Creative Artists Agency is seeking $1,040,522 from the estate of the late Tony Scott over commissions CAA says it is due. The agency wants the standard 10% cut from Scott’s work on the films Man On Fire, Unstoppable, The Taking Of Pelham 123, Deju Vu and his directing duties on the video game Criminal. ”This is a standard legal procedure. Tony had a wonderful relationship with CAA for 20 years and the estate will settle this as quickly as possible. This is nothing out of the ordinary,” a spokesperson for the estate told Deadline. It is a fairly common practice for creditors to file such legal claims against an estate if monies are owned. The 68-year old Scott died on August 19, 2012, jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles County that spans San Pedro and Terminal Island. The agency filed the Creditor’s Claim on January 28 in LA Superior Court (read it here).

Just like CAA to try and commission a client’s suicide.
Moronic comment.
Why would an agency, commissioned to perform services, NOT bill the estate of a deceased individual? Anyone who thinks this is wrong is an idiot.
Do they not have to pay their mortgage now too?
I mean fuck, the entire funeral home industry does exactly this and I don’t see you pathetic people picketing that.
It was a joke, idiat, but regardless, what service is CAA providing that they haven’t already commissioned? He only gets paid after they take their cut.
Or maybe they booked the bridge for him?
Compare this to the inheritance tax by the government and it seems extremely fair. After all, this money was owed but the gov. is actually taking, not earning. How much of my modestly successful fathers income will go to Uncle Sam and not his family but I will gladly pay off his mortgage until we sell the home.
Sorry, thought I was replying to article and not the post I put it under
Every Liberal idiot would say something like this because it’s a private business but when the government does it via estate tax they’re like yay tax them and spread the wealth!
Classy move CAA.
so let me get this straight, “Malaussene”– someone whose estate is worth, what, 100m? owes you 1m it doesn’t need and which should have been paid to you a long time ago. You just say, oh screw it, they should have 101m and I’ll just eat it? get real
Way to get ‘em while they’re down!!
Disgusting. Why didn’t they go after this money before he died. Sad enough as it is.
Because, you flippin’ moron, he didn’t tell them he was gonna kill himself. What a dope
Wow talk about kicking an artists when he is down…..where are they’re morals……jesus the man is dead and you want to charge for past works….let his family breath for a little bit…..
yeah, the bank, the gardner and the electrical company also waived their monthly bills. NOT
They have to try and close accounts…so it sucks he killed himself, but they still have a business to run.
Yes, go get that money from a dead man’s children.
That never stops the Government, dumbass. Grow up.
When you’ve got a top client, never let ‘em go.
I am speechless. I need names. Who? Who at CAA has spearheaded this?
Dead or alive, CAA wants it!
How disgusting. Let it go. He’s dead. I guess this means they don’t represent his brother Ridley. Simply vile.
CAA class. Since all payments are made through agencies and commisions deducted in advance, what exactly are you scumbags invoiicing for?
Like no other agency would do this. It’s called business, guys. That’s why we have trusts and plan estates, and the entire studio system is based on profiting from the work of dead people (it’s called
‘movie libraries’).
And this headline is as usual, overly inflammatory.
And it’s not just business, it’s Tony Scott’s – and now his estate’s – responsibility. The spokesman for the estate is saying that this is a “standard legal procedure” and that Scott had a “wonderful” relationship with CAA. This is what decent, responsible people do, they pay their obligations. The comments suggesting otherwise are beyond idiotic.
They deserve compensation for their client’s work prior to his tragic passing. Not sure I see how this could be considered classy or not classy… it’s business.
Not out of the ordinary. They’re owed the money. Remember all the creditors going after Michael Jackson’s estate after he died. Doesn’t matter how they died. It’s business. Especially when it’s $1M.
He owed the money. Plain and simple. I’m sure CAA wants it before the mob gets it, anyways….
Seriously… are the people commenting here all children?
It’s show BUSINESS, you morons. Would you expect American Express to forgive your unpaid bill after you die, or do you think your estate should have to pay it?
Oh please, people! CAA should get what their owed…period.
Some of the comments here are just absurd — no doubt sent here from The Drudge Report. The fact is Tony Scott will make money long after his death, and CAA will be owed a piece of it forever after. That’s how it works. Elvis is still making millions a year, and his representatives are due a certain percentage. If you need to file a claim against an estate to keep the business relationship going, than that’s what you do. It’s nothing out of the ordinary, but it does generate Internet clicks. And that’s what THIS business is all about, isn’t it?
Actually, Elvis is making more money now than he did when he was alive.
Agreed. I don’t see why this is even an issue; I’m sure if anyone commenting about how terrible CAA is did a lot of work for some individual under the expectation of being paid and that person died, they’d still expect to be compensated for their time and effort as per their signed agreement.
Sure it’s tragic when someone passes away but that’s not an excuse to bilk innocent third parties. People need food and shelter and their landlords and credit card companies aren’t going to take the excuse that “oh the person who I worked for died this month so they can’t pay me and therefore I should get this month free because of that.”
Obviously CAA would have preferred that Mister Scott not have died, but they did get him his work when he was alive, so they are entitled to their 10%. It has nothing to do with morals. It’s just business.
I heard CAA is going to take Tony’s dog?
Disgusting? Morals? Seriously? The estate itself will keep generating income for years. Royalties from intellectual properties Mr. Scott was involved in. Do you suggest cutting off those revenue streams too now that the director is gone? Tony Scott was a very prolific business. Monies were made, monies were owed and only if monies are paid can it be a healthy business in the future. For everyone.
Stop whining.
CAA should have announced they want to give the money to a charity for mental health. They badly misplayed this and they deserve the bad publicity for being idiots about how they went about getting this money. It would have been much smarter and more honorable to work with the Scott family and find some mental health group here in California who could use a million dollars. CAA doesn’t need it nor does the Scott family.
Here, here, well said and suggested on CAA coming out with face-saving, “good publicity” move of donating to charity! Come on, what’s a $1 million or even a few million $ in collections from a court judgment to mega-powerful CAA…it’s like chump change to these middlemen flesh peddlers!
Hey, my accountant just called to tell me, “There’s death, taxes…and CAA!” ;-D
Actually your accountant sounds like an idiot if he is suggesting that when you expire so do your debts.
Good point. And, it would have been nice to have waited until after Mr. Scott’s memorial service next month before making this announcement/filing this claim…
That’s so true. Those movies are so old. Interesting that they were never settled before now
The conciliatory quote is from the estate…clearly they are on board.
