CBS is on track to win last week in total viewers and adults 18-49 despite a big primetime football game on Fox on Saturday. CBS too got some help from football, with an NFL overrun on Sunday, but its big MVPs of the week were The Big Bang Theory
and NCIS, both of which crossed the 20 million total viewer mark in Live+Same Day. For Big Bang, the 20.0 million was a new total-viewer high (the comedy also hit an all-time high in 18-49, 6.7/19), while for veteran NCIS, the 21.1 million was a season high (NCIS‘ 18-49 average was a 3.5/10).
How big was Big Bang and NCIS‘ feat? The last time any network had two scripted series draw more than 20 million viewers in Live+SD during the same week was more than five years ago, the week of November 5, 2007, when CBS’ CSI delivered 21.9 million and Without A Trace followed with 21.6 million.
Both NCIS and Big Bang are hitting the high marks well into their runs — NCIS is in its 10th season, Big Bang in its sixth. Both series have seen ratings pick up after they launched in off-network syndication, particularly NCIS‘ run on USA Network and Big Bang‘s on TBS. (NCIS‘ current series high in total viewers, 22.9 million, was posted after the drama started airing repeats on USA — during the series’ eighth season). Both shows have been very successful on cable, with Big Bang continuing to sizzle on TBS where it launched in fall 2011. CBS’ entertainment president Nina Tassler recently crediting Big Bang‘s extra exposure for its recent surge as the comedy has hit a string of series highs this season, including in each of its two most recent airings. “The success it’s having in syndication cycles back and gives us, I think, that bump on broadcast,” she said at TCA last week. “It’s also a great show. I think that they’ve really evolved it.” Indeed, the larger cast of the show has jelled, and the comedy has delivered some instant classic episodes this season, like the one where Sheldon takes care of flu-stricken Amy or the one where Sheldon deals with HR sexual harassment complaints.
The burst in popularity for Big Bang does coincide with the show’s previous seasons becoming widely available, not only in syndication but also online. Series producer Warner Bros TV is well known for being very protective, not allowing online streaming of any of its comedies or procedural dramas until they launch in syndication. Big Bang is now finally available on CBS.com, immediately spiking to No. with more than 1.2 million streams season to date. It also started airing repeats on Monday in CBS’ traditional comedy block following the cancellation of Partners, which may have helped bring additional viewers to Thursday. Another potential factor for Big Bang‘s recent surge — its two most recent episodes, both of which posted series highs, were the first this season to air without NFL competition on cable that draws a similar young, male-skewing audience.

Person of interest is right after them and is growing.
Jonathan Nolan will make his debut as director on Person of Interest episode “Relevance” – February 21, 2013. This will be Sarah Shahi series debut too(her role sound like future POI spin-off). Best scripted and acted drama add and great names as directors. Hope JJ Abrams will direct at least one episode like Nolan. CBS can make one hour TBBT as lead in for this PoI major episode. They already do that on monday block with one hour 2BG. And CBS must advertise Nolan debut and episode “Relevance” like crazy on super bowl and grammys. From now i can say that will take Emmy and golden globe nomination. And if successful PoI spin-off will make fans and CBS happy.
Person of interest is upgrade version of NCIS/24! But no standart CBS cop show! Much more unique, creative and entertaining with a lot of humour!
We get it Petar. You like POI.
We know after reading your posts about it day after day after day.
Lighten up already. You wouldn’t want folks to think you’re a PR plant do you?
What CBS must do now to make POI even bigger hit and at least drama beast is heavy and properly advertising during super bowl and grammys. And before that of course. In that period we will have 4 POI episodes in a row – 31, 7(after super bowl week), 14(after Grammys week), 21(Jonathan Nolan debut as director and Sarah Shahi series debut). If they can build solid and even stronger fanbase will be great. POI was insane stable 2.9 all fall episodes. If they can make 3.5 new 2.9 will be perfect. Sarah Shahi role sound like future POI spin-off so CBS have a lot in stake here.(more money and one more drama hit) POI is hit and fresh much better chance for successful spin-off than one more ncis.“Relevance” deserve TBBT lead-in. Its major episode with Nolan and Shahi debuts. Not many Nolan level (oscar winners) on tv these days.
New Abrams/Wyman FOX cop show must be like Abrams/Nolan POI – with procedural structure and less arcs. POI is best scripted and acted drama on broadcast TV. If they can move some of the writers and Greg Plageman to help Wyman the same way they do with Nolan will be perfect. Only change can be younger cast and hot female lead for better 18-34 demo – its FOX, not CBS.
This is how television is supposed to work. Stick with a show, nurture it, watch it’s audience grow.
Can anyone elaborate what is the fascination viewers have with these two programs-NCIS in particular. To me,NCIS seems like the usual scripted crap CBS rolls out, yet, it gets such high numbers-HOW? Wake up people! Is everyone drinking the Cbs kool-aid? I suppose TBBT might be entertaining on some level (though it seems like your average by the numbers show i.e. nothing to warrant those type of numbers),but, the popularity of NCIS is truly baffling. I don’t get it. I don’t get it at all. It doesn’t compute & it doesn’t add up.
The secret to NCIS? It’s the cast. Compare it to CBS’ other procedurals, and it has the most likable cast of characters, and actors. I generally don’t watch the procedurals, but even I can see why NCIS stands out from the others.
Great writing. Great acting. great characters to care about..and an anything goes attitude that shakes things up from time to time.
As a person who has suffered through many watches of NCIS at my parents’ house (including the reruns they watch on USA…or is it TNT?), I can tell you the secret:
It’s the same reason 2 1/2 Men and TBBT are successful: More of the same. Every character has consistent quirks, and they use them every episode, ad nauseum. The show makes its older audience feel edgy and hip, even though the “crimes” are about as adrenaline-laced as a bowl of oatmeal.
My least favorite is the so-called “Goth/Hacker” character (Gabby, is it?).
She just spews incoherent techno-babble that drives people with any knowledge of computers or real goths insane. Has anyone ever known a sweet, perky, non-sarcastic goth? It’s beyond fiction.
The age group that watches this show is above 40, and the younger viewers are hostages in the Nielsen households that report to CBS.
As an over-30 male(who thankfully only visits home, and doesn’t live there), I am constantly amazed by the draw of this show. While the tone is different from the other procedurals, it’s only slightly different than the rest of the crappy crime shows that make up broadcast television.
How many shows do you know of that intrigue you to want to learn? And how many shows put so many facts out there that you may think “ok, no way that is true” and sure enough it is? That is a huge part of TBBTs success.
@SomethingisAmiss, thank you. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way.
