Last summer, mega-producer Shonda Rhimes took to Twitter to criticize
Bunheads executive producer Amy
Sherman-Palladino for a perceived lack of diversity in the Bunheads cast. The ABC Family show is set in a small-town ballet studio. The first of 8 new episodes aired Monday.
The Rhimes tweet: “Hey@abcfbunheads: really? You couldn’t cast even ONE young dancer of color so I could feel good about my kids watching this show? Not ONE?”
After today’s TCA panel on Bunheads, the always-outspoken Sherman-Palladino said there are no planned cast changes or additions to the list of major characters on the show to add diversity in response to Rhimes’ criticisms (Rhimes later backtracked a little on her tweet, saying that she didn’t object to her kids watching shows with white actors and praising Bunheads for showing girls of diverse body types).
“No because everybody’s not white,” said Sherman-Palladino to question of cast additions. She said that, for dance class members, the show borrows from the Marat Daukayev School at the Dance Arts Academy in Hollywood, which includes a diverse group of dancers. “When I went to class, it could have been white sheets, Aryan nation. Ballet was a white, white world. This class is not like that.”
Sherman-Palladino said that diversity is important to Bunheads and should be a goal of TV in general, but she said such criticism is frustrating to her since she has tried — and failed — to launch projects with minority leads. She cited wanting to do a series with black actress Regina King, “who is untapped comedy gold,” but not being able to sell it.
“Look, the weird thing about diversity is, you’ll get these [network] notes
like, ‘this person is diverse,’ and I’m like: ‘Really, because they live next door to a Chinese restaurant? ‘ “ Sherman-Palladino said. “I know the networks are under a lot of pressure to do that, I think that’s a good thing. But being a writer who has gone in and tried to pitch shows for diverse actors and not being able to sell them, the pressure cannot just be on us to [cast] diverse actors, you have to develop those shows. Why is there no Cosby Show? “
Sherman-Palladino acknowledged that she is frustrated to be criticized after attempting to sell shows with minority leads but added with a shrug: “But what are you going to do, get into a pissing match on Twitter?”
On the panel, where she was joined by cast members including lead Sutton Foster, Sherman-Palladino also fielded a question that criticized the show for moving slowly, plot wise. The questioner said the show’s first 10 episodes contained a lot of “wasted time.”
Said Sherman-Palladino, who is also creator of Gilmore Girls: “Television has changed. I’m an old, tired broad. I do my thing. On Gilmore Girls we had very simple pacing, 3 acts and a teaser. [Bunheads] is 6 acts and a teaser. More plot is now pushed into shows. “ She said that, in comedy pitch meetings, network or studio executives always say they want the next Roseanne or Cheers but they really want a more accelerated pace.
“If you burn through all of your plot points in one episode, how do you get 5 years out of a show?” she said. “Longevity is important to someone with my Nieman’s bills.”

Courageous way to stand up to the diversity lobby. Contrast w/ spaghetti-noodle spine Lena Dunham, who decided to go full rollover with the black Republican romantic subplot. Way to cave to the ridiculousness!
Now, let’s look at Shonda Rimes quote: “really? You couldn’t cast even ONE young dancer of color so I could feel good about my kids watching this show?”
The implication that a black person can’t feel good about a show unless it has a one minority character is sickening. “feel good about my kids watching this show”. Unreal. No, Shonda, feel bad and don’t let them watch, you self-centered POS. “No, I won’t watch the Cosby show because the family doesn’t have a white kid.” LOL.
What a strange comment. Showrunners SHOULD be able to do whatever they want with their own stories but the little mini-rant you just wrote with underlying racism is uncalled for. Why is someone a “POS”? for stating their opinion just like you did?
Trying to compare casting minorities in a show and industry dominated by the majority with casting members of the majority in works targeting or dominated by minorities is silly. It’s not the same thing and it won’t ever be.
Look at the comparison in civic life–even though there’s a Black History Month, that’s not an excuse not to consider the contributions of African-Americans and other persons of colour the rest of the year around. Furthermore, there is no need for a “White History Month” in response.
Likewise, your criticism of Dunham makes no sense. She’s clearly got authorial control of the show. She has writing credit. She has directing credit. There’s no doubt that what appears on the screen is her intention. There’s no network meddling. The show has been a resounding success. If she chooses to respond to criticism either by adjusting her vision or by subverting the criticism, that’s her business. It’s especially premature to criticize her when the season hasn’t aired and no one knows whether or not the plotline involving Donald Glover will work out creatively or not.
Shonda’s tweet was melodramatic and also presumptuous, of course. This doesn’t surprise me, based on what I’ve heard about her personally. But she’s not racist. Actually, her shows have been pretty much the gold standing of casting diversity without engaging in tokenism. She is and should be a leader on this subject in the industry.
But I think there’s a lot of work to be done. Roles that could easily be colour-blind across the industry are not cast colour-blind. Diversity hires often suffer from tokenism. Behind the scenes, writers benches often don’t reflect the diversity being portrayed on the show. There are a dearth of black leads in programming not explicitly targeted to blacks.
The criticism that Bunheads’ first half-season moved a slow pace is more well taken–and Palladino’s dialogue passed the “too clever by half” mark a long time ago–but the show as a whole is quite well put together and I see good things for it in the future.
