The CW is piloting The Originals, a potential spinoff of the network’s flagship series The Vampire Diaries, in consideration for next season. The project, from Vampire Diaries co-creator/executive producer Julie Plec, will be introduced as an upcoming episode of Vampire Diaries that will air April 25, serving as a potential backdoor pilot. It stars popular Vampire Diaries cast member Joseph Morgan and the series’ recent addition Phoebe Tonkin. The Originals centers 
on the Original family of vampires, as Klaus (Morgan) returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans — a town he helped build centuries ago — and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel. Tonkin also stars, reprising her Vampire Diaries character as werewolf Hayley that was introduced this past fall. Plec will write the backdoor pilot episode and executive produce Originals with Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo for Alloy, Warner Bros TV and CBS TV Studios. A potential involvement of Vampire Diaries co-creator/exec producer Kevin Williamson, who is busy with his Fox drama series The Following, is unclear.
The CW has long been mulling spinning off hit Vampire Diaries, now in its fourth season. For Tonkin, this marks the second time she would be headlining a series for the network and WBTV following her starring role in The Secret Circle.

Honestly, if they did spin off The Originals, I’d probably quit watching TVD. The Originals are the best thing about TVD any day of the week. Hopefully The Originals would be well done. I’d watch it!

ratings wise, no. Supernatural’s around #3(which is great considering the show’s in it’s 8 season). TVD has been the #1 scripted show on the CW it’s entire run.
Joesph Morgan is incredibly charismatic and a talented actor that needs to be doing feature films.
He’s certainly in Immortals with Henry Cavill – at least that’s one film he’s in.
Really? So Klaus has pretty much been the primary antagonist for 2 seasons and not only will he not die for all the crap he’s done to the characters, he may be getting his own series where he’ll probably be the protagonist?
I don’t think I like that idea. I been waiting for this character to get his comeuppance since season 3. It seems like that probably won’t happen. Where’s the resolution? They’ve been fighting Klaus since the end of season 2. Is he just going to up and leave at the end of season 4 without any ultimate punishment?

I completely agree with you. I think both Joseph Morgan and Klaus are highly overrated so while I’m loath to see him and his character rewarded, it’ll be great to get them off Vampire Diaries.
Yet you probably have no problem with Damon, who’s killed quite a few people since the show started. I actually like this idea, VD has been getting a little too boring for me and haven’t been watching but I probably will check out this back door pilot.
I think Klaus has undergone a lot of punishment. I guess it’s all in perspective. I don’t think he needs to be killed to be punished. His own mother tried to kill him, multiple times. The man he considered his father tried to kill him, hunted him for centuries and turned some of his siblings against him. I think Klaus has been punished by having the thing he wants most (family) taken away from him.
Can’t freaking wait to be rid of Klaus – his incredibly desperate ‘PAY ATTENTION TO ME’ antics have been tired and grating for ages now. He needs to be gone, gone gone. The only thing that upsets me about this announcement is that he’ll probably be back for some sort of crossover episode.

Life to Klaus!!! Klaus is so sweet and adorable! He absolutely loves caroline and he deserves no punishment! Klaus is pretty much the only reason I watch VD I want Elena to die because she has been horrible to stefan and even though I am a Delena shipper, I am not oblivious to the fact that stefan loves elena and elena is just running off with his brother! Stefan and Damon are no better than Klaus and I don’t see mobs with stakes and vervain after them!
There is a reason why Klaus is still around after 800 years. Seriously doubt the present day is the only time he stirred sh*t up and pissed off everyone he knows. It makes sense that the fledgling vampire Salvatores wouldn’t be able to do the job, but they may be able to broker a deal to get him out of Mystic Falls. That is my guess.
Very cool that they will be filming this in New Orleans, which is such a great backdrop for a show and needs the film revenue.

I would definitely watch. I would love for Claire Holt (Rebekah) to have her own storylines! I hope that Katherine would make a few appearances as well, although it might be hard for Nina Dobrev to appear on two series at the same time.
Ugh. this will crash & burn like that show about witches. Klaus is not a fan favorite, and he’s sure no Ian Somerhalder. If they want to replicate what they have with TVD, they need to find another guy like that and good luck with that.

It’s like everyone who loves Klaus doesn’t get that some people like me didn’t nor will they ever like him. Accept it and move on. Meanwhile we’ll be celebrating if this spinoff meagerly succeeds enough for the actors to be too busy to come back and muddle up TVD like they’ve been doing since they entered it the first time.

