ABC would be a lot more than the royalties from PP.
And cue the negative soap comments from Miffy in 3…2…
I’ll continue to make negative comments about them, because they are dumbed-down garbage. Evil twins, characters who rise from the dead, rapes turned into romances, amnesia, switched paternity results. All poorly acted by underwear models plus a few veterans who were never good enough to make it anywhere else (Susan Lucci, this means you). They’re awful. Fortunately, generation Y has no interest in them, so they’ll all be gone in a few years.
Sure Miffy, the same Gen Y that just finished watching Gossip Girl and is STILL watching Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game?
Yes, Miffy, and all those fake reality series are very intelligent. Like The Bachelor (you do know much of it is fake, right?) And all of those talent context feature very little real talent. Chew is very intelligent too. It’s not like you get very high intellectual content anywhere.
Sure, the soap opera stories are often silly. So what? It’s an escape, and it’s no less silly than all of the other programs they have on tv. And for the record, I watch some serious cultured stuff too, I like real operas for example and ballet and classical music, something you probably know very little about. But I also watch soap operas and I am not ashamed to admit it. Oh, and I am also a highly paid professional.
The acting in the soaps are very good too, and many an actor from the soap went on to the movies. They also provide training/employment for a lot of people. Writing for soaps whether you like it or not requires talent and creativity – I sure cannot do it, can you? Reality tv shows require little if any of it.
I’ve watched almost every soap out there for more yrs than I care to admit but they’ve definitely gone downhill over the years. Soaps are no worse than “Real Housewives” which I wouldn’t watch for a million bucks but after 4 and 5 decades, it’s just the same unbelievable stories recycled over and again. I used to tape 3 or 4 soaps on VCR and found myself falling asleep during them. Eventually, I found well written shows like “Alias”, “Lost” and “Prison Break” with excellent writing and acting and was never able to really regain interest in soaps. I realized there is a time to ‘graduate’ and move on. Now, I enjoy “Scandal”, another show with excellent writing and acting and “Revenge”. I guess these are nightime ‘soaps’ but they move much faster and employ much better actors. Gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em.
You forgot all the intellectional Vampire dramas. Gag. Yes oh yes gen Y you are a brilliant bunch oh lemmings.
I will still be surprised if any are still on the air 10 years from now.
I hope the soaps are still around in 10 years. Soaps are a wonderful pastime. I was so disappointed when ABC cancelled OLTL and AMC.
Not sure Id consider the revamped AMC OLTL daytime soaps as they will be online and I dont know if theyre going to be the same if only a handful of the original actors have signed up.It sounds like a new show with an old name. Are all the old characters going to be in a plane crash or swept up by Martians? The thing with these daytime soaps is theyve been on for decades every single day; its very hard for a new viewer to pick up the story line – thus, its no surprise that ratings keep deteriorating.
Jess, I disagree with you about the cast. The core characters of OLTL are coming online. I have watched for over 40 years and am pleased with the ones they are getting online! As far as a new person not being able to get into it, they do show our characters from years past to let people know what has happened in the past! Now if PP will treat the actors with the respect that they have had for all of these years, maybe it will continue for many years to come!
I really hope that ABC puts GH on Hulu too! I cancelled cable and watching online is a pain! I can watch everything else I like on Hulu so it’d be great to have GH too! And I know I’d watch it more! Watching online I tend to miss eps because I don’t wamt to sit in front of my computer when I’ve been doing that all day at work!
Regarding GH on Hulu: That is the only way I can really watch GH with my schedule is by having it on my Hulu queue. They show the last 5 episodes and also have interviews, behind the scenes, etc.
You can watch GH on hulu. I do all the time
If only they can do the same for As the World Turns and The Guiding Light.
IF these reboots are successful, this jars the door open for other favorites to return. That’s why ALL soap fans need to be behind the AMC/OLTL reboots.
We won!!! Our shows return and gh is on fire with the return of fan favorites!!!!! Oltl to return soon finally
For Lisa. I think you can see GH at Hulu. The blog site wubs.net has Hulu links of recent episodes. This is Hulu not Hulu plus. Also you can watch recent episodes at abc.com
i also think they should do the same for atwt and gl. and please get them back on tv! i think soapnet. bravo or own would be good channels to look into for the future!
