Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
PBS president Paula Kerger said today that the pubcaster has considered the idea of synching the U.S. broadcast schedule of its hit series Downton Abbey with the earlier British schedule on ITV, but so far it has not found that such a change would best suit the American viewers (she added that in Britain the show airs with commercials; in the U.S. it does not).
The idea, she told critics during a PBS session at TCA, has been to avoid pitting Downton against the glut of new fall programming on U.S. networks and cable channels. She compared the experience to watching the Olympics: “People knew the outcome but watched them every night,” she said.
A questioner pointed out that American viewers accept the Olympic broadcast schedule but find it “annoying.” “We’re not punishing our viewers,” Kerger responded with a laugh. “At the end of the day, I want to make sure we are putting the series in a place where the most people can find it.”

Asked for her take on Downton Abbey’s formula for success, Kerger cited casting — in particular the “brilliant” choice of Maggie Smith “Can you imagine Downton Abbey without Maggie Smith?” she asked rhetorically. (She noted that casting is also a key to the success of another PBS hit, Sherlock). Kerger was quizzed about how casting changes on Downton might affect its continuing popularity: It has been announced that Dan Stevens will not return for a fourth season. While teasing that she would not provide plot spoilers, she said: “Casting evolves. I think with any series that runs over a period of some years, characters come in and out, actors have opportunities to do other things.” She said that losing characters could be offset by adding characters, such as Shirley MacLaine joining Downton for Season 3.

I wish they would synchronize the schedules. The ending of this season has already been spoiled by any number of American TV sites. The world gets smaller and smaller.
I couldn’t wait for the us version, I downloaded the series every week as it aired in the uk.
“The idea, she told critics during a PBS session at TCA, has been to avoid pitting Downton against the glut of new fall programming on U.S. networks and cable channels. ”
Yes, because no one has DVRs now or anything.
Poor Ms. Kerger it must be so hard for her to keep up. I mean what with losing pages in her filofax, the mimeograph breaking down, and it that weren’t enough she ran out of tape for that dang Betamax. Wonder when PBS will drag this idiot into the 21st century. Then again it’s a moot point anyway, within 5 years PBS will close up shop because they haven’t figured out how to adapt to anyone who isn’t a babyboomer. Wonder how many potential viewers and donors have they lost because they refuse to adapt.
No one I know from the younger demo in the US is watching it on PBS. They’ve already downloaded and watched all the episodes ripped from ITV. I still don’t understand how the Christmas special will fit into the PBS schedule. Will US audiences be waiting the length of an entire pregnancy to see it?
It’s only 8-9 weeks of programming. Sync the schedules or be damned to Hell. The outer circle, of course…
They don’t run it at Christmas, they just run it as episode 9. It functions as the season finale.
To me, syncing the show would actually help the PBS ratings. Yes, there is a chance that airing them in the fall, during the broadcast networks premiere time could hurt them, but for an industry that prides itself on ratings, how many more viewers can you get by airing them as soon as they do in the UK? Delaying them is damaging, as far as I can see.
While this may be completely different, BBCA learned that if you get the Doctor Who episodes quickly -as on the same day it airs on the BBC- ratings increased because people were not downloading them off the internet.
Yes, the world is getting smaller, and even PBS has to figure out away to jump into the future.
Kerger making excuses – the real reason they want it in a less competive month is simply to gain increase membership to the local PBS stations.
Just be honest.
How sure are you claims?
Having worked with PBS, you cannot believe how old fashioned these people are. They want to milk DA to so that they connect it to their pledges. The delay is actually a disservice to U.S. viewers. And, yes, we all downloaded it the day after airing.
I wonder if PBS is aware how very many people torrent this show because the schedules aren’t synced? Add that fact to the existence of DVRs and her “heavy fall” argument makes no sense. (not to even mention they aren’t ad supported)
“At the end of the day I want to make sure that we are putting the series in a place where the most people can find it.”
Yes do that because PBS viewers are known to be of such low intelligence that they have trouble finding programs on their television unless helped by the government.
Also, I can’t believe that a person holding such a position of importance is still using the cliche “at the end of the day”.
They really need to sit down and have a talk with fans themselves and with BBC America to find out how wrong they are.
First world people problems… What a tragedy.
That problem is so funny to people from Europe, Australia, South America. Since they all have to wait years for american show to be shown in their countries. 60% of the shows are not shown at all. And nobody cares.
But it’s such a scandal and problem for american viewers the first time it happened to them
Welcome to real world. That’s why piracy became so popular around the world. People in other countries (just like americans with Abbey) want to watch famous TV shows the week they aired in US. And not 2 years after. That’s why they watch it online. The whole piracy is not about the movies these days. People just want to watch american TV shows that are airing for free on american TV anyway.