There are shows that have all black characters as well and no one has a problem with that. And yes it is the same thing as a show having all white characters.
Hey@nucklheadrimes: really? You are complaining about other people’s shows when your own shows are so stupid that they rot brain cells just by contact with the script pages?
Bunheads doesn’t suffer from a diversity problem as much as it does from an It’s-A-Tepid-Copy-of-Gilmore Girls-and It-Totally-Blows problem.
Amy is just amazing
Selling a show with a diverse lead is a lot different, and of course a lot more difficult, than casting a diverse dancer AFTER your show is already sold. Showrunners can colorblind cast supporting roles and find talented, diverse people. That’s what Shonda’s talking about. I don’t care who you are, it’s empowering to see yourself represented on TV, especially good TV. Maybe that’s what Shonda wants for her kids, I know that’s what I want for mine.
Guess Shonda Rimes missed the inter-racial relationship before tweeting.
I love Bunheads and don’t give a crap if a minority has a lead or not. If it’s good, it’s good- “affirmative action” is not going to make a difference.
I agree the plot is moving a little too slow but the characters do a lot of depth to them so the show should develop nicely.
What did you expect from the creator of Gilmore Girls, a show that introduced me to the wonders of projectile vomiting.
Amazing? Maybe an amazing racist. My kids stopped watching this show when there was no one they could relate to. Is it really that hard to write a series with some diversity?
Bunheads will get cancelled by the end of these last 10 episodes ordered. So trying to add some color to the cast at this point doesn’t make sense. But I do agree as a network ABCFAMILY does need to diversify and add a little more culture to ALL the series.
Bunheads is on the verge of cancellation anyway. Diversity is the least of this series problem. On a network like ABCFAMILY..which caters to young adults..they like there shows fast paced with teasers throughout the hour. Maybe Amy just isn’t in touch with the demo she’s writing for.
So, are we going to see people call Bunheads a “white show” now that the shows producers have declared it such? After all, Tyler Perry’s shows are called “black” even though he’s never called them such. So are we going to be consistent?
BUNHEADS is set in one of those sleepy coastal villages where almost everyone is white. It’s just being realistic (unlike, say, GANGSTER SQUAD, which asks us to believe there’d be a Black plain-clothes cop in L.A. in 1949).
In any event: Is not Julia Torres (Sasha) a Latina?
Off the top of my head, I can’t remember the race and ethnicity of each and every character on Bunheads. But there ARE non-white dancers in the ballet classes! Not in the main 4 girls, but they do exist.
Finding a character to relate to is not about the color of their skin. Isn’t that essentially reverse racism? People can only identify with someone who looks like them? Does the fact that many of the characters are dancers also make them unrelatable, since the majority of people in the US (or wherever this show is airing) are not dancers?
There are black dancers in the cast if anyone bothered to look past the main characters. As others have said it’s set in a small coastal town, so there is historically, not going to be a lot of diversity & honestly, does it really matter what colour the person is who says the lines, the outstanding comedy writing stands for itself. This is an awesome show, very funny & Sutton Foster is hilarious, among others. It’s a quirky show just like the Gilmore Girls & maybe you have to be a quirky kind of person to get it & maybe there are some unfortunate people out there who just have the misfortune not to be. Obviously those that think it ‘blows’ have no sense of humour to start with & obviously don’t understand the dry, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes droll wit this show puts out & those are the people we should feel sorry for who would perhaps be better suited to something with sight gags & canned laughter, where the humour is spoon fed to them, so they know when to laugh & so that they don’t need to think.
Also there is no such thing as ‘reverse racism’ there is just racism & you don’t have to be black or Latino or anything other than white to have experienced it, I’m white & I’ve experienced it.
This show isn’t about colour, it’s about great comedy writing, great actors & great dancers & that’s all that should matter.
ok. all those complaining about racism are slow on the pickup. black is not minority anymore -its become celebrity. To the point that our president is even black. I think that right now, race doesn’t make a person a minority- its all about looks. Think about how many celebs are from steriotyped minority groups…So the overweight, homely dancers on bunheads are more minority than a pretty black chick.
I love Bunheads and lost respect for Shonda. The black people I know who don’t mention color with every little thing are much happier than those who use any situation to cry racism and diversity. Amy is amazing and shouldn’t have a quota on who to hire. I feel sorry for Shonda’s kids being taught to only like and enjoy shows with people who look like them.
How do you know that they are happier? Have you actually asked them? Maybe they just haven’t shared their thoughts on the subject with you.
I like the show ! I’m not a dancer or young! Why do we have to relate to everything? I just want to be entertained.
I love bunheads!!! Just wish they had not killed Hubble
it’s refreshing to watch a show w/o violence and sex and cussing every 3 seconds. I look forward very week to seeing it!
bring bishop back she is the experienced delightful backbone of this show a master of sarcasmn and delivery. without her this show is just another teenage bimbo drama with no plot or adult entertainment. this show started of with an entertaining adult delivery and is diving fast without her
Is it me or do the main 4 girls all look like that lost weight since the first episode?
I have been thinking the same thing.
LOVE Bunheads!!!!!!!!! Loving all the ex Gilmore Girls actors popping up as well!!!! Hope it’s on a long long time!!!!!!