Another World should be resurrected now ! The cancellation of AW was the worst thing to happen to daytime!
I agree that Guiding Light should be brought back also. With the right exec producer and head writer the show could return to it’s glory days. So many of the vets would return also!
I’m so glad that P.P. got their sh-t together & are coming back with my most favorite soap OLTL back on, I’m thrilled, the only problem that I have is with my favorite network, CBS, it has GOT TO COME to some kind of agreement with Steve Burton about returning to G.H. for it’s fiftyth anniversary show, he has been such an intergral part of G.H. for so long, what a dissapointment for the fans who lvoe him & Jason to not be there, CBS could & should let him do this thing!
I agree ABC made a sound financial decision by canceling both shows and negotiating with PP to bring them online. I will watch AMC on the web. I never watch “live” shows – I DVR or watch online since my TV watch time is limited. My favorite soaps are still on and will watch AMC when it returns.
Several of us love our stories so if we have to keep fighting to keep them, we succeeded before we can succeed again.
Cannot wait for the return of AMC and OLTL. With the announcement that they could be viewed on hulu, hulu+ and Itunes in the spring is great. Seeing half hour episodes won’t be bad (ABC could have done this and kept them on air)…but at least a revival of these shows coming soon. I really dont like watching shows on a computer but with my streaming video player from ROKU I can watch these shows on my tv…
The Soaps are not now nor have they ever been just for Granny.
Great to see soaps coming back but I have a question. It reads as if they will be online. Not TV. As a deaf person I have to ask. Will the producers of these shows consider viewers like me and use CC. When people talk about watching reruns online do you realize the use of CC is almost non existent very frustrating.
Miffy you sound like a bitter and rejected wanna~be thespian, poor dear. Give the day timers their due, and maybe think about beauty school.
So glad to see back OLTL, Vicki and the rest of my Llanview family. I’ll definitely be watching on Hulu.
Don’t care about AMC. It can stay dead for all I care.
Without lying I have been watching GH since I was 1 (one)..I will be 51 next month. My mother watched it while carrying me….we used to run off the bus to watch Luke and Laura. I have taped it (VCR) and watched it when my shifts changed due to work schedule. And after all these years I continue to watch… simply put…I can not find a show between the hours of 8:00PM and 11:00PM worth watching…and if by chance there is that one evening when there is “something decent on” television…within 3 weeks it will be a re-run. As far as reality shows go…OMG…you have got to be kidding me…is this what the networks have to offer. The soaps NEVER have a re-run…GH focuses on issues that is going on right now. Monica with breast cancer, Alan with pain pill addiction, etc. And please…as far as AMC and OLTO being replaced…by the CHEW…please people….just what we need…another show to tell us what to wear and how to cook…seriously?
Everyone can have “opinion” about good/bad of ABC cancelling AMC & OLTL but it has been proven customer & viewer wise they messed up big time (nielsen ratings are crap as we all know) & the spew/revoltion & anything else they replace them with is/will be crap. They should put them back & make viewers happy again. If they did this they would have more support on their night lineup as most of us put ABC on our back burner w/any of their programs after what they did w/AMC&OLTL. GH is filmed @PP so why not run these back @ their old timeslots? Even @half hours they are better than any one hour program they’ve been replaced with!
Why don’t you cut and paste your post and send it to ABC. I’m sure they’ll listen to your suggestion after your namecalling of The Chew. NOT
You guys just don’t get. As long as you keep using words such as “Spew” or “Revoltion”, ABC will never take you seriously.
By the way tvandmoviejunkie, your post is not a fact. It’s an opinion just like the rest of the posts here.
tvandmoviejunkie
AMC and OLTL are never returning on ABC. So stop acting like a crying baby in need of its pacifier and be happy that AMC and OLTL will get to live on in a new platform.
I just wish that we Canadians could gain access to the soaps on line.
All Canadians are blocked from viewing the American stations on line.
Not fair as we are also regular Soap fans for years and years. I personally have been a soap fan since they were on the radio and sponsered by the Soap manufacturers. Oxydol and Sunlight Soap. Procter and Gamble
Joann, you’ll be able to watch them on iTunes. You’ll have to pay for them, but you can watch them in Canada. Hulu is not available, but iTunes is.