Allow those Hulu or something for viewers in other countries too. And piracy will go down. Those shows from NBC, CBS, Fox, CW, ABC are shown for free in USA anyway.
Rubbish.
i am 55 years old and this woman from pbs sounds like she is being quoted in 1985…”fall season” is so antiquated it’s almost precious…tv shows premier all year long now, not just the fall season..january and february are bringing audiences a slew of new programs and summer reruns have given way to many summer shows, especially on cable….for a president of a tv network to talk such drivel is grounds for immediate dismissal…
I have loved Dowton Abbey and waited anxiously for whole year to watch it again. Today, as I watched, I got fed up and shut it off. I refuse to watch it again! I have watched what I thought was to be a classy period piece.
Instead, now I’m, once again, unwillingly subjected to an agenda driven tv show, meant to, once again, elicit public sympathy for a specific group. I’m referring to the character of Thomas.
If PBS is going to show a period piece, then for goodness sakes, at least keep it realistic, as it would have been at that time, not modernized to exhibit sympathy from an unwiling audience!
I didn’t like the subject introduced but chose to ignore it at first because I love the show.
However, today’s episode was just too much. From the beginning, Thomas was a sneaky, mean troublemaker. The kind people love to hate. There was nothing nice about either Thomas or his co-trouble-maker, the maid.
But, now, all of a sudden, he turned into this symathetic, “lonely” character just because he’s gay?! (A term definitely not used back then.
If the subject is going to be included in the story line, then make it as it really would have been in the early 20th century. Especialy, when said character was trying to sexually assault another male! Women are not the only ones who are sexually assaulted you know.
Yet, suddenly, the writer(s), producers, try to make you feel sorry for him. Totally out of line for what would really have happened at that time. In reality, he would be lucky if he wasn’t strung up! Yet, PBS makes the character who wanted Thomas arrested out to be the bad guy!
This is supposed to be a period drama, for entertainment only, not for everyone to have to be subjected to another “lecture” – however way it’s done – on how everyone must accept a certain agenda!
I don’t watch tv for that. I watch it for entertainment and because I love History. Otherwise, I’ read a book. But, certainly not agenda driven shows! What a huge disappointment! I won’t even bother finishing watching it now.
I totally agree with this incite full post. Thomas made himself out to be the hero when he “found” the dog HE hid in the shed. He is always smoking! I, too, felt that the writers were trying to draw the viewers into their agenda. I am not homophobic; however,I feel that this lifestyle is wrong and should not be portrayed as it was and that Thomas was the sympathetic character.
yes, i agree; the agenda views from “these days” were imposed on that particular episode; STILL NOT ACCEPTABLE
Is there anywhere we can view the footage of the TCA Summer Tour 2012 Panel Discussion featuring the Downton cast?
I have to agree, I love Downton but the character Thomas should be treated as they would treat him at the time. I do not like the fact that now everyone is excepting him and feeling sorry for him. Please leave this storyline out or cast it the way it would be for the time era…
Please do not ruin a wonderful decent moral program with this…
I just discovered this wonderful seris. I was wondering if PBS plans to run seasons 1 and 2 again. If so when? I would really like to see them too. Thank You
I wouldn’t mind the British version. Their commercials would be fun to watch.
I thank PBS for descent programs, while I may not agree with all of the story line on Downton Abbey, its cleaner than our three major networks with their violence and blood.
i was going to say the same thing-lol
Please don’t screw up this series by changing it from PBS. It kills me when people fix things that aren’t broken. Let it stay right where it is without commercials. OKAY!!!!!!
The Era we are in the TV/movie world has everything to be desired in the way of DECENCY the content is mostly VIOLENCE,PERVERSIONS,SEX,yada, yada, yada…. enuf already!
My daughter told me about Downton Abbey, so I started watching it on demand. I watched season 1, season,2, the screen said also ” current season” I went to watch the current season and it is gone. When is it coming back on? I am so looking forward to watching season 3. Please don’t make me wit too long.
i am patiently waiting for the series to continue; love the clothes, conversations; such a welcome change from so much TV silliness
Wonderful series, congratulations to PBS, a decent program to watch. Sadly the death of Matthew, I did not like it. In USA we are waiting to se the serie 4. Please dont tell me we have to wait until 2014, I don’t know if many people would be alive to watch so wonderful program. I am sick and tired in the USA of violence, sex, drugs, blood. What I like it more is the era of the novel. This is an addiction, I don’t know how many times I had watched the series. Would you be kind to inform us in the USA if we have to wait until 2014 for 4 season? Please reply. Thank you. Mary Hope
