All eyes will be on the No. 2 cable company’s response to the channel that Al Jazeera plans to create from what’s left of Current TV: It could determine whether the Qatar-based news company’s surprising deal yesterday to buy Al Gore’s cable channel pays off. It certainly won’t if Al Jazeera America is just available in a little more than 40M homes — which is what Current has without Time Warner Cable‘s 12.1M subscribers. For now, TWC says that it’s “keeping an open mind” about Al Jazeera’s plans. That at least sounds more encouraging than TWC’s statement yesterday that its carriage agreement with Current “has been terminated” and it is “removing the service as quickly as possible” from its systems. The change of ownership was a bridge too far for TWC: It was already considering dropping Current due to its low ratings.

Al Jazeera presents other complications. TWC has a long-term so-called “hunting license” for the news operation’s English-language service — meaning that the cable company has an agreement that enables it to offer Al Jazeera English in some markets but not others. But the relationship has been cool. TWC execs didn’t appreciate the way Al Jazeera English two years ago forced its way on to the cable systems in New York: Al Jazeera subleased airtime for 23 hours a day on RISE, a digital subchannel for TV station WRNN that TWC picks up under the federal must-carry rules. Cable and satellite execs also soured on Al Jazeera when it began to live-stream its programming for free. Don’t be surprised if Al Jazeera changes course and launches a charm offensive to win operators’ hearts. Their carriage agreements provide a lot of leeway for them to drop Current if it becomes fundamentally different from the channel that they originally bought. That should be an easy case to make if a new owner changes the channel’s name and format.

Al Jazeera should be kept out of the U.S. Market. It is a mouth piece for Islamic militants and the Muslim Brotherhood. It is a one sided news agency that promotes the hatred of America.
At first I was like “Hey, now!” and then I was like “oh… I get it”
Genius.
Hey… if TWC can carry the garbage FOX News puts out every day there is nothing wrong with having a differing opinion on the air. This is America, the land of Free Speech. You don’t like what they have to say, don’t watch! What are you afraid of?
i regularly watch Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, Jennifer Granholm, and Eliot Spitzer. I support Israel”s right to exist. I regularly watch Al jazera on line and do not believe that it is in any connected. It was at one tome time part of BBC. I will be extremely upset if time Warner does not soon restore the programs on current worth watching. I find Fox news far more biased than Al jazera in its news coverage. Please ref\verse your decision.
Have you actually watched the channel? It is nothing like that.
Let me add that if Time Warner carries Al Jazeera they should be boycotted by all Americans.
Time-Warner Cable is easily the worst I’ve ever had–constant outages, audio drops, screen freezes, moray patterns, and just all-around crappy picture and sound….and their high-speed internet is even worse. I’ve stayed with them nonetheless, inertia probably, resisting the blandishments of the Dish folks who cram my mailbox with special offers, hourly it seems. But if T-W Cable picks up Al-Jazeera, I’m gone. Al-Jazeera is anti-American (just ask Dave Marash, their U.S. anchor who quit in a huff), virulently anti-Israel, and little more than a messenger service for Al Queda, whose communiques they slavishly broadcast, in precisely the way those terrorists intend. Sure, free country, T-W Cable can do business with these people, and viewers can choose to watch. People listened to Tokyo Rose, too. But listen up Time-Warner, add this sleazy channel and I doubt I’ll be alone in heading for the hills of Dish.
AJ was running a 60 second spot for a “highlights of 9/11″ DVD when I was watching it in Abu Dhabi. This was 5 years ago, but still…
The overseas version of Al-Jazeera is WAAAAAY different than anyone on this board thinks… one of the above posts about it being very anti-American is true. Especially the talk shows.
Due to the Saudi Royal Family visits to Los Angeles during the summer, The Four Seasons in Beverly Hills carries the Middle East version on it’s hotel cable system.

I will cancel cancel my service with Time Warner Cable, if they carry Al Jazeera and will boycott all sponsors.
If you cancel your subscription how will you know who is advertising?
Fox News will tell their viewers who to boycott, don’t worry about that.
This is the biggest gift Fox could hope for. The Jihad Network is a much better foil for them to foam at the mouth over than silly old MSNBC. I predict more Americans will watch al Jazeera second-hand, via Fox News rants and carefully edited video clips, than directly. After the election debacle, Fox really needs this shot in the arm.
Fox News needs a shot in the arm? They still dominate in the ratings, moron. Wake up!
Wonder what DirecTV will do. When they created their cheaper entertainment package, current got removed
Oh my, my what small minds we have. Why all the dust up on having another POV on the tube? Having ACTUALLY watched AJE, I can say it is on the level of BBC for world news. Where they lack a bit of perspective is covering their own territory, not unlike our friends at FOX. TWC is a poorly run and greedy enterprise, this move would add petty and cowardice.
It’s not “small-minded” to condemn enemy propoganda during wartime. You think we’re not at war? Go to a VA hospital and explain that to our returning wounded warriors and their families. You think Al jazeera isn’t enemy propoganda? Try watching it some time, especially the Mideast version. It’s vile stuff, and shame on any U.S. cable provider that carries it. Yes, let’s have a diversity of POVs on TV. But no, let’s not enable the propoganda megaphone of terrorists.
I agree with you!
Sadly, you’ve been duped.
Called DISH and urged them to drop the network– urge everyone to do the same. Al Gore sold us out yet again for his personal gain.
I’m a big fan of Al Gore’s, but was disappointed he would go in with Al Jazeera. The symbolism is terrible and it’s not like he needed the money (current net worth before deal is estimated @ $300 million). I’m all for a broad spectrum of content when it comes to news, but AJ has been vehemently anti-American in the past.
So, it’s ok to be fed trash from US – Zionist media, but not OK to see the other side? You are all cattle herded by the zionists of the world. Eat what they tell you to eat, believe what they tell you to believe. Any opinion outside of the zionist agenda is anti-American.
