UPDATE PM: Sources close to the producers of X Factor confirm that Britney Spears indeed is out as a judge after one season. “The producers and Simon (Cowell) were having discussions over the holiday period about the year ahead. Britney had never been part of their plans for this year but realistically that was never going to come as a surprise to her either,” a source said. I hear Cowell and his team “have a pretty clear idea of the panel they would like for next season and discussions with one possible new judge have been going on for some time now.” The prospective new addition is expected to meet with Fox and the show’s producers in the next couple of weeks.
PREVIOUS AM: Let the annual circus program known as X Factor Judge Shakeup begin! The months of speculation that Britney Spears won’t be back as a judge on The X Factor next season reached fever pitch overnight, following a TMZ report out of Spears’ camp that she is “quitting” the Fox singing competition. The network and X Factor creator/executive producer/star Simon Cowell are not commenting, but it appears that Spears’ team has decided to get ahead of the story and position her exit from the show as “entirely her doing” so she can “focus on her music”. Sound familiar? Nicole Scherzinger, who was sacked as an X Factor judge last January, had her handlers feed E! a story that her firing from X Factor was her decision and her wanting “to focus back on her music career.”
For Spears, the move has very good timing — she just got praised by Fox chairman Kevin Reilly at TCA, offering some credibility to a story of a Spears departure on her own accord. “I think Britney did a really good job,” Reilly said on Tuesday when asked about rumors that Spears may be out. ” She came on, people remain fascinated with her and always will be. She’s just an interesting figure who’s lived a unique life, and I thought she brought some of that.” Asked whether the network would “be on board for bringing her back,” he said “Yeah.” Spears had a one-year contract, worth close to $15 million, so she won’t be dropped but rather not asked to come back. She didn’t bring a ratings boost to the show, whose numbers were down double-digits from last fall, in part because of a crowded field that featured the first fall edition of NBC’s The Voice. With Spears all but gone and L.A. Reid already announcing his departure, Demi Lovato is the only X Factor judge from Season 2 still in the running to continue alongside Cowell next fall. In addition to providing some sense of continuity, Lovato’s staying chances were boosted by a People Choice Award last night for best celebrity judge.

ABANDON ship U.S. X Factor is sinking fast. HEY Simon you made one big mistake firing Cheryl from the show, she was great on the show. the American people wanted something different, NOT the same old stuff from American Idol. CHERYL IS AWESOME !!!
Who is Cheryl Cole??
Ditto, Yolanda, ditto.
The last thing that America needs is another Brit on her airwaves. Is there a commensurate number of Americans on British TV? The answer is NO.
The answer is YES….most TV shows are American shows. Time you were subjected to people from other countries.
Cheryl who? Do her UK fans understand that she is nobody outside UK? And nobody cares about her? She had her chance in big city. She blew it. They fired her. End of story.
Like do you really, I mean REALLY believe that millions of americans would be like: “Who is this pretty UK princess that talks funny that we see in the promos? We should definitely tune in”…
For me Demi Lovato was the star of last season… good critiques, bags of personality, funny, sharp. I’d be disappointed to see her go
These talent shows are dying, and X Factor never got off the ground in the US.
The show needs to be put out of its misery entirely.
Well it’s a ridiculous childish saving face. Everybody knows that Britney was hired for one year. And they could extend it to another year. But Britney was not worth her 15 millions paycheck. She did not bring ratings, she was weak mentor and judge. So they didn’t invite her for next season and saved 15 millions. End of story.
Yeah, no buzz from this show at all. Pretty much D.O.A. but the death knell was that Rachel Crow girl getting kicked off. That put an awful taste in viewers mouths.
I agree. That was controversial and got everyone talking. That was the high point, and it hasn’t gotten better since.
HILARIOUS that Nicole left The X Factor USA to focus on her music career and she ended up being on The X Factor UK LOL…. she won last year with James Arthur and Jahmene as finalists, both of which she mentored. It would be surprising if she didn’t come back this year.
Britney’s one year contract was tailored for her — from day 1 her camp made sure she could exit after one season. If she leaves it is on her own accord. If you know Brit at all you know that she’s not a 9-5er and would never commit to more than a season. In and out, right before a new record drops. She has a brilliant team. Think about it.
Well her new album is coming out in 2013 and she’s going on tour again. The money from that will be far more than 15 million.
If she was or wasn’t asked back is besides the point. She was really hired to be wig wearing crazy Britney and that never happened.
At least she’s leaving to promote something that will undoubtedly sell. Unlike Christina who left The Voice for next season to promote a flop album no one wants.
This has been the prediction since she started. The producers must’ve been woefully disappointed with her lack of engagement with the show/contestants/speaking but to then see those woes reflected in a ratings decline had to hurt given the $15 million price tag.
The issue however wasn’t Britney. It’s the producers. With a BLANK SLATE they added nothing of value to the show. How do you go from an A Lister like Britney to a Z Lister like Khloe and a Not Even On A Lister like Demi Lovato? Demi’s career isn’t even middling and the fact that all of her acts did soooo poorly is further evidence she was a wrong choice. Even bringing LA Reid back wasn’t the best move because he’s a snoozefest.
The lackluster Mario Lopez as a decent addition because we know he can host. The rest was a trainwreck. Just watching Khloe staring at the floor when she walked to make sure she hit her mark was embarrassing and the voice that lacked inflection, intonation, etc. was painfully awkward.
Get rid of Khloe and Demi. Let’s hope the 3rd time is the charm with getting a judging panel.
Looks like Cheryl Cole being fired last year was actually a stroke of luck for her!
And Britney’s team didn’t do anything special. One year contracts are pretty standard. Paula and Nicole had them as did J-Lo and Steven Tyler and pretty much all of the current Idol judges.
The producers made that call for this precise reason so they wouldn’t pay out another 15 million with declining ratings.
Britney always seemed stoned on The X Factor- very robotic and constantly saying ” amazing.” The poor girl has no personality and Spears was struggling on the show. It was embarrassing because she was butt of so many jokes. It was better for her to leave.
CHER CHER CHER CHER
AND why did you let Ricky Martin go to Australia??
PINK
And in addition to new judges, time for new host
And just over all changes….. XF US had been a total disaster compared to UK. Plus most of season 2 changes made the show even worse
It’s not a good sign for the judges seats to turnover every single year….the audience needs stability, they need to know the same people will be there….that’s why DWTS has endured and AI until they started making changes was high in the ratings….XFAmerica is a big fail…..but Simon keeps getting those checks!
All I can say, is if they play this, WHO WILL JUDGE game like they did last summer, it will only further extend the audience disenchantment with the X-Factor. Find the judge, make the announcement and move on quickly.
One question: Why is it that the performances at the judges “homes” are always 10 times better then the 1st performance episode?
They really need to find that low key quality approach on the live shows.
They’re gonna replace Spears with someone cheaper.
It’s a start as they need to clean house on all fronts on this show and it starts off with these smug judges who have no clue how to evaluate talents. Next up, rid the hosts completely and go with a single host and make it more entertaining and engaging and enough of the venom being spewed by Cowell…the act is getting tiresome.
Beyonce for $20million.
Justin timberlake would be an awesome judge! He’s been in a group and solo, he’s also been in the business since his teens, and he’s funny! He’s so good at live performances and comedy! He’d be a perfect judge!