SO true. And many critics even praised the Originals and their tvd storylines as some of the best, most powerful, intriguing, etc for the show. The Originals is one the very best aspects of the show and has long had SO MUCH more potential. They shouldn’t have killed off Finn, Sage, and Mikael so that there would be even more potential Originals storylines. But I guess there’s always flashbacks!
Phoebe was a big fan favorite for The Secret Circle. Klaus is for TVD as well as Elijah and Rebekah. Most darker protaganists or anti-heroes are far more interesting as series lead characters anyway.

wow people saying it won’t be good u guys are crazy! the originals are the only good thing the vampire diaries has going on for them…the show and its terrible writing are the ones burning to the ground, and yes many agree with me because their horrible ratings back what i am saying. julie needs to leave the vampire diaries show and concentrate on the originals, let some other writer save tvd, because she aint doing it…as for phoebe the werewolf i love her as an actress but please tell me she will not be the leading lady? makes no sense and i hope julie does not try to write an episode were it “makes sense” to us..Caroline should leave the sinking boat (VD) and should be the leading lady for the originals, her and klaus belong together..and i am excited to see Elijah again! I could not have said it better myself. Phoebe Tonkin is fine but Caroline needs to be with Klaus. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline (Candice Accola) could definitely carry a series with Plec leading the helm. Move up to leading lady status Accola! It’s your time to shine. However, no matter what, David Gilles must be involved. Even as just guest appearances. I would be so excited about this if only Accola was also involved.
I agree with you 100%. It would not make sense if Haley would be Klaus love interest (they have no mutual chemistry). Either introduce some new fresh face (like Klaus ex girlfriend or something) or bring Caroline to the spin-off show.

while I’m not myself a fan of either the Klaus character or Damon, I do agree with you – Joseph is no Ian in the way that Joseph is about a million miles ahead in acting land. that said I do also agree that this crappola won’t live to see the day past the ‘pilot’ (or at least I hope so).

I read an interview with her somewhere and she basically said Klaroline is never going to happen. It’s infuriating. It’s the same crap she pulled with Damon/Elena. Just a big tease to keep you watching. Klaroline have such good chemistry and if anyone can see past the bad parts of Klaus it would be Caroline.

Joseph Morgan is very talented and shines at whatever he does. I hope to see him use his talents in movies, I know TVD was his break out part, but he’s an excellent actor and I’d like to see more of him, no matter the role!
Actually his breakoutout part was the movie The Immortals. Great movie by the way, highly recommend it.

This is the best news I’ve heard in a while. Let’s be honest, the whole “love triangle” thing is super played out and nobody can deny that Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is a phenomenal actor. As much as I will miss the cast of TVD I think that the Originals have so much more to offer. And come on just look at Joseph. Unf.

I really do not like Haley character on TVD or Phoebe as an actress (not convincing enough for me). I was disappointed when I read that she will be included in this project. It has nothing to do with Accola or Klaroline.

I hope this means ALL of the originals… Not just Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah (the ‘main’ three) but Kol too! I’d suggest Finn, but even if set in the past, he was locked up in a coffin all of his life so it’s unlikely.

Joseph Morgan is AMAZING. To be honest I don’t care at all about Elena/Damon/Stefan. I’m interested in Caroline/Klaus/The origionals/Bonnie. I want to see Klaus and Caroline have a relationship grow on Vampire Diaries though. That’s the only problem I have with this spin off. If there is no Klaus/Caroline I’ll just stop watching VD and just watch this spin off instead. If it’s good that is.
I don’t understand why Phoebe Tonkin is going to be on the spin off though. I don’t find her likable at all. I think she’s a beautiful person.. but I disliked her on that stupid witch show and I’ve been looking forward to her character dying on Vampire Diaries. Maybe if she played a less bitchy character I’d like her. I don’t see that happening though. Her characters have no debth and are not interesting at all. The writers see a pretty girl and go with shallow bitch. What is great about Caroline / Klaus is that they have debth to them. They’re interesting and complex and have grown. I hate the “let’s stick a pretty girl in there somewhere” writing rather than going with interesting which is what is happening right now with Caroline/Klaus. They better have that play out!
Couldn’t agree more. Klaroline is the only problem I have with this spinoff too. If it kills them, then I prefer it not to happen. I’d be fine with Klaus sticking in Mystic Falls/TVD, he gives life and interest to the show, just like Klaroline, as everything you stated above.
