The third-season debut of Downton Abbey on PBS last night almost doubled the series’ second-season premiere. Sunday’s 9-11 PM broadcast of the aristocratic British soap pulled in 7.9 million viewers. Last year, 4.2 million tuned in for the Season 2 premiere on January 9, 2012. Last night’s Downton premiere made PBS the second-most-watched network in the time slot after CBS. Downton Abbey got a 5.1 household rating on Sunday night, according to Nielsen. Downton Abbey’s third season started out softer than expected in the UK but ended up being higher rated than the show’s first two seasons; the consolidated ratings for Season 3 averaged 11.9M viewers for a 40% share. UK broadcaster ITV ordered a fourth season of Downton Abbey in late November.

It IS a FANTASTIC show. I’m not surprised people are flocking to it.
This is good for PBS
That mean season 4 for DA RIGHT LOL!
I’ll say it again … how many of these viewers actually contribute to theit local PBS station – even if it’s a small amount ($5-$25)
It doesn’t matter what raitings are for PBS if it doesn’t turn into pledges.
PBS is so darn focused on getting big pledges – $35-$120 that people forget the local station would be glad to recieve small amounts.
It deserves a “proper network” showing…. only a few episodes a series bur “they” still daren’t take the risk
It’s amazing Revenge wasn’t more impacted.
It’s all melodramatic pish-posh with unbelievable soapy story lines and it’s friggin AWESOME!
Once again former PBS station, KCET, is slitting their wrists.
Don’t understand the appeal,mindless trash.
You’re not fully realizing the Downton Abbey Awesome unless you’re following Patton Oswalt on Sunday nights. His Downton tweets are hilarious.
DA has struck a pitch perfect chord with American audiences who are still catching onto and catching up w/ the series. The British do “Pagentry” like no other. FINALLY some decent, pleasant television to happily escape into for an hour, or so. DA may prove to be as popular as the SATC series in a PG kind-of way, as it is a show with basically nice characters who respect each other and are just trying to do better for themselves, their families,l friends and community. Bravo! p.s. I wish PBS would air the longer British ITV unedited/uncut version of the show in the US, and simultaneously!
